Title: CFIDE68K with real IDE HD
Post by: curtis on June 27, 2013, 10:34:30 PM
Has anyone successfully used the CFIDE68K with a real IDE hard drive?

I've tried several models on rev 5 and 6a boards and nothing seems to work.  Used KS 1.3, 2.05 and 3.1 all to no avail.

Contacted mkl on amibay and he doesn't understand why it would not work either!

What are the size of the HDD(s) you have tested with?

I have ordered an IDE68k but haven't received it yet. Will try it with a CF card. What I have read on forums is that you should avoid using disks larger that 4GB because they might not be detected. I don't have personal experience with this.

I've tried just about everything from a 52Mb on up to a 2G.

Several brands, Seagate, Toshiba, WD, etc.

What about power? A HDD draws quite a lot of current while spinning up. Could be worth to investigate. If the voltages are alright, at least you have found what the problem is not. Measure the +5 and the +12 voltage at the HDD power pins and see what you have.

mr knight probably has the right approach. between the adaptor and the hdd it might need more power.

I have the very first rev IDE68K and it works with all of my laptop 2.5 inch drives that work on an 1200. I never tried a 3.5 inch HD so I can't help with those.

I had my 500+ working with a 1GB IBM 2.5" drive but it required external power from the floppy header.

I used external power for the drive also.

I'm using a bigfoot power supply for the A500 and for the drive also so power shouldn't be an issue.

It's interesting that others can get this to work but I'm having absolutely no luck!

Now I'm beginning to wonder what I'm doing wrong!

Hello Curtis. I've ordered an ide68k too with intention of connection a 2.5" HDD to my A500. I've just read on amibay that mkl has found someone who's having problems with real hard drives and he suspects a bug and hence he's holding off further shipments for time being - I suppose that must be you he's referring to? I hope he can fix it... I can attach a CF card if push comes to shove, but I really wanted a real HDD instead.

Yeah, that would probably be me.

Sorry to disrupt everybody's orders.

CF cards work perfectly, but seems sometimes the real IDE drives don't.

Not sure why it would be that way, but there it is.

I'm personally interested in this case since I was the last, or second lats to order an IDE68K from mkl. I suspect my board is on hold until this issue is solved.

Can you provide a photo of the setup? Maybefrom different angles. Always good to see what you are dealing with. And maybe of the PSU as well? I've never heard of these bigfoot ones and I'd like to know the specs.

Noticed on amibay mkl has found the problem and provided the code to fix the problem.  Now just need to get my units over to him.
