Title: Public Release of MorphOS 3.4
Post by: Andre.Siegel on December 14, 2013, 02:30:53 PM
The MorphOS development team is proud to announce the public release of MorphOS 3.4, which introduces faster R300 graphics drivers, improved video playback on G5-based systems, support for non-native display resolutions on various PowerBooks, screen blanker password protection, and numerous bug fixes and other improvements. For an overview of the included changes, please read our release notes (http://www.morphos-team.net/releasenotes/3.4).

We strongly urge new users to carefully read our installation (http://www.morphos-team.net/installation) and troubleshooting guides (http://www.morphos-team.net/faq) before they attempt to install MorphOS for the first time. Existing users can upgrade via the familiar procedure but are encouraged to read the guides as well. MorphOS 3.4 is available for download in our files section (http://www.morphos-team.net/downloads).

Does the latest GFX system make the Mac Mini 1.25/1.33/1.42/1.5GHz machines GFX systems that utilise the onboard Radeon 9200 32MB/64MB systems run any faster, and if so, by how much?

I only see GFX charts for PowerMac models shown at this stage, so knowing how it affects the Mac Mini systems would also be good to know - if it does.

Wow, I thought we were already at 3.4. I guess the fact that there have been so many (and so frequent) releases is a good indicator, though :)

Thanks, gents!

Thanks MorphOS team. With every release OS4 is further behind MorphOS in features and usability. Well done!

Great update, thank you MorphOS Team!

So, what powerbook models support non-native resolutions now? I can't get any non-native resolution listed in Screen prefs on my PB 5.9..

Cheers!

The 5,9 is a 17" model so that feature isn't supported yet.  Maybe in 3.5?

From what I read, I think the fixes/improvements are mostly about R300, which was kind of crippled before but is now fixed, see this article from bigfoot over at MZ:

http://www.morphzone.info/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?topic_id=9623&forum=11

Also some G5 GFX issues was fixed.

But the changelog does mention "AGP performance improvements" under "Radeon", but I suppose the real life impact of this is probably negligible on most applications we have today.

P.S.
Why don't the recent MorphOS related news show up in the "Recent Threads" list on the front page like other news items? Neither this news item, nor the "Odyssey Web Browser 1.21" popped up there...?

The R200 drivers were already heavily optimised.

I guess wrong category was chosen by mistake. This news is in general news and announcements category when it should have been amiga news and announcements category.

Perhaps moderators (Darrin?) can fix it.

As per Rob here, no further optimization of the Mac Mini video drivers is likely.
The R200 drivers have been optimized for almost a decade.

Time to more onward and upward.

I knew there was definite room for improvement in the R300 drivers.

Next we get a 'clean up' revision (rev 3.5), and in 3.6...some even more interesting features.

This kind of steady improvement is one of MorphIS' strong points.

Been running it on my PowerBook for 24hrs now and it's a real joy to use.  Feels much snappier and responsive, but then again so did 3.3.

Placebo effect perhaps or is it the r300 improvements?

The AGP full bandwidth usage makes video blitting about 4-5 times faster (on G5 machines). This gives much more time for actual video decoding, for instance for heavy h264 movies.
