Title: all not lost for Aladdin4D
Post by: rednova on July 22, 2013, 08:21:45 PM
Dear Friends:

I love aladdin 4d, and I am very sad with the current developments.
But I have an idea !!!
The aladdin version 5.0 for amiga is still good and can still be sold to raise
enough money to pay someone else to code/upgrade new amiga aladdin.
And the aladdin 4d cd version, can still work super in amiga forever.
Both versions of aladdin is still good and still work.
Maybe with some good marketing, can aladdin 4d still stay on sale
to raise money for the next version ?
Good luck aladdin 4d !!!

Dear Amigans:
In order to help aladdin 4d start selling again, I have an idea.
I will try to become more productive using aladdin 4d, to release
new objects and drawings every week, to share with the aladdin
community.
I ask that all people that still use aladdin 4d, join me in creating
new scenes and objects for aladdin 4d.
Together...we can bring aladdin 4d back !!!

Hi rednova! Thanx for your belief in Aladdin4D. I'm looking for an A4D fan and hobbyist to write a companion tutorial book on Aladdin4D. Is this something you would be interested in?

Dear Amigans:

I have good news !!!
I have been studying lightwave 3d for a few years and I have
a zilllion tutorials for lightwave 3d.
I can take every tutorial and 'adapt' it for use on aladdin 4d.
I can pick all lightwave tutorials and re-release in a way
that we can make them work on aladdin.
I am not gonna use the same old tutorial...but rewrite them
in a different way that it would be different from the original
but enough to learn new techniques for aladdin 4d.

Cheers !!!

Dear Amigo:

This is the link to my webpage

https://sites.google.com/site/rednova3d/

Go to the 'gallery', the first 3 pics on the right were done in aladdin 4d.
The rest was done in lightwave 3d, including the mech on main page.
I hope you like my work.
I am just a hobbyist, but I do love both aladdin 4d and lightwave 3d.
Cheers !!!

as a former lightwave user i have good news for you.

until recent versions that got too complicated to set up because of legacy balast lightwave of amiga era is almost self explanatory. the functionality is at hand and it is intuitive. the single thing i have never figured out myself and yet have not figured out following tfm was the bones, or rather bones joints. in particular (re)activating the bones is never explained, except the manual. then the voxels, gee is it clumsy. almost like blender..

any way the web is carrying multitude of tutorials, if this helps you depends on you alone.

Dont get me wrong but you need to practice more :). I was a LW user for many years back in the day when i was on amiga dayly. The main problem for me back then where effects like smoke and fire and ofcourse rendering times even on 060@66.

You need to pay more attention to textures, lightning and add more details to your objects. Also turning on antialiasing wont hurt :). Of course it will add to your rendering time, that shouldnt be a problem for single frames, rendering animations with motion blur and antialiasing is a struggle.

In the 90's I made alot using Imagine, if I still have it, I don't mind sharing.

Hi:
for the guy who asked for the zillion lightwave tutorials:
All the tutorials I have (are not written by me)are from lightwave
books and magazines, there is no link nor webpage with them -sorry-.
I just study these books and mags.
@djole:
I appreciate your tips. Maybe you would join is to bring new life
to aladdin 4d ? You could always limit your help to critique all of
our (a4d users) 3d work for amiga...
Cheers !!!

Sadly I lost all of my rendered 3d work on amiga due a broken hd. I might have the objects folder somewhere i will try to find the backup cds if they work.

I never liked cinema 4d much, LW just ruled all 3d apps on amiga. I might install some apps soon just for fun if they run with just 4mb fast.

I never did much in Lightwave-ridiculously expensive. Also it ran on interlaced screen.

And Imagine with its numerous editors so only a curiosity. And renders were lower quality than the other packages.  I actually have the PC version of it and its manual somewhere as well.

Cinema 4D was my favourite-Amiga style guide compliant, modelling and editing on one editor, very nice material editor, RTG, simple animation controls, special effects. But no cubic mapping! And it was fast.

The last Amiga version was 4,  but PC Format gave away Version 5 for the PC, which had an interface almost identical to Amiga version, but also proper cubic mapping, wireframe animation preview, better lighting, faster renders.  All the things I wished for in the Amiga version. I still play with this, even though i have version 10 ( getting too complex for a hobbyist)

If i had to say, I think Real 3D had the most sophisticated features.  Pity about the interface.

Nonsense :p Hobbyists on the peecee even use Blender, not a program that's known for being easy to use :p

Well may be "casual user" was a better term.

The only difference between some of those "hobbyists" and pro's is they don't get paid-I'm sure they spend a lot of time producing some of the work which I admit can be stunning.

I fired up LW 4 on amiga again. Couldn't find version 5. The plan was to make a simple quick scene in 10 minutes. But i forgot how slow things are on 030 :) Eventually i spent hours making this from scratch. Its nothing special and ugly but it could inspire others to make better stuff. Lw was a true amga diamond :)

Aladdin 4D sold 18,000 units before DiscreetFX took it over so hopefully some of those ex-users come out of the woodwork. Amazing Computing ran tutorials on A4D for many issues in the late 1990s.

Well, I've just recently learned how to do 3D modelling (using Aladdin4d as my learning software) and I've been doing some models for a small video project:

http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=64435

All the objects in these scenes are custom made. I don't use pre-made objects. Not that they're amazing, but I think they're decent.

I have seen that thread and i like what you have done. It looks good, nice work, i bet it took forever to model and render. Its very fun to make something from scratch and not just load some ready objects and slap a scene together. The more you practice the more objects you end up with. After some time you have your own object collection. Amiga 3d sw will never again be competitive with pc sw but its still fun to learn the basics of 3d modeling and animation.

Thanks,

It didn't take too long to do the single frame test renders, but once I texture the moonbase, add light sources and shadows, and then render it to a 160 frame animation at HD TV resolution, I think it's going to take quite a while!

Tutorials would be great.. I have the program but have yet to dive in.. and watching/reading a step by step tutorial making a simple object from scratch
would be very helpful indeed.

These two videos can help you learn Aladdin4D. They are very rough/retro and show the old interface of Aladdin4D not the more modern intuitive one. Still the information provided in about 3 hours of instruction is very helpful.
