Title: Very strange video inputs on 1084s
Post by: Sutty100 on January 06, 2014, 08:41:28 PM
I bought a replacement 1048s as my old one was on its last legs, colour was brighter on the right then the left which was starting to annoy me. Got a replacement which actually came with a commodore PC10-III which I didn't really want but it was the cheapest option on Ebay. PC10-III is actually quite cool but antiquated when compared to an Amiga, although I think they are from around the same year (A500 that is).

Anyway I've discovered the connections on the back are very strange and I guess designed for the PC10-III video out, which I have the cable for. CGA I think. The amiga monitor cable connects into the end on that cable which is supposed to go into the PC10 so I thought great just connect amiga monitor cable out to PC10 cable in and plug pc10 cable out into the monitor. No joy. So what are my options for best video quality from an Amiga 1200/600 into this monitor. Or should I abandon the plan and source another monitor...which I really don't have room for! Pic attached of the ports.

Commodore, in their infinite wisdom, made about 20 different models of the "1084", all of them with different connectors. The one you have there will work fine with your 23-pin Amiga video output, just need to source the right cable.

Here's a reference for your amusement:

Edit: personally I'd recommend if you can fit it in your budget, get an Indivision and use a modern monitor. Just IMHO. ;)

I did think it was best to use modern monitor but now I think the old games just look nicer on a CRT! Sort of blurs the jaggyness!

So which port would the 23pin cable signal ultimately end up going in? The TTL one or the other?

Why did commodore not change the model numbers! bah! but thanks for that link very handy!

Amiga would use the 6-pin one, "lin RGB", at least with the cables I have.  I assume it's possible to use either one, just depending on which cable you get, LOL.  Commodore designed these things to be used with their entire range: C64's, C128, PC's, Amiga's, etc., and went with the cheapest suppliers, hence so many different connectors.  :(

So would this cable do the job?

they did, look at the sticker on the back. there are 1084s-d1,d2,etc and what i think yours is, a 1084 with the P- these were typical pal monitors i think.

Din pin patterns can be all over the place. If you can solder you can make your own connector or DB 9 pin to Din 6pin adaptor for your old cable. You should be able to find the pin outs on the interweb.

Here they are: http://old.pinouts.ru/Video/C1084a_pinout.shtml

It didn't fit very well and the image was all yellow! :-( dont think the pin layout was quite the same :-( I'm no good with a soldering iron, gone back to using the slightly dodgy monitor as brighter colours on one side is better then using composite cable into the "new" monitor as that isn't as sharp!
