Hi,
What are some of your pet hates about AmigaOS, Amiga games, AROS, WinUAE etc?
Leave out anything that is likely to cause blue vs red battles plz. :madashell:
My first one: The A1200 is nice and sleek, but it is also flimsy and can break.
-
AmigaOS's terrible desktop and GUI system. This needs replacing badly, as in something new made from scratch that's incompatible with existing software. The problem is of course having to write new software, too :( It could've been so nice :( Still interesting as an experiment to see how good it can really be :)

Fishing for negatives. :p Life is too short!
-
x86 supremacists.
-
Why don't you just admit that PowerPC really isn't that good?
There are awesome (or lousy) CPU's under any architecture. PowerPC has plenty of negatives. ARM is powerful, but it might chop out things you would find in a desktop CPU.
68k died a premature death.
btw. How good was the PA-RISC which Commodore would have adopted?
-
My PET hates? Those tiny green monitors.

Because, personally, I find that my 1GHz G4 is actually quite usable for most tasks up to and including modest web-browsing, and actually better at them than a higher-clocked x86 contemporary?

There are indeed - which is exactly why I find x86 supremacists to be so aggravating.
68k died a premature death.
That it did... :(

Good question. Guess we'll never know, since PA-RISC was one of many architectures that got the shaft when everybody decided Itanium was The Future Of All Computing and it never made it past 1.1GHz, but considering that HP still sold them (even while pushing their Itanium line) through 2008, it can't have been that bad.

No. 2 (More of a gripe though)
The Amiga 500 could look ridiculous with external expansions hanging off it.
No. 3. Back in the day you would have been el supremo having the giant Amiga 3000 tower. Nowadays nobody would want a 20kg monster as a computer.

Thats why we use the a1200.

I would...

I have 3 main pet peeves right now
1. Fanboy users who have no clue about really goes on behind the scenes or in the Amiga past but yet post definitively about it.
2. Amiga HOARDERS guys who have 5x this amiga 8x this amiga.. that crap. They have all those classic amigas armed to the teeth and DONT EVEN USE THEM. Just brag on forums and sigs.. beyond lame
3. AMIBAY: run by a bunch of ego maniacs that must have very little personal power in real life.
-
I second that.
Amibay sux the big one.
-
The user base? Haha, just kidding, although +1 to Magnetic's comment about hoarders above. ;)
And hey, I love the look of an A500 with the GVP sidecar hanging off it's side, it's the only one that was designed with any sort of style, and was my dream system back in the day and I'm thrilled to own one today (and use it nearly every day).
Another complaint? Lack of user's groups, or any sort of "AmiWest" style gathering anywhere near the Washington, DC, area. :p
Also I hate that I need to edit my posts 20 times to find the right combination of characters to make emoticons here on amiga.org. Why when I click "go advanced" doesn't it give me a chart showing what all the emoticons are, and allowing me to easily click them to add to posts? Ugh! :(
-
The user base?
Heheh +1 for this :-)

I have to agree with the comment about the Hoarders. They're the ones that really cause the prices of the hardware to sky rocket like they have! For the price of an 060 accelerator I could have upgraded my PC to a 16 core processor and quadrupled the ram.
But it's not as FUN!
I'd have to say my biggest annoyance is the design of the A4000D's case. Specifically the front plastic piece that makes it a pain anytime you need to really get in there!
I think it'd be nice if we could either get someone with a 3D printer or access to some CNC machines to start building either new case designs for classic Amiga hardware, or at least replacement parts...

Hoarders or collectors tend to push me over the edge. In general, the hobbyist tends to be practical in terms of what he or she will pay for Amiga equipment, understanding that extortion-level money would be better spent on practical hardware than Amiga kit. Collectors, however, will often pay stupid amounts of money for shyt they will never use. I have in the past refused to sell my Amiga items to buyers who are obviously not users -- I would much rather have my cherished items provide joy in a good home.

Or Atlanta area. Hell, I'd even roam up to Knoxville or Charlotte.

Oh boy, where do I start.
Commodore's poor code documentation and source control.
The closed mentality of every Amiga owner. I'm not talking about opening up the source, they've always played it extremely close to their chests.
Positioning of the joystick ports, should have been on the side, like the CD32.
Non-upgradeable chip memory. Providing a socket for the chip RAM to go from 2MB to 8MB, or even 4MB would have made a world of difference.
The omission of a pre-amp with volume control and 3.5mm headphone port.
The Akiko chip debacle. And what kind of name is Akiko? It's so not aligned to the custom ship naming convention.
Naming the computers with numbers.
Single IDE header in A1200.

No complaints really.
Amiga OS is classic, and is what it is. Is what I loved. Could have been developed further, but lost out to a sad fate. I know there is OS 4, but I've not played with it yet. No need to, all my classic stuff works great on my 80Mhz 060. So I guess there my only complaint is that it died and no new hardware or 68k development on the OS is going to happen.
MorphOS. I love it. No major complaints at all here.
AROS. With the right hardware, it's pretty cool considering it's free. I've a ton I could complain about it, but again, considering it's free and does what it can do as well as it does. I'm pretty impressed.
Looking forward to the Opus Magellan sources coming to fruitation on these OS's. Will be neat to see where it can carry things.

No. 4, 5 and so on...
lol, I remember how people use to complain that the keyboard didn't F11 and F12.
Also the diskdoctor option which couldn't actually salvage a corrupted disk.
There were a couple of games that could use paddles, but why bother?
The price of RAM back in those days $$$!
-
Love the design of the A3000... hate the design of the A3000... end up getting cut, scraped or something every time she is apart
-
That all time classic phrase ... "two more weeks"
-
Oh wait, I do have a complaint.
The 2Mb GFX RAM limit really sucks! :)
-
Fleecy & McBill still owe me a shirt & $50 coupon! :p If I ever see those bastards they're going down, just out of principle.
And speaking of "pet hates", I hate when people bring their dogs to the supermarket and leave them locked in a hot car in 100+ degree weather. What's the matter with you? Leave Fido at home, unless you like when I break your window out! :(
-

No kidding - especially with how crappy a lot of Atari-compatible joysticks are. I hacked a NES controller for MSX compatibility and that did wonders to improve control on non-keyboard games; the pinouts aren't arranged identically, but it should be possible to do the same for the Amiga...
-

The Suzo Arcade joystick was very good.

Oh ya, another complaint...
Lack of multi button support in some games that force you to reach out an push the stupid space bar instead of using a second or 3rd button on a joypad. ANNOYING!!
I.E. I love the game Myth, but hate the control scheme.
-
I hate the shady practices that both Amiga Inc and Hyperion have engaged in over the years.
I also despise the self-appointed "Copyright Mafia" that get their knickers in a twist about people "pirating" decades old ROMs, ADFs and ISOs of Amiga software.

Hi,
Not only do I take my dog to the supermarket and leave him in the car, I also close the windows, after an hour the poor little sucker is really happy to see me, it also teaches him not to bite me.
Nah I wouldn't do that, after all he has a pancake on his head.

Hi,
One of my real Amiga pet hates is when we are talking about Amiga related pet hates someone always has to bring up the fake Amiga related things like MorphOS and AROS.

I'll bite. ;)
If software that runs on Amigas isn't Amiga related then what is?

Another great thing to do, especially with cats, is to starve them for a few days. That teaches them the priority of behaving for and loving their master. ;)
