Been trying for all weekend to get IDEFIX97 working on my A2000 so I could get the CD going.
Using OS 3.1 (clean install) kept copying the installer over from my Win 7 machine with a 3.5" drive attached. Once I get it over to the Amiga, I discovered somewhere along the way the archive file was renamed Instal~1.lha. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to install or work properly.
Finally today I got to thinking about wildcards (don't know why!) but checked the AmigaDOS manual and sure enough the ~ (aka tilde) is a wildcard that specifies "ignore everything before this!
Back to the PC and rename the file to Nstalr.lha and BACK over to the Amiga and Voila! It worked!
What a ROYAL PIA!!!

Sounds like your floppy disks are not set up to support more than 8.3 name extensions. Common problem. Glad you got it resolved! :)
-
The old tilde filename problem. All Amiga users have and will continue to hit that one. That's why I archive up to a transfer file (WinRAR), put it on CF or CD and unarchive on the mig.

Would've been nice to do, but I was installing IDEFIX97 to install a CD!
The ever popular Catch-22 problem!

That's what you get when you use FAT16 formatted floppies :p

As a side note, I really hate when people blame Windows for things that are either (a) operator error, or (b) legacy issues dating back to file systems designed in the 1970's. But I'll climb off my soapbox now, LOL.

Oh come on, probably EVERYONE has done blamed something at some point while they were at fault. Learn from it, and move on :)

Well, ya know, I formatted it on the Amiga...

Go ahead and stay up there... You make a much easier target! :)
After all, aren't almost all Amiga's considered legacy?
-
The last version of CrossDOS (v7?) supports long filenames, but it was a commercial product. The version bundled with the OS is an older one.
I think fat95 (on Aminet) supports floppies if you need an alternative for future sneakernetting :)

I'll look into that.
If I remember next time...

You could probably also have fixed this on the Amiga by renaming the Instal~1.lha file from Workbench, or maybe you could have used the option switch that turns off pattern matching in LhA.
I will also recommend that you install Fat95.

Pretty sure Amigas are considered "obsolete."

I would have thought putting the file name in double quotes would work. It's been a long time since I copied something across from a PC using a floppy but I don't remember ever having problems with files with ~ in them (other than my own ability to recognise what the file was).
-
Didn't think of the double quotes! Have to admit, it's been a bit since I've really dealt with CLI in this much depth.

Okay, to add insult to injury, when I went to test the CD-ROM, I popped my Amiga Forever DVD in and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't read it!
Classic hand to forehead moment when I figured THAT one out!
