After lusting over MorphOS for years... I'm finally getting a g4 mac to try it out. (hopefully this weekend)
A friend of mine has a g4 emac he's selling me for next to nothing.
What I want to do is FIRST before deciding to register it is test old games on it. For example, I want to test Super stardust aga and other AGA games and see how good the performance is. People have told me they can run any amiga games on morphos even with a 1.25ghz emac like I'll be getting and I just find that hard to believe. on a 2.0 ghz pentium pc aga games lag and work pretty crappy. Maybe powerpc is just that much better?
I want to try aga demos and all the old classic stuff too.
In short, I want to use morphos for my all things amiga box (new and old)
I don't want to see skipping frames, laggy sound or demos skipping scenes
because it can't keep up with an amiga 1200 from how many years ago...?
In short, i want ALL amiga software to work and work well, emulated or not.
I've been a big aros supporter for years but no really, I need a modern browser and other things aros just can't do. Besides this even on a 3ghz
aros box the performance of classic stuff is sometimes very %&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!ty and that just kills my cool amiga experience.
So I am hoping to make the morphOS machine the machine I use for dos games through dosbox, classic amiga games, demos and apps...
Plus I'm hoping for SOME new software. I also want to control a windows xp extra box through remote desktop, use google docs for anything like that I need...
Watch youtube, email, telnet to bbs systems, (is there a telnet client for morphOS?) YES! I want the elusive every day machine...
If the 1.25ghz emac won't do what I need its a shame, those are kinda sexy even with the big honking crt. Anyhow, at least I'll get to finally try it and decide if buying a supported g5 mac would be a good option to finally get a box to do everything amiga... (and more!)
Please morphos guys, post your experience, let me know after install what I should install or add, what to do to tweak things and so on.
Aros is still rocking, and I hope the best for AROS, but I'm taking a journey to the blue camp for awhile...
:p
-
The eMac will be too anemic power wise to impress or please you, IMO.
My first MOS experience was on a similar machine, and it left a very bad taste in my mouth. But your mileage may vary.
I love MOS, but had I gone off first impressions on the eMac I tried it on first, I would have sworn off it.
-
(Out of curiousity, what's in your AROS box? 3GHz suggests P4 to me, and if that's the case, it ain't AROS that's running like crap. Netburst sprints like a cheetah, but it corners like a yacht.)
Anyway, while the eMac is no great shakes (I'd check your local school and/or recycle center for a later Power Mac G4, you can get them for peanuts,) I have to say I've been pleasantly impressed by MorphOS - while it still fundamentally feels like an early-'90s OS (though in my mind that's no bad thing,) it's got a nice amount of polish and hangs together nicely.
-
If browser is the reason it may be a short journey ; )

As MorphOS itself doesn't emulate original Amiga's chipset, you have to use UAE for HW hitting games and demos. I think that platform doesn't affect to that that much, raw power is what counts mostly... and state of the emulator. Currently E-UAE doesn't have JIT like WinUAE, so don't expect miracles when comparing to it. But otherwise E-UAE from Fab is solid work as usual... and there is project getting JIT on it too, but it's in early beta stage.
I haven't used UAE much on any platform, but what I've tried few times, it's been OK on Mac mini at least.
In short, I want to use morphos for my all things amiga box (new and old)
New stuff which works directly under MorphOS without external emulator is very quick. Many apps do work, but games/demos supporting RTG/AHI are bit rarer. There are few good ones working nicely though. For demos I'll recommend to check this: http://amiga.bbs.fi/demopack_morphos/
I've been a big aros supporter for years but no really, I need a modern browser and other things aros just can't do.
MorphOS has the best browser situation of all amigaish platforms, but it still can't do everything what you can do on mainstream platforms. But for me it's been enough now and I haven't had to go on other systems for a long time. Be sure to update OWB to latest available version, because MorphOS itself comes with a bit old version currently. And update & take in use the external scripts too to get best performance from youtube etc (btw. watch videos in full screen (overlay) mode, that makes miracles to cpu usage).
Plus I'm hoping for SOME new software. I also want to control a windows xp extra box through remote desktop, use google docs for anything like that I need...
Those work nicely. MorphOS includes rdesktop and OWB should work with Google docs.
telnet to bbs systems, (is there a telnet client for morphOS?) YES! I want the elusive every day machine...
You have to use old Amiga telnet clients... AmTelnet or DCTelnet are ok for bbs use.
If the 1.25ghz emac won't do what I need its a shame, those are kinda sexy even with the big honking crt. Anyhow, at least I'll get to finally try it and decide if buying a supported g5 mac would be a good option to finally get a box to do everything amiga... (and more!)
Yeah, test it properly how you like it. I myself would rather take something else with modern display. I find MorphOS nice and enough for everything I want to do and having boosted up Amiga experience, but as an Amigan you know that you have to accept that you still can't do every single things you could do on mainstream OS.
-
It sounds like you'll get much better performance for the same money if you invest in a new or used windoze machine with winuae.
-

