Title: MUI 3.9 Released for AmigaOS 3.x (68k)
Post by: eliyahu on June 08, 2014, 02:23:59 AM
Terrific news from the AmigaOS MUI development team (http://muidev.de):

Quote
The MUI for  AmigaOS development team is proud to announce the immediate release of  version 3.9-2014R1 of the Magic User Interface for AmigaOS3/m68k. Please  find the release archive in our download section http://download.muidev.de/

This is the first release of MUI since  MUI 3.8. At least a 68020 CPU is required. A faster CPU and a graphic  board is highly recommended. Additionally MUI 3.9 will make use of 3rd  party system extensions like AfAOS.

Like all former releases a  keyfile is required to enable all available settings. Old keyfiles from  MUI 3.8 can be used without any restriction.

This release is  explicity declared as a beta release, because it been developed and  tested on an AmiKit installation running on WinUAE only.

Please  report any issues in the bugtracker along with a verbose description of  the problem as well as detailed instructions on how to reproduce the  issue.
This was announced on Friday, but it looks like no one around here noticed. Nonetheless it's nice to see MUI updates for both 68k and PPC Amigas are back with an active development team.

Certainly interesting.
I may have to dig out the A2000 again.
But how the heck are we supposed to get keyfiles?
Stefan Stuntz has been incognito for some time now.

Anyone successfully using it? I can't run MUI (1111 emulator guru) after updating on my 060 A1200.

probably best to contact jens or thore on your issue. they've asked everyone testing the release to open tickets at https://muidev.de/query as they encounter them. :)

Have you seen this page (http://www.sasg.com/cgi-sasg/order_info?app=mui)? My understanding is that the keyfile generator is missing/lost, but he'll send you a keyfile in his/someone else's name.

I can confirm this is true.

may i ask just few things (since im testing a lot of stuff already and i hesitate to add anything to the list):
1. why now after all these years an update for amiga? what does it functionally bring?
2. i must say i wasnt expecting it. i ve moved on seeing open source alternatives like aros zune a better solution to concentrate on, simply because the code remains preserved.

zune is or might be available for all systems, because of its open nature, so why not support this instead?

i d like to add that, i hold yam/mui classes coders in all due respect for the continuous work all the years, even though i have not taken so much practical advantage of it so far, just wanna know whats up now seeing the pond drying out for us all (except the hardcore 68k fans ) alas.

It crashes on my A1200 with OS 3.1.

This'll be great news when it's working.

As I understand it these new classes are original code not written by Stuntzi so my question is, why not merge those additions with Zune to benefit everyone?

There was no problem installing mui3.9 here. I choose update mui 3.8 and it deleted some obsolete files telling me they would cause problems and installation finished successfully. It's just that it gurus here when I try to launch something mui related.

It works on a clean 3.9 A1200 setup I have.
It bothers me with the annoying beta message very often :(

I think there is an env variable that might disable that (I saw it from SnoopDos). Something like "iknowitisbeta".

I'll try it on a clean OS install on a spare partion I have.

Great news !

All we need now are simple tutorials like an idiots guide as the official ones are too complicated or missing info eg setup guide.

Also tutorials that create complete programs.

Amos came with 100s tutorials thats why it is popular.

Can we create MUI GUI during runtime ? dynamic controls ?

Anyone ever get this working under 3.9?  Any major improvements?  I'm thinking "make a full system backup and then try installing it", lol.  ;)

I had the beta version installed in a rather wonky/broken setup I had previously.  Now that I have a working snapshot, I think I'm going to try updating to it again.  I'll make a valiant attempt tonight and see how it goes.

Do we know if it includes some more patterns, features?  I've tried looking for these, but haven't had much luck in finding the differences between 3.8 and 3.9.

Also, as others have said, a guide would be nice.  Seriously, MUI has a billion settings it seems, I also have noticed that it seems each application uses it's own settings, rather than the attempt at a global one I created.

I've been trying to find some other patterns to use for it as well, but without much luck.

slaapliedje

P.S. on a more technical note, which is better performance/memory wise, pngs or iffs?

*This* drove me crazy.  After poking around for a while a while back I did find an option for something like "reset settings to default".  Had to first set up the options I wanted in the main MUI Prefs program, then load each offending app and fix them.  I think I found it by right-clicking on the page headings, will try to scratch it up again and give better instructions if you can't find it.

Also a changelog between 3.8 & 3.9 would be nice!  :hammer:
