Title: Where to buy Joysticks?
Post by: biggun on July 30, 2013, 07:36:14 AM
Is there still a source where someone can buy Joysticks with ATARI/AMIGA D9 connector?

Not used ones from Ebay but new ones I'm looking for.

Any idea?

As far as I know neither amigakit or vesalia has any, if you are no stranger to soldering you can get pretty much any joystick you can find working on Amiga, it's quite easy to get hands on genesis/megadrive joysticks for low prices and they are easy to modify tho they are a lot bigger then the miggy joysticks (http://www.rock30games.com/ItemImages/Large/312000714.jpg)

If you can get/build a housing there are quite easy to build and use arcade joystick parts and ebay is full of buttons and sticks.

The Competition Pro USB joysticks are new and you can open em up and solder wires manually to use it for Amiga.

Other then soldering and building I don't know of any new sources. but the genesis/megadrive joysticks are easiest to get running and easy to get hold of.

Whoa, hallo Gunnar, nice to see you again :)

Another possibility would be to get a hold of Playstation to DB9 converter, and then you can have truly new joypads. And quality ones too.

But, if you really need native Amiga DB9 joysticks (for testing purposes or something) you can still check Ebay. New (unused)joysticks pop up from time to time, although at a higher price. Also there are (near) mint pieces. So...

Tschüss !

Ja, as som99 said, you can buy them from Kipper2k. He is a terrific guy, and his products are of top Qualität. I have several trinkets that I bought from him :)

I recently bought 2 Fighter Sticks MD6 for Sega, new unused in the Netherlands. What modifications are needed for them to work correctly on Amiga ?

Swap pin 7 and 5 and put a 470ohm resistor between them, the Amiga gamepad has the +5v on pin 7 and Genesis/Mega drive has it on pin 5. I recommend you to buy 2x dsub 9pin connectors (one male one female) and do the mod on a cable between them, then you can use any Genesis/Mega Drive controller without modding all of em with that cable.

Thank you for the fast reply. I have tried the stick without modifications and they seem to work with just one problem. The 2nd button doesnt seem to work always. Sometimes it does. For the rest all works ok.

Was a bit dissapointed in them, i was thinking they are with microswitches but they are not.

Why is 470 ohm resistor necessary ?

Your welcome, without switching the pins you could blow your CIA chips and your right audio channel wont work anymore, so better safe then sorry.

As said a simple cable doing it is the easiest way and you will get more buttons working and still be able to use the controller on a genesis/MD system.

In regards to Megadrive controllers, is it just the 2 buttons that'll work with the simple mod people have mentioned here, or is it possible to mod as a pad for a cd32?

Im not 100% sure if I remember correctly but the resistor is needed on 6 button controllers (and some autofire ones) with the multiplexer chip is to function correctly and the resistor is for safety, and by doing this you can use more buttons with software that supports it (slim selection of software that supports this).

I dont think you need the +5v at original pin 5 wire at all on 3 button gamepads, but havent fiddled with em for a while so im not 100% sure.

There are much more qualified persons here on A.org who probably can answer this better then me :)

I have never owned a CD32 but the outputs are not the same, I guess you could program a PIC adapter to get the outputs to work for CD32, no idea if anyone made this or are selling this tho :/ but if you could get your hands on a CD 32 IC and wire it correctly inside the MD gamepad I see no reason why it would not work.

Hmm, I only have 3-butonners, but I'm going to finish my 5-to-7-cross adapter anyway.
Still, it would be nice if someone could explain a bit more about the 470 ohm resistor.

New, old-stock joysticks are available from Jim Scabery, the last Commodore/Amiga dealer of Portland, Oregon.  We were selling some of his joysticks at this year's CommVEx for $8 each.
