ok so I need to get one txt file onto a CD-Rom with OS3.9 with both Boing Bags installed. Can I use MakeCD? is there a way to initiliaze the CD & just write to it directly?
-
Found it easier to do that on a Windows machine. Windows 7/8 is great for burning CDs/DVDs, just drag drop what you need.
Just make sure to close the session so the Amiga can read it.

@ Lurch
good idea to intialize CD with Win7 system then hopefully I can just copy txt file directly to the CD in OS3.9..will try tomorrow.
actually, that won't work because the CD will still show up as uninitialised in OS3.9 as I need to be able to copy a file from Amiga to the CD not from CD to Amiga

This does not work. There is no packet-writing software for the Amiga.
You can only write a full CD or session with the existing software (MakeCD for example).

What I usually do is upload the txt file to my home FTP server or copy it to USB. Seems a waste to burn an entire disc just to transfer a tiny txt file.
You could even email it to yourself using YAM. :-)

Not if it's a rewritable disk :p

I used re-writable CD's to transfer files between my PC & Amiga for months, before investing in card readers for all my systems. Works fine, I'd dump files onto the CD's and read them back on my Amiga. 3.9 doesn't have the 8.3 filename limitations that some other Amiga CD-reading software has, but it would still bomb out occasionally if I had (for example) like a 100-character-long filename, lol. ;)
MakeCD is a horrible nightmare of a program that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, but it works. Wish someone would come out with better CD-writing software for Amiga's. ;)
Also, you say "both Boing Bags installed". You know there's 4 now, correct? The two unofficial ones add a lot of new features, def. recommend. :)

PS - when burning with Nero, I found I didn't need to finalize the disk. This helped with transferring files, I'd just write whatever, then add a few more files later, etc. I must've added files to disks as much as 20 times, until the disks were completely full, the Amiga's never had trouble reading them. Maybe I was just lucky. ;)

I use cdburnerxp and burn cd/dvd as ISO 9660/joliet which works fine with amiga os 3.9

How big is this text file? I'd be inclined to use an MDF 720k floppy?

Surprising, i find makecd works just fine and is relatively easy to use?
8+3 problems are nothing to do with amiga, thats ms/dos style limitations although ffs doesn't have really long filenames, they are still longer than 8+3 stuff-a good reason to always use pfs/sfs. no amiga cd software is stuck with 8+3.
There is also fryingpan(can do DVD also),masteriso, and burnit(never had luck with burnit).

Did you modify the installer as well?
By the way what happened to Frying Pan?

yup that's what I ended up doing. Mind you the MakeCD gui is not the most user friendly one though.

Can't find any installation archive or even binaries.

Since default settings in newer versions of nero no longer create discs that can be read with cdfs (discs show up as uninitialised) Ive instead been creating isos with masteriso and then burning them.
I have no doubt its possible using Nero still, but Im not familiar with what settings need to be.

Remember:
(CD-)ROM = Read Only Memory
You cannot write to read-only devices...