I love MOS, but had I gone off first impressions on the eMac I tried it on first, I would have sworn off it.
The eMac will be fine Steven.
My first machine was slower 933MHz Quicksilver PowerMac.
-
Like I said, all a matter of perspective. The base model eMac I tried MOS on performed about as well as a doorstop for me, and he did mention he wanted to try and use it and MOS as a daily driver PC.
Just my opinion that it doesn't have the grunt for that task, but again, YMMV based on perspective.
Good thing about MOS is you can try before you buy.
-
If you with to run Amiga games in UAE 1.25. GHz can be little slow. YMMV but when it comes to emulation faster is better. PowerMac G4 at 2 GHz or G5 could be better but IMO real (basic) Amiga is the best for games and demos.
For Telnet you can use Term or AmTelnet.
-
I have an eMac and I have MorphOS on it. It runs quite well, I have been testing MorphOS for a bit now and finally am registering it and I love it.

Yes, the machine I use daily is only slightly faster (a 1.42 GHzBook with only 32mb of vram).
It works fine.
I have two G5 PowerMacs, but for most uses they are overkill.
Running programs that require UAE can be more demanding.
So start with "friendly" programs first.
I know you (and you're smart, Steven), I think you'll dig it.

First post from new emac. Still running osx. I think I changed my mind and will dual boot... Is there a tutorial somewhere for dual booting osx/morphOS?
Only a 40 gig drive in this thing though... How much space for MorphOS?
I am aware this thing may be too slow for some things, more interested in just testing MorphOS. If its too slow to smoothly run aga games and other intensive classic stuff, I will get a supported g5 mac before I register.
I don't like there registration being strapped to one machine... So I wouldn't want to register for this machine then find its too slow...
Steven
-
Okay booted from cd... But apparently owb does not work.
Can someone tell me how to set network in preferences? I'm using a wired network. osx autodetects and just works...
Do I have to do a hard drive install before networking works? Kinda wanted to check this out before commiting to install...
Steven
-
okay got network working. Don't have osx 10.4 install cds so I will have to
resize the partition with ubuntu to install.
does anyone know, can I use airport card or wifi in MorphOS? If not I will have to leave this machine downstairs next to my router and use a wired connection grrrr...
This emac has no airport card, is anyone using something I can get on ebay for wifi with morphOS?

1. There are nice dual boot guides out there check morphzone and maybe even official morphos site?
2. 40gb is plenty
3. Good idea on not reg on the emac, you will prolly want a better mac to register it to. Emac is one of the low end configs for morphos afaik.

I asked a similar question awhile back. My eMac has an Airport Extreme card in it, and no, it does not work in MorphOS. I was told there are others that could be used to get WiFi in MorphOS. However at the moment the Airport Extreme card does not work.

MorphOS won't work with Apple's "AirPort" cards, but certain Atheros chipsets are supported. I got a Netgear WG511T card for my Powerbook G4 and MOS works quite happily with it - the only point of concern with that is that I'm not sure how much space there is inside the eMac for its internal PCMCIA AirPort card and whether it would fit.

Pretty sure there is one. Hopefully someone can point you in the right direction if you don't find it yourself.

The NG OS's are still pretty lite so unless you put a load of media files and the Mac side isn't taking up much space you'll be fine.

Maybe get a faster G4 or G5 anyway. If G5 it might be worth waiting for support for later PCIe Macs with Radeon X1xx0 cards. X1300/x1500 driver was shown on Sam460 at Pianeta so hopefully not too long to wait.

Well what sucks is I have a 2 year old and I moved all my computer stuff upstairs because well... he likes to destroy everything in HIS living room... :)
I didn't feel like running network cables upstairs so I just use wifi but the router and stuff is downstairs.
Maybe its time to run some network cables, but thats just going to be a big PITA.
-
Here's another stupid question, but what joysticks work with morphOS? do the competition pro usb joysticks work?

I recommend a wireless bridge - extremely handy. Plug wired device into bridge, the bridge wirelessly connects to router, and that's it! They're a little pricey, but I found it to be an extremely worthwhile investment.

wireless bridge (sometimes sold as a wireless game adapter) will do it, or Ethernet over mains can work quite well if you have a large house wire poor wireless coverage.

I have a Netgear WNCE2001 bridge that works well on my iBook.

