amiga amp cannot play mp3s on a 030 ..i tried an tried ..then i saw somewhere on here someone had converted the files into some format ..
couldnt remember what though ..so i tried some wav files an it works..
so after converting a few songs into wav files i tried an success..only 8 bit so far ..havent tried 16 bit yet ..but quality is not bad ..an ill admit the amiga cant do much else while its playing ..but im happy..!!
if a mas player turns up on ebay im still interested though :>

I think it can if you make quality bad enough, but it's an another matter if it's sensible anymore. Wav files take lots of storage space, but if you have it enough why not. Good compromize could be using mp2 format, which isn't as heavy as mp3, but compresses still quite well.

follow up ..16bit wavs in full stereo sounds as good as mp3 ..i have a good amp on my amiga ..u need to fiddle with settings buffer etc..an the wave files are big ..but burnt on a cd just playing from there ..fantastic..will do till a mas player comes ..or id say if you have a 060 you could prob use your amiga an play music too..
happy !!!

Recommend the MAS Player, if your handy you can make it internal.
The MAS Player will decode to free up the cpu for multitasking.
An 060/040 never hurt, but cost a bit more than the MAS Player.
Good luck...
Another long term idea you may want to consider is a big box Amiga. If you don't mind spending more money on classic hardware, they offer more options and performance as you expand.

Actually WAV's are better quality than MP3's :)
My 060 is powerful enough to make a decent stab at playing MP3's by I still prefer use WAV files with mine.

And this is ugly or what? http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1078

My 50MHz '030 manages 1/4 bitrate mono. It's ok for background music but it won't win any fidelity awards.
I wonder how flac / ogg compares in terms of CPU required. I see flac is available for the classics.

I really suggest you to try a MAS-Player as it doesn't only play MP3 easily and very nicely but also streaming radio as well.
You can check a test video I made some time ago here:

I've played mp3s on my 54 MHz A2630 with good results (Stereo + Paula14C) using mpega.library but subject to the following limitations:
- Use Integer 020/030 version of mpega.library
- Use 1/2 playback rate (22 KHz)
- Play from the shell (GUIs waste CPU time and won't allow the large buffer size needed)
- Set buffer size to at least 75% of the mp3 and WAIT before playback begins

what
Definitely not ugly.
Love the look and performance of my MAS Player.... ;-)

Yes, definitely if you want to play streams on your Amiga or Mp3's, and what's more, doing other things while playing, a Mas player is a must. Grab one while you can, from AmigaKit.
What I do when I don't use the Mas is to convert the songs to aiff, then you can use Amplifier to listen them right. I use Aiff MP3 Converter (http://free-aiff-mp3-converter.en.softonic.com/) on my Pc, and you can convert them in a batch with a click very fast.

Try "Prayer2.0" instead; is good enough on 030

62eur a mas player...

62eur a mas player...
Remember the Mas is an "external" player, it won't grab almost any Cpu use from your miggy. You can run it with a 020, play a Game... while playing some music or listening the radio/stream from the Mas at the same time... Do you think it's expensive, mate?
-
16 bit WAVS using Hippo Player and internal 14 bit routines with calibration are good, especially if you're using double scan screen modes (playback rate doubles to max 56khz).

yes... by the way if i turn on the amiga isnt for listen mp3, wav, flac or whatever... i can imagine playing turrican and listening mp3 at the same time, sacrilege!

Of course they are! But then it sounds like he is converting MP3 to WAV, and you'd lose the quality, since usually you take WAV -> MP3 (quality loss) and then -> WAV would mean you have the large file size, but compression 'artifacts', lowering the quality.
FLAC is supposed to be a lossless codec, but I'm not sure how much extra CPU is required. Same with Ogg. Personally, I put in that old fashioned shiny disc thing and listen that way, if I want to hear Music from the Amiga that isn't the awesome Mods. :D
Now if only we could slap a DSP in the Amiga. That's one thing Atari did right with the Falcon, and why it can play MP3s by default (at least from what I've read, I don't have a Falcon, but wouldn't mind one... anyone want to donate? :D )

I use a really good program on the PC called 'Exact Audio Copy' to rip my CD's straight to WAV files, that's the best way to play music on a real Amiga. I use AMP and have set to use AHI Paula 14bit Hi-fi and used a utility to remove most of the 'noise' from Paula's output.

Nice! I just use Linux, the file manager sees audio tracks as Wav and I just copy paste. Well if I used wav files like that. I know KDE has it built in so that you can drag/drop the audio files from the file manager and it'll auto-convert them to whatever you want. Kind of a cool feature.
WAV files are huge though, would be nice if there were a 68k friendly lossless compression for audio. Maybe I'll do some digging.

Even old Amiga can do that, some CD filesystems support it.
There's no need to rip CD:s under other OS if you have CD drive on your Amiga. Besides that filesystem level way, there are lots of rippers and encoders available from dedicated programs to burninng apps like MakeCD, which can do it.
