Gotek amiga floppy emulator (for use in real Amigas)

Nice and clean work. This Gotek thingy is real savior. How do you cut the USB opening?
-
Nice work, very clean! Just need to Retr0brite those keys a little bit, lol. :D
-
Nice!
I built a split floppy power and floppy cable for mine. (OK, that's 2 separate cables)
I run power to both the floppy and the GOTEK.
I run the floppy cable to both, but I route wire 10 (DS0) to a DPST switch.
That way, I can run either the GOTEK or the internal floppy as DF0, if I ever want to use real disks..
Pretty messy tho still. I separated my floppy cable wires (was going to bundle them), but then realized that for my A1000, I can just slide a flat ribbon cable thru the expansion slot. So I should have left it flat. I don't want to cut the case on my A1000, so going to place my GOTEK external.
(Waiting for kickstart floppy support tho. Although with the switch, I can boot off of my kickstart floppy, then flip the switch for a disk image. )
Nicely done!!

AmigaKit should really pick up on this and offer pre-flashed GoTek floppy emulators already updated with the Amiga-compatible firmware. I could do the re-flashing myself, but if AmigaKit already sold GoTek's emulator re-flashed and tested, I would pay a few bucks to save myself the hassle.
-
You can buy them pre flashed on ebay (£40 vs £20), but there are legal issues with selling them this way
-
Can this be used within Workbench? And how many floppy drives can it emulate at one time?

wire 10 (DS0) to a DPST switch => good idea!!!!!!

Hervé Messinger don't want to see his firmware sold by any company (or any AMIGA user on Amibay!)

S0 = DF0 / S1 = DF1 => so, I suppose only 2 GOTEK

He drilled a few small holes and then expanded with the tool DREMEL.

Works slick too..
And like most good ideas I work on, it wasn't mine.. ;-) Came from someone at EAB. I was thinking of toggling the power when it was suggested that toggling DS0 would be better..
Also, apparently multiple drives thru 1 GOTEK is possible in firmware, but it will require some soldering (I'm assuming something about the DS0 and DS1 lines). HM isn't doing it yet.
But it is on the radar.

I've ordered my second unit! :)
A friend of mine reported to me that there is a little problem: the original floppy disk drive (DF1) with a Gotek (DF0) = you can't format a disk on DF1!
I must check!

How does this compare to Lotharek's offerings?

It doesn't really. ;-)
OK...
The HxC is MUCH nicer.
Much more polished. Easier to use. Easier to set up. More options. Better display. More compatible.
However, if all you are looking for a basic "reading standard ADFs off of a USB device" and you are OK with maybe a little bit of soldering (to add some header pins, not technically required, but a good idea) and flashing firmware via a USB to serial adapter, then these are really cheap and work.. ;-)
As much as I like the HxC, I don't mind floppies (I actually like them sometimes) and I just can't justify the expense of the HxC.
But this is pretty cheap and requires a bit or tweaking to get to work, which I enjoy.
Just got the Linux firmware flashing program working yesterday (as I burned down my XP laptop for MINT).
There are things it doesn't support (IPF, extanded ADF, compressed ADFs, kickstart images, etc) yet, but it's still a work in progress..

I'm thinking that if this device can only support one ADF file at a time, then the only use it would have for me is booting single floppy games.
Though on the other hand, if it could support multiple virtual floppy drives, or ADF files of 1.44Mb in size or larger, then I could create a custom boot disk to install Workbench with via the primary boot ADF and then a series of ADF files mounted in RAM.
That's my main beef with floppy drives, aside of the fact that they all die eventually (as do floppies), they are also slow, and become unreliable at reading disks at times. With a virtual disk, I could easily prepare a hard drive and install Workbenchw with next to no hassel. So in that regard, I'm thinking I'll be opting for the alternative personally, though I do admire the work done here in this project, it is very cool, just not practical for my needs.

Xdelusion
IIRC the guy who hacked the original firmware is working on a new firmware with multiple disk support. See thread on EAB
@ Thread
Is there anyone in USA that would be willing to flash one of these for me and sell it?

Awesome to hear, where's this thread?

Perfect, thanks!
Now that my interest is heightened a bit more, I'm thinking this is the USB stick I would prefer to go with as I'd hate to have something an inch or longer hanging out the side of my Amiga. :)

Dang, nice..
I'm cheap and I'm just using the old USB sticks I have around, which are small, but still plenty of size for a lot of PDFs..
But at that price, that is tempting..