Well I am happy to say I am posting this from MORPHOS on the emac.
The dual booting was a little confusing but I'm happy that it worked. GOOD GUIDE in pdf
for that saved the day.
First impressions... Slick, fast and beautiful. I want kens icons and would like to change the theme or window borders though. Does morphos allow os3.x window decorations like AROS?
MorphOS flies compared to osx. Very nice!
-
Wierd but youtube videos do not play... Just kind of hangs, few minute wait and video still does not start... Thats a big dissapointment because that was one thing I hate about AROS...
Anyone know why or is there some settings I need to tweak?
-
You should make sure you have the preference set for Youtube to use HTML5 instead of Flash. Do so here: http://www.youtube.com/html5
Also note that Youtube is constantly messing around with their database design, so also make sure the support scripts (http://www.amiga-news.de/en/news/AN-2014-02-00044-EN.html) are up to date (they were just updated, so what you have in your stock install may be obsolete).
You might also need Fab's port of MPlayer installed. Not sure about this one.
-
Was using html5...
I don't know I also just borked my install by installing the deluxe chrystalis pack.
Bunch of stuff wasn't working, getting netbsd socket error message.
Reinstall, but looks like some of that chrystalis stuff still there, but the browser works. Now going to format the partition and do a clean install again...
So far all i can say about MorphOS is that it looked nice. NOT having a good first time trying this.
-
Yeah, the Chrysalis pack is an absolute catastrophe.
-
Would have been nice to know that. A few youtube videos and web pages mention it as the first thing you should install after morphos.
I guess it was good at some point... But currently, it total screws up the latest morphOS fresh installaion.
Other first impressions... When you install icaros, you have lots of programs,
lots of software to do most things.
MorphOS is really barren in comparison. My first suggestion to the MorphOS team is include more apps. This is really light on software. Maybe thats good so you can build your own system, but to a new morphos user, its not encouraging.
Aren't there lots of morphos games, productivity apps and more? Why not just
include them on the install?
Tomorrow I will reformat the partition and reinstall to fix the chrystalis virus.
:)
After that I'm going to try and install a few things, like milkytracker and also
test how well or not well this runs classic games, demos and apps. So far my experience has not been positive. I hope tomorrow finds me liking this more...
Steven
-
The ISO is "barren" for good reason, like some people having slow/capped internet access.
What IMO should be included (but probraly never will...) is geit's grunch (http://geit.de/eng_grunch.html) makes installing and updating SW quiet easy.
It also makes sure you're allwaysn on the newest version of those utube-scripts.
-
Steven, for youtube I find spoofing a iPad works better than just specifying html5 playback.
So you like Ambient?
Thought you might.
Just using MorphOS' interface sold me once I'd installed it (again on a "lowly" 933MHz Quicksilver).

Don't install Chrysalis, just mount it's ISO image and drag and drop the apps and games you want to your work: partition.
Personally I advise using PFS3 for work: as it's nice and fast and doesn't feck up as easily as SFS.
Install Grunch too and add it to wbstartup so it will automatically update anything you have installed.
Create a custom screen for Odyssey too and disable Enhanced Display for that screen as it makes browsing a bit snappier.
-
Here's another stupid question, but what joysticks work with morphOS? do the competition pro usb joysticks work?
Yes they do work. Any HID compatible USB controller works.
MorphOS is really barren in comparison. My first suggestion to the MorphOS team is include more apps. This is really light on software. Maybe thats good so you can build your own system, but to a new morphos user, its not encouraging.
I think there's lots of nice software on the ISO. For example Flacapella, Jalapeno, OWB, RDesktop, RemoteShell, SCANdal, Scribble, ShowGirls, Sketch, Transfer, VPDF, Jukebox... actually what else you could hope that much more? I think almost all areas you'll need for basic usage are covered. Only thing missing I can figure now is movie player, but it's for licencing issues. You'll need to install more software on Windows installation than on MorphOS to get started :)
Wierd but youtube videos do not play... Just kind of hangs, few minute wait and video still does not start... Thats a big dissapointment because that was one thing I hate about AROS...

As I said in the first page of this thread, you'll need to update the latest OWB and its scripts.
Visit http://fabportnawak.free.fr/owb/ and http://fabportnawak.free.fr/owb/scripts/ and read the OWB readme for youtube part!
-

Install Grunch too and add it to wbstartup so it will automatically update anything you have installed.
If you plan to use Grunch for updating it might also make sense to use it for actual isntalling.
This way you make sure that you won't miss any needed configuration files orv external libraries/classes (Grunch will check and autoinstall those too).
-

Install the OWB scripts with Grunch then enable them in Odyssey with the script manager.
Job done.

