Title: Cant get IDE CF to work on A1200
Post by: videofx on June 11, 2014, 02:45:40 AM
I connect a 44 to 40 pin adapter to the 1200 motherboard and connect an IDE CF adapter and the 1200 boots but the mouse cursor wont move. The mouse buttons work but not the cursor.

I tried a different IDE to CF adapter and the 1200 wont boot.

Any ideas how to get hard drive working?

Thanks

How are you powering the CF adapter?
How big is the CF card, and how is it partitioned?

Need to power the adapter, usually using the floppy power. Probably need to make/buy a floppy power splitter.

Best way to setup the CF card is using a reader, your PC and WinUAE. Where it gets tricky is partition size and file systems.

Steve is the man for setting these up, he can do it for you for a fee or you can follow his guide :

Does the Amiga work fine without HD connected? I mean mouse etc etc.

All CF cards are not the same and some may not work as hard drives due how they present themselves (as removable or other crap) plus the A1200 IDE device is a bit primitive.  It is usually not the adapter (although you can get them with 44-pin connectors to power them this way).  Get hold of a friends known working card and try it.

yup, mouse and everything works perfect when I disconnect the CF/IDe adapter. And yes I have power connected to CF IDE adapter.

Is the 1200 fussy with CF adapters and cables?

Which workbench are you using and what is the kickstart revision in your 1200? Also, how did you prepare the CF drive?

WB is 3.1, KS is 3.0 and I took the CF to IDE adapter and card from my working Amiga 4000 which has WB 3.1 installed

Has to be something on HDD then. What about booting from workbench floppy, does mouse move then?

Yup, booting from WB 3.1 disk samething, mouse wont move. change to a different brand of CF/IDE (no CF cards installed) wont even boot.  So I am guessing my cables could be wrong or the CF/IDE adapter is not compatible.

Tried a 1.2GB IDE drive and same results

I am getting a BLizzard 1260 and will try scsi while I order parts from Amigakit

Thanks

I would agree, so using that adapter in your 4000, its fine?
As you have ruled out most things, definitely now points to maybe cable.
