Is there a replacement tool for Screenmode under OS 3.1 that will try a new selected mode for X seconds, like in windows, and will revert if no confirmation that it's working?

You can try MUIScreenMode, can't remember if it does that.
You don't really need it, though.... you should only have working screenmodes available. Use the Picasso96 or CGFX prefs programs to make sure your screens are all valid.

Well, I'm running an A3000 with an LCD hooked to the 31khz output, and if I drop monitor drivers in a ton of different resolutions show up but not all of them actually work so I was just looking for a quick way to test modes without having to reboot in between each :)
Thanks!

Ah, you mean ECS screenmodes?
In that case, just copy all the modes over from your Storage disk, or just run all the files (VGAOnly first if you want to try with that). Then run a program with a screenmode requester and an escape key to quit, and see which ones work :) Sorry I can't think of a program at the moment that'll do it but quite a few will, I think (MAME for instance). No need to reboot if you choose a program with a quit hotkey that you know!

Ha Ha, I was thinking for a moment "what do you mean, Screenmode Prefs has that built into it!" But I've been using 3.9, and it's been forever since I looked at 3.1. Would be nice to backport that feature.

Ah lol yes I haven't installed anything but 3.1 yet. Soon I'll get to 3.5 and 3.9...

Yes, Screenmode prefs in 3.5 and up has a test feature. To test modes on my older systems I actually use Overscan prefs - the Esc key works to get out of modes that don't work. It doesn't have quite the level of versatility as Screenmode prefs, but if the base mode works in Overscan prefs, most of the variants do as well.
Also take a look at MUI 3.8's PSI (Public Screen Inspector) tool... that might suffice, too.

You can also have a program which uses it's own screen open and switch to it using Amiga-m when a mode doesn't work. Now you can drag that program's screen down, and Workbench will use the same monitor driver as the program. You can then switch to another driver.