Good point though there are a couple of nice things on the Chrysalis ISO that aren't available in Grunch. Not many but there are some.
-
Hey,
Good news my lust is over too. I bought a laptop for MorphOS as well. It just 80 bucks. Now...where can one register for the latest version. Oh, I bought the A1134 one. It is old, fat, slow compared to other models....perfect for the experience :)
-

You can get the latest ISO image from http://morphos.de
To register it run the RegTool program from SYS:Tools
-
Well I managed to reformat the dh2 drive and do a clean new re-install, removing whatever problems the chrystalis pack caused.
So far, my experience with MorphOS has not been at all positive. First of all, youtube videos does not work. I'm going to try spoofing as ipad but so far, youtube videos do not play, and that was one of the big selling points to me since AROS can not view youtube videos (yet)
Next, the spareness of the initial install means you can't really try much out, other than checking out the system core stuff like utilities...
Unfortunately, no support for airport card means no wifi. I've moved this machine upstairs and since I have no wired ethernet or hubs this means no internet with morphOS. Later tonight I'm going to copy a bunch of morphos stuff to a thumb drive and see how some programs actually work...
I guess I was spoiled in AROS because an icaros distribution includes tons of software. This? almost nothing.
The other thing is themes and the look and feel. Yep just don't like it.
Appears to MACLIKE to me. Why folders and not drawers?
No screen dragging?
Anyone have a list of system friendly 68k apps I can try out?
And and I'm trying to remain positive, so I'll keep trying it out. The one thing
positive I can say is that it boots in 6 seconds, even on a lowly emac 1.25ghz.
-
There are way too many 68k programs to list all system friendly applications but generally productivity software runs.
-
Yes but I was asking for suggestions. Can you suggest some? Hopefully I can find some online...
I will also be testing classic apps like games and demos in emulator on morphOS.
-
I believe the various Angband variants (http://aminet.net/search?query=angband) are system-friendly. They're also well worth playing ;)
-
Long day today, tomorrow is another day. I want to test classic apps in emulator and system friendly apps next...
So far, not really digging this. In my estimation its better than os4 but worse than aros, but this is just my initial feelings. Hoping I'll like it more after running it through its paces...
-

I have installed AmiTradeCenter, AmiNetRadio, Scout, Blacks Editor (text editor) and SID4Amiga.

Never mind then.

Did you do the steps I've given earlier? But anyway, YouTube changes its internals every other day to get rid of anything else than "official way", so sometimes it's a bit catching game with user scripts. If you find embedded way too hard, maybe you could try GetVideo (http://aminet.net/package/comm/www/getvideo) to play videos... although it has also stopped to show some videos for me just recently. Earlier it did work just perfectly for years.
Next, the spareness of the initial install means you can't really try much out, other than checking out the system core stuff like utilities...
Hope you did find that Applications dir too, but next step is to install Grunch (http://geit.de/eng_grunch.html) and visit MorphOS-files (http://morphos-files.net/index2.php). Anyway this shouldn't be any problem if you're used classic Amiga ever.
Unfortunately, no support for airport card means no wifi. I've moved this machine upstairs and since I have no wired ethernet or hubs this means no internet with morphOS.
You can get it into WLAN with handy mini routers like Asus WL-330N (http://www.asus.com/Networking/WL330N/) or with similar cheaper options from TP-link etc. Internal Airport support might come later, but as it's Broadcom chipset, you don't get needed data to support it without bleed.
The other thing is themes and the look and feel. Yep just don't like it.
Appears to MACLIKE to me. Why folders and not drawers?
It's just cosmetics which can be changed.
No screen dragging?
Just like mostly on RTG systems on classic Amigas, screen dragging is lost. But there are solutions if you really want it back. Take a look on Dragon (http://amigazeux.net/dragon/).
Anyone have a list of system friendly 68k apps I can try out?
What I have installed for example: FXPaint2, PPaint 7.x, ArtEffect4, ImageFX 4.5, Photogenics 5, Elastic/Fantastic Dreams, TV-Paint, GIF-Toolkit, Real3D 3, AMPlifier, AmigaAMP, GoldED, PageStream, AmigaWriter, FinalWriter, FryingPan, MakeCD, TurboCalc, P96Speed, VirusZ, IBrowse, AmTelnet, DCTelnet, Magellan2, NetInfo, SimpleMail, RC-ftpd, smbfs, netfs, Xami, wu-ftpd... few games like Earth 2140, HBMonopoly, Myst, dynAMIte, Payback, Feeble Files... at least those are on my start menus, probably lot more on separate dirs. And dozens of cli commands...
And many 68k programs have native MorphOS ports nowadays, like AmIRC, WookieChat, SimpleMail, YAM, SongPlayer, CED, Diavolo etc...
-
Never mind then.
-
Have you actually Read The Fuc!ng Manual?

