I've got an Amiga Technologies A1200 that was sold to me as non working.
Well I stuck a WB disk in there and tried to boot it up and it wouldn't boot, so I tried another disk, wouldn't boot.
So I prised apart a shabby external DD drive I have and took out the Sony drive in there with a view to replacing it in the A1200.
Now, the drive I took out is a standard HD drive modified to read Amiga DD disks AFAIK. And this 'hack' is part of the unit. So in theory I should be able to put this new drive in. ...
But when I do, still nothing.
Any ideas?
lol @ floppy troubles :-o

Did you remember to change jumpers on external one you put inside?
-
Ah. no I didn't, thanks for that.
I changed the jumper from 1 to 0 made sure all the connectors were snug. But still, nothing.....
:-?
-
Tried jumper setting at 1 too
The drive gets power ok, the LED comes on both on the drive and on the cluster, but that's it, it just seizes

Was there a little PCB connected to the floppy drive when it was in the external drive?
I suspect there was and this would be needed to make the drive work in your Amiga.
Was it an Amitek drive by any chance?
There are details of the HD floppy hack on Aminet, somewhere.
Good luck

Of course! I just assumed it was a pin adaptor, but you're right. I just guessed the Sony drive in there was the same as the amiga ones that were used.
In which case, how come I have read on the internet that this swap (external amiga drivev -> internal) is possible?
How in the hell am I going to get a replacement? :-(

Some older external floppy drives where directly compatible with the Amiga, most notably the Chinon drives as fitted internally.
You can boot an amiga from the External drive.
These 2 retailers are advertising 2nd user A600 drives which should fit:
16/32 systems (http://www.1632-sales.zenwebhosting.com/acatalog/) & so does Amiga deals (http://www.amigadeals.fsnet.co.uk/adparts.htm)
If you are handy with a soldering iron, you could adapt the external floppy connector to an internal one.
Have fun.

the thing is those drives are always so expensive when I could probably get a whole amiga 1200 for that second hand...
anyway, thanks for your help
