Title: getting back into the Amiga - what next?
Post by: Kremlar on August 22, 2013, 02:48:46 AM
Over the past couple of years I've been buying various Commodore and Amiga items off of eBay, Craigslist, Amibay, etc... with the goal of getting back into Commodore 8-bit and Amiga after all this time.  Because I've been so busy with work and family life I haven't done much other than sort through things, fix problems, and make quite a mess.

My last Amiga setup was an Amiga 4000 desktop 040/25 in 1992 or so, so it's been a while.

Work has been slow the past couple of weeks which has allowed me to really clean house in both my office and basement - and finally set up my Amiga 4000T in a dedicated spot!

Here it is:

I have an Amiga 4000T 040/25 with 18MB RAM, Cybervision 64/3D video card, Commodore/Amiga 1080 monitor hooked via RGB, and a Dell LCD hooked to the VGA output.  Is this a good configuration to get a nice, sharp Workbench while still running games on a CRT where I think they'd likely look best?

I have a clean Workbench 3.1 installed on a SCSI attached CF card (thanks Mech!) and am ready to have some fun.

I tried booting some old Amiga game floppies I have, and I was rudely reminded how few games work on a non-Kickstart 1.3, non-68000, non-OCS Amiga.  Basically, I tried about 7 or 8 games and none would work.

Question #1:  I've read a lot about WHDLoad and that seems to be the answer to my prayers.  Before I start randomly searching around, is there a good FAQ anywhere on getting WHDLoad and all these childhood games I remember working on my Amiga 4000T?

Question #2:  My Cybervision 64/3D is installed along with the Cybervision software, and I now have Workbench on my VGA output.  Is this the best way to go, or is there something else I should be doing?  All of my available resolutions are 4:3.  How can I get some widescreen modes available?

It's going to take quite a bit of "unlearning" after all these years running Windows - so please bear with me!

I had the CV64/3D im my A2000 and even in a A1200 at one point a long time ago, but now I just have AGA so my memory is a little foggy, but there is a utility that come with CyberGraphicX that allows you to define new modes. You set the resolution, frequency, dot clock, doublescan, etc...

While you are making modes, may as well make a 320x200 and 320x220 as I don't think they exist by default. I think I made those by cloning the 640x480 and changing it to 320x200 and turning on doublescan. With that you can play some games on  your GFX board.

I think you may need to reboot before new modes are available.

NICE A4000T :)

I would get in on this preorder if you don't have a network board :)

Hiya and welcome back :)

Don't use floppies, nasty things!

WHDLOAD is brilliant and pretty easy to setup, you will be able to run OCS/ECS/AGA and RTG games on your setup.   One easy option is just going with a pre-configured (including WHDLOAD) WorkBench like ClassicWB (http://classicwb.abime.net/).

Also consider upgrading to 3.9, it won't effect your ability to play older games when you are using WHDLOAD and it looks more modern than 3.1.

You've got some other upgrade options to consider, you could grab in Inidivision AGA (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=18&products_id=1148) which will output your classic games via DVI/VGA and then you can ditch the CRT and go for a single monitor setup.

You might also want to get that 040 upgraded to an 060 for some extra speed.

Also check out some of the newer 68k software like ScummVM and NetSurf.

Hey, cool dedicated spot! :D  Looks rather cozy.
(suggestion: anti-static mat)

Someone else must have some links.
Try searching on here and google for WHDload topics.
There is a pre-configured version, but I've never used it.

Yep I put a link to ClassicWB in my post above.