Ive been sceptic for quite some time to home plugs sice it's early days. But I gave it a go in our new house due to our position of the living room compared to the computer room where the PfSense box are.
So I tried a home plug solution for the HTPC and I must say I have not had a single problem and the speed is resonable, I have a 1000/1000Mb/s fiber connection and the htpc do not need more then 50-100Mb/s and that the home plugs I use deliver without problems.
I don't use wireless since it works so much better with cables but now I will use home plugs for less critical machines which saves a lot of cable management :)
So I will recommend haywire to try home plugs, they have matured a lot.
-
RTFM yes point taken, I'm pretty sure I scanned through the readme file must have missed the youtube stuff.
And while we're on that subject don't go attacking a new users because who thinks "Gee my browser is not working right, let me update my user scripts" Any other OS system, the browser just works right from a clean
install, so there. Sorry this does not work from a clean install, but it does not work right.
And geez, people are sure critical. Sorry I haven't drank the cool aid from either the red or blue camps so I'm still allowed to think independantly and have an opinion, even if you don't like it. I'm allowed to think it looks too mac like or that I don't like the look of the ugly window decorators. Yes you can change it? Great, but I'm allowed say I don't like the default look.
If you do good for you.
On the chrystalis pack, someone here besides me said its a huge mess. Don't assume user error when others are saying it borks the whole system...
So far, both the browser does not work right, and the "upgrade pack" everyone said should be the first thing you install totally screwed up my system, and your attacking me like I'm retarded.
Hey dumbass, there is nothing in the manual about this software addon everyone says is a must have completely screwing up the system, so rtfm? That would not help regain the hours I lost having to completely start over with the install.
Oh and I'm sorry I'm not allowed to ask questions because other people have asked the same questions. GEEZ what a friendly bunch of nerds you are...
-

Well, we all have been helpfully saying that update the scripts all the time in this thread. We're sorry that Flash is closed source and YouTube is a bitch, can't do much for it. Companies behind aren't interested to support marginal systems or even being nice for 3rd party support.

I'm allowed to think it looks too mac like or that I don't like the look of the ugly window decorators. Yes you can change it? Great, but I'm allowed say I don't like the default look.
Calm down, nobody isn't arguing about that. I don't use default theme either, because I think it's a bit too candy like.
On the chrystalis pack, someone here besides me said its a huge mess. Don't assume user error when others are saying it borks the whole system...
I think most of us are a bit sceptical about Chrysalis pack, that's why we haven't been recommending to install it. At least I'd wait few days it coming stable from the beta stage.
So far, both the browser does not work right, and the "upgrade pack" everyone said should be the first thing you install totally screwed up my system
I think we didn't say it should be installed.. and elsewhere it's usually said that it's good for testing before building own setup and that it may cause problems. Anyway it should do that much harm to test on first install because it's not that big step to start over if you don't like that.
Sorry for the negative feelings, but I think we've tried to stay realistic here...

No screen dragging?
No by default.
But ... https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=1450510868510396&set=vb.1441856596042490&type=3&theater
http://amigazeux.net/dragon/req.php
Dragon is a small commodity that tries to mimic screendragging as it is known from AmigaOS3.x with AGA and some CGX versions (and soon OS4 too). Dragon is not perfect. All that Dragon allows you to do is to drag the frontmost screen down, so that any screen behind it becomes visible. Releasing the mouse-button again will pop the screen back into its original position. Pressing the right mouse-button while dragging will beam you to the screen shown behind or cancel the drag depending on your settings.
It's not possible to have th dragged screen stay at the dragged position. This commodity simply is good for having a quick look at what is going on on the screen behind without switching screens.
Dragon works best when all screens have at least the same colour depth.

Never mind then.

When it came to my decision making, it was a choice between OS 4.1 and MorphOS. To me I figured MorphOS is a better choice one:
1) I get a hardware for just 80 bucks
2) I can have the OS in a laptop
3) There are more software availability, drivers and features than it's cousin OS 4.1
So things like screen dragging, bloated software during CD installation, theme and getting youtube to run 100% perfect like Windows, Mac or Linux was not on my priority list.
I think sometimes we have to compromise with what we got and actually go around any obstacle in order to get the best of what we got.
-
I agree. I'm going to play with it more this week. I'm pretty sure I'll like it
alot more once I get alot more software installed for testing.
Many people here provided lots of sources, thanks!
As far as the EMac itself, I really like it. Its compact, nice keyboard and mouse, Apple makes good elegantly designed hardware... I was just never big on paying so much for it. Luckily, g4/g5 hardware is super cheap now.
Best regards,
Steven

I been using them for years and years. The newer generations are really small now and you even get ones that have power pass through and wifi though they little more expensive. What I have done in my last few houses, power plug from hub connected to fiber, to power plug upstairs connected to old router. Swithc DHCP off on router and make sure its in same IP range as other router. Hey presto wirless throughout house and four ports for wired connection in man den :)

