Dear Friends:
I have an amiga 2000 (68000 unexpanded) with 1mb chip, 2mb ram, and 40 mb HDD.
I do not want to expand any hardware.
I would like to learn from you, what is the best software for the amiga 2000, both games
and applications/utilities.
What I already have is :
-shadow of the beast 1 and 3
-defender of the crown
-knights of the sky
-gunship
-wizardry:bane of the cosmic forge
-deluxe paint 4
-moviesetter
-disney:animation studio
-amospro
-octamed
-deluxe music construction set
-the director
-art department professional
-professional draw
Please help me pick the best software for amiga 2000.

Directory Opus 4.16 is an utility that must be on all amigas, regardless of its hardware version.
Cygnus Ed is the best util for editing batch files or plain text files.
Filemaster 2.2 is like Dopus, but incredible fast, even on a 68000.
Super Duper for cloning disks
I know that you have Octamed, but Protracker is the most tracking program ever used on Amiga by far.
I don't know if Personal Paint requirements will match you an install.
DMS utilities and RAD utilities(for saving floppys to HD, and mount them on memory for testing), but i don't know if they work on a 1.3 Kickstart.
If you don't plain any hard upgrade(i suggest only one: Bigger HD), this will be the programs i recommend to you.

I forgot to post, I do have directory opus, it runs super and I really love it.
I believe (off the top of my head) kickstart is 1.3 and workbench 2.

While you have stated that you are not upgrading the hardware, an A2620 or A2630 CPU card is an inexpensive upgrade you won't regret (a 14 or 25 MHz CPU with 2 to 4 MB of memory).

Personally I would throw 3.1 on there. A rom costs less than $20 from AmigaKit or ebay, and the software, well... you know. ;) Of course if you want to just play games you can stick with 1.3, but you listed a bunch of productivity software...

I gave away.
I kept this software for the future, when I will get another more powerful amiga.
What I really want now, is to know what is the best software (games and utils)

Well, you've really got 2 limitations, not just 1 (a 7 Mhz 68000). The Kickstart/Workbench is also a limitation. Many productivity and most OS improvements require at least OS2.1 and some require OS3.1. I haven't filtered a list for 68K AND OS1.3 in over 20 years.
I have seen your posts on here for years. I'm sure you have noticed the lists and compilations that have been written about here. Most require the latest OS and more horse power than you have allowed.
On the other hand, one of the few compilations for the 68000 is Gulliver's BetterWB, but to make best use of it you will need KS/WB 3.1.
So, off the cuff, here are a few titles that I remember for OS1.3 and 68K:
Games: Falcon, A10 Tank Killer, Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer, Silent Service 1 & 2
Productivity: Brilliance, Final Copy, Professional Calc, GVP's DSS8 for sound, Distant Suns (astronomy)
A RomSwitcher with 1.3 and 3.1 roms might give you a broader spectrum of software to choose from.

That's Kickstart 2.0 (which explains why you have Workbench 2 to go with it).
I'd still upgrade to 3.1 if I was you. A Kickstart update is the first thing I do to an Amiga when I buy it.
As for games, most games for the A500 should run, just don't expect to do much 3D rendering in Lightwave.
I know you don't want to spend money on hardware, but keep an eye on eBay for a cheap 68020/030 CPU card. They pop up from time to time and then your worries will be gone and you'll be able to run OS3.1 and WHDLoad.

It seems no one can resist suggesting hardware upgrades when you have clearly stated that you are NOT interested.....and it turns out that I'm no exception!!! :)
I don't know your reasons for avoiding upgrades, acceleration, 32-bit, etc, but, I can share the spec of my fav A2000. It is also purely 68000 and 16-bit. It does have a Supra Turbo28 accelerator that has a 7 MHz fall-back mode for complete compatibility with old games and OS1.3 thru OS3.1. When in 28 MHz mode, it is nearly 4 times faster than stock!!!

I've got a soft spot of the A2000 as it was my first Amiga. I still use one now, but it is heavily expanded.
One thing to check is to see if it is an OCS or ECS model. Try running SysInfo on it and see what it says.
Also, some models have a jumper on the motherboard that allows you to toggle it between PAL and NTSC (mine does, but I can't remember what revision it is). That can make a difference when playing certain games if you're lucky enough to have that version.

I run a stock Amiga 500 1.3 (with a hard drive though).
Here is some of the software I found works well:
Lazy Bench 1.02 (Kind of a start menu)
Hippo Player (Sid & Mod Player)
NComm (Terminal Program to "surf" the internet or BBS)
SuperBase (Small "Database" program)
Many compilers (HiSoft Basic, AMOS, LatticeC etc)
GO-64
Amiga Vision
Magicwb1.3 (Run Magic Workbench Icons in 1.3)
Also if since you have Kickstart 2, you can run my favorite app called Algo Music, random music generator that actually works.

Understandable, but you should consider replacing that hard drive. A 40mb HD is OLD and WILL fail, probably sooner rather than later, and then you'll loose everything on it, and you have to replace it anyway. Best to do it before it breaks.

Yah that actually happened to my Amiga 500 just after I got it, but the one I have in there now will probably die in a year or two. Unless you go for a CF solution its hard to guarantee anything.

Hmmm - I never understood why people think they have to use things like "DMS utilities and RAD utilities" to save their floppy disks on HD.
I never needed those tools - I always created a directory on the HD with the same name as the floppy disk, copied over all content from the floppy to this directory and that was it.
If required, I added an apropriate assign to this directory in the user-startup to be able to run the software in it properly.
No other tools involved aside from DOpus. Fully agreed - DOpus is a MUST on every Amiga. The same goes for TurboPrint ( http://www.zedonet.de/eshop-tpamiga.html# )...

I'd say that depends on what you want to do.
- If you want to use the Miggy for scientific work, I'd like to suggest tools like MathAmation and FunctionPlotter.
- If you want to do engineering work you should get hold of things like MaxonCAD or DynaCadd (both machine engineering, latter is real 3d and very slow on standard 68000 cpu, but works) and there also was a tool to convert 3d data to executable CNC programs (forgot the name), NewIO (makes circuit board layouts from schematics - electronic CAD) and LogicWorks, Cycas (architecture CAD).
- For morphing etc. there are Elastic Dreams/Fantastic Dreams.
- For raytracing there were programs like Reflections (later called MoonZoom), Imagine and the like.
- For 3d anim there was SculptAnimate 3d (there also was the legendary MaxonCinema 4d, but it possibly required more than standard 68k cpu).
- For processing images there were programs like Butcher or AdPro.
- For presentations there was ScalaMM 400.
- For composing music there was the legendary Sonix from Aegis, which includes a note editor.
- For office tasks I have FinalOffice 97, consisting of FinalWriter, FinalData (database) and FinalCalc. But maybe this bundle was only available here in Germany...
Those should be enough for the moment...