This one cheaper though it only 4Gb...
...then again, who needs 8Gb for some ADF's? :)

Alright, I have ordered a drive, 8Gb micro USB drive, and a programmer. Might as well check this out. :)
-
I got mine in the mail today, and the USB Serial adapter had arrived earlier in the week along with my mini 8Gb USB stick.
I did not feel like waiting on my headers to arrive, so I did a quick and dirty soldering job using an old wire that I cut into bits and soldered directly to the connectors on the Gotek and the USB serial adapter. Aside of issues getting the drivers recognized (I used alternative drivers than those listed in guide) all went well and without a hitch. After removing the original firmware, I only had to unplug and replug the USB Serial device into the sytem once in order to get it to flash with the new firmware.
I've not gone about modding my case and I don't know if I will any time soon as I intended to buy this as a means to install Work Bench to a hard drive, without needing a working floppy drive, not to mention working floppies around to do so.
The upside is that I do not have to wait on a new firmware that supports multiple drives, as this is already capable of doing that and more in it's own way.
You can configure it to be able to cycle through 999 disk images currently, and you do not have to reset the Amiga to use each floppy image. I.E. you can boot off your WB 3.1 install floppy, begin your installation, then simply push a button on the Gotek to switch to the next floppy as needed and it will do your bidding (so long as it doesn't fail to read), and the Amiga will respond as if a new floppy had been put in drive DF0:.
If you want to use this, but boot off your hard drive, I imagine that you could install this as an external floppy drive in an old Amiga floppy drive caddy. On the other hand if you have this installed internally, you can create a blank ADF and boot off that and the Amiga will continue to boot off your HD as usual and you can acess all 999 of your disk images.
Honestly, this was a worth while investment. Once my headers come in, I will install them into the Gotek propper. As the firmware begins to mature to the point where it hopefully supports nearly every feature we want, and every floppy image out there, then I think I would not mind ordering a batch of these (should I get my new job), flashing them all and reselling them to people who are overwhelmed by the simple soldering and flashing process. Seriously, if I can do it, ANYONE can do it.

Cover all the expenses and I'd happily do it for ya, though I tell you it is EASY!
Besides when there are updates you'd then have to depend upon someone to keep it updated for you. That could get expensive shipping it back and forth like that.
I used solder, but from the looks of it, a little handy work with a mere paper clip would do the trick too!
Something to consider.
-
Same here..Someone wants to send me one, I'll flash it and send it back to them.
I'll even solder on some header pins.
But, especially at this stage, where it's still new and we're all waiting for newer and newer firmware, I'd recommend doing it yourself..

Got my Gotek drive and 4gb stubby USB stick. Just waiting on my USB RS232 to TTL 3v Cable to arrive.
:) Then Flash...arrhh arrgh.

I was not certain whether or not it has been said that the Gotek would work as an external floppy, so considering I had an old external floppy drive sitting around that would no longer read disks, I figured I might as well take the time to find out for my self.
And the results are...
...YES, it does in fact appear to work, though now I need to figure out a secure means to attach the Gotek to the inside of the casing as it does not sit as high as the old floppy did, and therefore the screws will not reach it. Though the solution should not be hard and I wouldn't think would require much thought, though in the mean time, any suggestions?
Also I will need to cut the facing a bit so that the drive sits in there as it should. Either that or remount the screen, buttons, and LED to the external floppy casing.
In the mean time, if anyone wants this old floppy, just pay the shipping and you can have it else it's going in the trash.

Oh, my sweet Lord! You put it in an A1010 case; dude, you could fit a whole computer in there. Why not pick up some cheap nonworking external drive off ichBay and use it, then use the A1010 case for an rPi conversion project?

Because this beast is too damn big and too damn heavy to let goto waste. ;)
Besides, other external drives don't have the snazy Amiga check mark on them.

I'm with ya!.

Got my USB RS232 TTL device on Friday and did the programming tonight. Posted an update here:

Now have an Amiga GOTEK running nicely thankyou very much. Time to buy another.
Happy to provide any tips for anyone thinking of doing it. I'm not a great solderer and had 2 pairs of reading glasses on when I was soldering on the jumper pins. Some people have just used wires but I was worried I'd screw something up.
It was a challenge finding the time but fun and certainly not hard to do.
Picture of GOTEK and Soldered pins attached.
Cheers