I've got a Power Mac G4 "Quicksilver", which has been lying around for some time now unused. I got it free of charge from an office which advertised on http://www.freecycle.org and I just had to carry it home. At first I had no idea how it compared with a Mac I'd been using in a recording studio, but I soon found out how incompatible it was. It came with OSX 10.3.9 and iWork installed, but I didn't get any install discs with it. Eventually, my installation got corrupted. I guessed the password was the name of the company I got it from and found that it accepted it. Unfortunately, I found I was unable to get my hands on any install CDs or DVDs for it. Eventually, I got a DMG file of an install DVD for OSX 10.5 through Dropbox, but then I found that I couldn't manage to burn this either on my Power Mac G4 or on my laptop under Ubuntu Linux or under Windows 7. I finally took the DMG file on a USB memory stick to the recording studio and they couldn't burn it on their Mac Pro Intel XEON either!
Meanwhile, my Power Mac G4 "Quicksilver" has been sitting there unused and has become just a shelf for magazines, books, and floppy disks. I really feel I must do something with it, but I'm not sure what. This speed is 867Mhz, but I can't remember the other specs at the moment. It has plenty of space on TWO hard drives. I think the possibilities are as follows.
1. Finally get an OSX 10.5 or 10.6 installation DVD and install that (unlikely, as I've failed so far)
2. Install MorphOS (I managed to boot from a DVD, so this proves it's compatible)
3. Install AmigaOS 4 (NOT 4.1) using an ISO file I downloaded tonight which says it uses the loader Moana and will install onto a Mac Mini G4. I don't know if my Power Mac G4 is compatible.
4. Install Yellow Dog Linux
5. Install Free BSD for Power PC
What do you think I should do with it and why?
-
2. Install MorphOS (I managed to boot from a DVD, so this proves it's compatible)
This is your best option. OS X will be completely unsupported on this machine - Apple seem to pretend that PowerPC Macs don't exist any more.
3. Install AmigaOS 4 (NOT 4.1) using an ISO file I downloaded tonight which says it uses the loader Moana and will install onto a Mac Mini G4. I don't know if my Power Mac G4 is compatible.
Best advice here: forget it. Moana is not complete, and wouldn't work anyway. It was abandoned when it was decided to stick to new hardware for OS4 so that it wasn't tied to obsolete hardware and technologies (but please let's not argue about the pro's and con's of that decision in this thread as it's OT and done to death already).
4. Install Yellow Dog Linux
5. Install Free BSD for Power PC
What's the point? It'd just be an underpowered, incompatible version of what you can run on any old PC.
What do you think I should do with it and why?
MorphOS, definitely.

I know I could only install OSX 10.4, 10.5, or 10.6 which would have to be for Power PC, but it has the look and feel of Mac OSX and can run various old Mac software, which can produce files compatible with other operating systems. This software includes iLife with Garageband and a web page designer.
It seems that I may be able to install AmigaOS 4.0, but at least I can TRY anyway.
I should install SOMETHING else onto it, because it's not doing anything at the moment.
MorphOS is something I'm still considering on installing.

@ AmigaBruno
OS4 won't work. Moana is hard-coded to require PowerMac10,2 hardware, which corresponds to the Mac Mini G4 "silent update" (1.33GHz and 1.5GHz machines only). Besides, it's an old, buggy, beta version of OS4. The kernel and drivers are incomplete, barely work and will never be updated. If you want to try it on your Quicksilver, I suggest not spending more time on it other than to see "Well, that didn't work" after the initial boot attempt.
EDIT: And to actually talk about some things your Quicksilver *can* do: I would suggest triple-booting MorphOS, OSX 10.4, and OSX 10.5 (10.6 requires x86).
10.4 is the last version of OSX to support "classic" emulation, meaning you can run programs requiring MacOS 9 and lower - opens up a big back catalog of software.
10.5 runs some newer stuff. Most of the recent programs that still support PPC require 10.5
And MorphOS is to fulfill your Amiga needs :)
@ haywirepc
You may like this AmigaOS 3.x skin (http://aminet.net/package/pix/theme/AOS3.x_Skin) if you're finding MorphOS's visuals not to your liking. I use this one and am quite fond of it!
-
The Quicksilver can also boot OS9 natively, which is really a better solution if you want to run classic Mac software.

Unfortunately, I've tried to buy some compatible Mac OSX install DVDs from eBay, but I always got outbid, then they started getting rarer. Before I got this Mac, I bought a Blueberry iMac, which runs OS9. On the Power Mac G4, I found that I couldn't do much with OSX 10.3.9 and that OSX 10.4 was a milestone, so I've been trying to upgrade it. I don't know what could be so special about any Mac OS9 software in this day and age to make me want to run it.
I recently read about Darwin OS, but I don't think installing it would enable me to fix this Mac.
I think I'll have to study Uboot to find out how it works.

"barely work"
That's exactly what for A1 G4. So running OS4.

