Title: Anybody know how to.........
Post by: Fade on February 05, 2004, 12:14:44 AM
I have a machine with NO sound, but would like to get YAM to notify me on receipt of filtered mail, by poping up a picture of sender, from the gallery directory.

Anyone know how, or have a YAM Arexx script that will do this?

I guess "Only Amiga makes it possible" doesn't apply in this case.

Or maybe it was just a dumb question.

Neh, I guess you posted at the wrong time at wrong place  :-P  ;-)

But how do you mean "no sound" ? All Amiga's have the same sound chip, so you should have at least 4 channels 8 Bit stereo sound... (Unless you mean you have no speakers connected ? Or you're deaf like me)

If YAM has a decent enough ARexx port it shouldn't be too hard to run a script when you receive mail to get the sender's email address, use a cross-reference table (probably a simple text file) with people's email addresses and a picture to look up the right image, then launch an external file viewer to show that image.

DIY and the sense of acheivement - Yes Amiga makes it possible! :-D

@ seer
But how do you mean "no sound" ?
-------------

In this case, the machine means Amithlon, with sound not working properly.

I think it is probably good enough, as it (YAM) has the ability to do this with sound.

But not being Arexx literate, I didn't want to try to reinvent the wheel.

I've never used Amithlon myself, but isn't there a patch available to remap system-friendly Paula output to AHI?

Yes there is, but I was unable to get my SB Live to work properly with it.

I was able to use AC97 motherboard sound to some extent, but not well. This also required resetting bios each time I wanted to use the machine as a PC + SB Live.

I'd Swear Paula is 14 bit...

With some tricks and a little help from the CPU... yes..

Yeah, you can get YAM to do pretty much anything on any event. There's an "ARexx" page in the config section, and from there you can run any ARexx or AmigaDOS script for most events, but in the Notification section of the New Mail preferences page,  you'll see an Execute Command option. Use this to run a picture viewer to show your picture. Even Multiview will do it, e.g. put Multiview WINDOW MyMailPic.iff in the box and see how you get on  :-)

Hmmm... Should learn to read posts better when I'm tired... Hehe, to show a pic from the gallery you'll have to be a little creative with ARexx, or write a command for AmigaDOS to do a similar function. The ARexx port is capable of searching the address book and gathering information regarding the picture associated with the mailer. This could then be displayed by multiview or whatever. It may be a slow process though if you have a very large address book and/or slow disk access...
