Its a lot of little nagging things that never get fixed that make using computers a painful experience. A software upgrade includes more bells and whistles, but doesn't become more user friendly.

And this is exactly why I never upgrade until I have literally no other choice. They just keep making things worse and worse and worse in a thousand miniscule ways that add up to tons of headache...

that's because I still run winxp sp3 on my core i5 2500k, runs fast as hell I do not upgrade because I know very well all winxp tricks
however I have another disk which runs a basic windows 7, but I never use it I have it only to play a few games which requires directX 10

still running xp ..was close to using vista ..got given a copy ..installed it on the computer i use to play movies from utube that my dvd player wont play ..an half its hardware stopped working ..no scsi ..gone ..cd writer ..gone ..etc.. so ive stayed with xp on my main machine ..I3 machine ..its quick ..

Finally got around to updating my virtual windows boxes to 8.1, it's been out like forever....

Lost my Wifi in Win7. Nothing I did got it back. So I finally removed the device from the system and let PnP to find it again. Immediately started to work after driver auto install. No brains needed...

I still use xp on lower spec gear, but for my gaming/media centre rig Im using Win7, both because of dx11, and because xp isn't as efficient with more than 2 cores/threads.

Hm, I got myself an high-end I5 with Windows 7 and it's the nicest computer I've had since years. Much more stable than XP, boots faster and it actually stays fast (I only have recently reinstalled it because I upgraded my harddisk). I've cursed Windows so many times to the deepest layers of hell, but 7 is, well, actually, and this is hard for me to admit, but, eh, it is quite acceptable, quite nice even. Still, it needs work GUI-wise but I haven't tried Windows 8 yet.

Its really is not the computers fault if the user is an idiot that just expects the machine to run without fault having downloaded endless nonsense from the internet and clicked every last link possible. I have a Windows 7 64bit OS and it runs like a dream. But then after all these years I have learned how to keep a computer clean. My Windows95 machine still runs perfectly, as does my Windows98 and my XP machine and Laptop with XP on it. All my Amigas function without fault also..
PS that article was not really about computing. I don't actually think the tech world today even undertstands the concept. Most folk these days think computing is about buying stuff online and posting on chat sites..... I guess that's what computing has become. It is possible to survive without the internet. Most kids these days would have a brain hemorrhage if their internet or telephone stopped working. Ar hum. Such is life.

OK, I thought I was into pain since I still use my A2000 every once and awhile.
But you sir!
You have me beat.
Still using DOS based Windows AND you're OK with it.
Its an obvious case of denial.
As a long time user of Windows, I was perfectly thrilled to be able to shout "DOS, get thee behind me".

And yes, Iggy, 95/98 can be a perfectly pleasant experience - you just have to make sure you get drivers as up-to-date and non-buggy as possible, and then not do stupid things on the Internet.

There are some nice features in Windows 7, but:
1. For most processes (spreadsheets, word processing, Listening to mp3's, databases) my classic Amiga is just as fast if not faster than a decked out (16gb ram, i5, Fast SSD) windows box.
2. My Amiga wins hands down for stability. The apps we use at work will crash windows 7 or require rebuilds of data, and frequent spyware removal. My Amiga just runs for weeks at a time answering the phone, listening to mp3's, home finance, and other items without a single issue. To be fair, the PC is handling much larger and complicated databases than the Amiga, but for 20+ years of technology advancement the net gain in speed, productivity, and stability is dismal.

My latest complaint is the small download manager files you have to get, instead of being able to download the whole file you want.
Also I need an internet connection to recharge my prepaid internet. It restricts you even from the ISP if you run out.

Yep and every bugger thinks you should download a download manager to provide no real features. I can read an update release and misread the dependencies. I don't need a download manager to stuff it up for me.
Managers for Motherboard, Malware checker, Intel components on the motherboard, GFX card. Additionally they may have a "auto detect" element, btw your Java RE needs updating to run it.
FFS I just want to download the latest driver. I do it once every 3-6 months I don't need to install a redundant piece of software to download a driver every 6 months. Tell me the version, the release date, and dependencies (including bios) and I can do the rest.
Now the marketers have pretty looking patch icons and no f**ing version info or sensible order without going into the files to find out. You can tell I'm over it.
Category in the filename, Date released and version, thanks, Now move along.