Okay so a quick update. Since I have no internet on the morphos machine atm, I just copied lots of stuff to a thumb drive and played with it again all night. One positive thing I'll say is that when I insert the thumb drive, morphos responds well and that works...
While it was cool to see alot of system friendly demos running, many other things gave me trouble...
Milkytracker and several other things I tried to run would not work, needed a different version of the sdl library. I create most of my music with trackers, and no not octamed, but any xm compattible tracker (skale, renoise, ft2, madtracker or milky) so milkytracker not working, not good. Will try dosbox and ft2 tomorrow night.
UAE - Can someone tell me how to set the paths right to find the rom files
and how can I run adf files? I have a legal copy of amiga forever and trying to use those roms but no luck, thought I was setting the paths right, but no good. Another major blow to my liking this setup. Sorry but Icaros lets you insert your amiga forever cd and it installs everything beautifully...
And I'm sorry to compare this to icaros but I've been using icaros for years and these things just come already set up and working. No hassle or hair pulling required, so this is another negative for me so far.
And again, please lets not all attack me, this is just my opinion, and these are the facts of my experience with this so far.
So to sum up : First browser does not work, the the "Ultimate" add on borks the whole system, reinstall, now milky tracker does not work and neither does a bunch of other stuff depending on different sdl libraries (I believe I saw error messages asking for version 10,11,12)
Can't get uae working, but I have gotten uae working on linux, vanilla aros, icaros...
Next bit of criticism is on games. While its nice that people ported stuff, I don't want to spend hours hunting down game data files... most of the good
game ports you'll need to hunt down original copies of those games to get the morphos versions to work, which is quite frankly in my opinion, another project I don't need since I already have enough problems to try and fix with this.
Finally I will just say this... I wish everyone working on any NG amiga project the best, but I am not encouraged or feeling like paying for this is a good idea
at the moment. (Honestly I'd rather contribute 111$ to AROS right now) I will continue to work on my problems and see if I can sort them out and justify paying for this. I would like to pay just to help them continue to develop this... But so far all in all its been an extremely negative experience.
(Sigh) very disappointing.

I dont have UAE but found couple of links:
http://www.morphzone.info/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?topic_id=8512&forum=3
http://aminet.net/package/misc/emu/rhLaunch-morphos
Kickstart files go to rom directory according to this post:
http://www.morphzone.info/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?forum=3&topic_id=8512&post_id=92460&viewmode=flat&sortorder=0&showonepost=1
Well, it's not complicated. I even provided presets for A1200, A500 and Workbench usage in the archive, in Conf/ directory.
Assuming you put the kickstart files in the right place (roms/ directory), you just start UAE that way:
uae -f conf/A500.conf or
uae -f conf/A1200.conf or
uae -f conf/wb.conf
and so on ...
if you need to pass an adf, you do it that way:
uae -f conf/A1200.conf -0 blah.adf
Now, i suggest you bind UAE to ADF mimetype in Ambient with that kind of commaand : path:to/uae/uae -f path:to/uae/conf/blah.conf -0 %sp to ADF
That way, you can start any ADF just by doubleclicking it.
I hope it helps.

Did you install SDL (http://aminet.net/package/util/libs/powersdl)?

It is not always possible due to copyright reasons.

At least you can try before buying :)

Which version of powersdl.library do you have installed? Dosbox is probably too slow for anything with that CPU.
UAE - Can someone tell me how to set the paths right to find the rom files
Edit your UAE config file (.uaerc or if you use separate config then some .conf file). There's line: kickstart_rom_file=path:to/romfile
If you have your ROM in your UAE dir you can use PROGDIR path. For example:
kickstart_rom_file=PROGDIR:Roms/Kick40068
and how can I run adf files?
Look at the Bonus dir in your E-UAE installation, there's instructions how to add E-UAE launching for ADF files in Ambient. After that you can double click ADF files to run them, or right click to get different options to run it (A1200 vs A500 environment).
Sorry but Icaros lets you insert your amiga forever cd and it installs everything beautifully...
Well, maybe E-UAE could have some installer to be easier, but it's not OS's job to do that. It's probably more important in AROS to have the emulation setted up in first place, because it isn't binary compatible otherwise. In MorphOS you can run Amiga software directly, so it probably hasn't been that important to everyone. At least I just use UAE for occasional tests only and do real gaming/demos on real Amigas... never felt that comfortable with any UAE variation.
And I'm sorry to compare this to icaros but I've been using icaros for years and these things just come already set up and working. No hassle or hair pulling required, so this is another negative for me so far.
BTW. is this Icaros thing official base setup for AROS or rather like Chrysalis pack on MorphOS?
Next bit of criticism is on games. While its nice that people ported stuff, I don't want to spend hours hunting down game data files... most of the good

I'd find it surprising if AROS or some other versions would have made the deals to distribute those copyrighted data files, but is it really so? Unless there's licence, then it's illegal to have them spreaded with the game ports. If the game needs separate freeware data files, then the link is provided with the port. Anyway, I can't see how this could differ between platforms.
-
"BTW. is this Icaros thing official base setup for AROS or rather like Chrysalis pack on MorphOS?"
The base are the nightly builds that are rather minimal and primitive, there is no "official setup" but the different preconfigured distributions. Chrysalis pack is a addon as I understand it installing additional software to the standard setup but the standard setup already perfectly working for its own. On "AROS" there is nothing that can be compared to the standard installation of MorphOS. It is propably more comparable to the Linux world with its kernel and the different distributions.

You can only run up to leopard/10.5.
I have that on one of my G5s, and with the TenFour Fiox browser it is tolerable.
MorphOS would be better for the Quicksilver as its less resource intense.
My first MorphOS system was a 933 MHz Quicksilver.
It ran fine under MorphOS.

OS4 won't work. Moana is hard-coded to require PowerMac10,2 hardware, which corresponds to the Mac Mini G4 "silent update" (1.33GHz and 1.5GHz machines only).
I can run it on my Mac Mini 1.42ghz 32vram, both the kickstart screen and system booting into the os. it's just too limited, but you could made an idea how it could be. But after getting MorphOS, i wasn't bothered to tinker with it anymore.
-
Leopard would crawl on that thing. Crawled on my mac min 1.5. Tiger was just about bearable on mac min. I wouldn't bother with mac osx on that machine will not give you a very pleasant experience. Try MorphOS for sure or get a newer mac :)
-
Not long ago I also installed MOS on my MDD. I also installed the Crysalis pack and it worked well and for me it was a big benefit with a lot of installed programmes and tools. I read that you should only install the right chrysalis version for the right MOS version - otherwise there could be problems. As far as I know there is no ready crysalis pack for the latest MOS or is it?
Also I had no problem with OWB and youtube at the beginning - then after the update to a newer version of MOS with the old chrysalis pack still installed I found out that youtube did not play the videos anymore directly in the window (they seem to start but quickly they stop) but I have to download them. I think it could have to do with the need for updating the scripts I read here - I thought it was the update -> I shuould check it.
So I must say the experience with MOS was quite good. But setting the different screens is a little hassle me thinks...
-
It has plenty of space on TWO hard drives. I think the possibilities are as follows.
1. Finally get an OSX 10.5 or 10.6 installation DVD and install that (unlikely, as I've failed so far)

4. Install Yellow Dog Linux
5. Install Free BSD for Power PC
What do you think I should do with it and why?
Go for a dual boot system with MorphOS and OS X 10.4 or 10.5. OS X crawls and restricts you nearly everywhere in your freedom to do things as you like, but offers a few nice programs that are missing on MorphOS. I dual boot my Macs, ratio is probably about 95% MorphOS 5 % OS X.
-
...youtube..
If you have issues with youtube the easiest fix is to spoof as ipad. That should always work - regardless of any scripts or activated/deactivated html5 mode.
-
My only problem is this..
The unregistered version of MorphOS includes the full functionality, but slows down operation after a 30 minutes period until you choose to reboot your computer.
I can not justify spending 108 bucks on a OS that I can't fully check
out give me 30 days full speed then were talking..
-
I can not justify spending 108 bucks on a OS that I can't fully check out give me 30 days full speed then were talking..
First of all - you can get the license for as low as 49€, or 79€ (depending on the hardware). Secondly - you can check the OS for as long as you like, just reboot every 30 minutes (really, how long does it take to reboot? 20 seconds?). And I believe "as long as you like" is enough time to fully check out an OS.
-
Well 108$ is about 79Euro and MorphOS is only cheaper on seriously crippled HW (Efika + Pegasos1).
But you do have a point:
- 30 mins/boot is more than enough to check wether certain apps exist and work
- 30 mins/boot is more than enough to check wether one can get the hang on how to use MorphOS
- 30 mins/boot is more than enough to check wether often visited websites work with OWB
etc etc etc
Also with a 30 day trial there would for sure be clever people finding a way to reset that counter (as it would have to be stored on disk).
If after that you still can't decide wether MorphOS is worth the equivalent of redrumloa-2-nights-out, MorphOS and yourself simple aren't made for another.
-
Actually, 30 minutes at a time was adequate to get the port of Cinnamon Writer working under MorphOS, so it ought to be adequate for evaluation.

I must say this is a great feature. As example, as soon as SAM460ex support is out, I ll be testing it for free, and pay once I can / support is mature.

Its the reason I went with MorpohOS. Wasnt spending the money on Hardware and software to try out something I would ultimately hardly use
