I have an A3000d with scsi hard drive on it that was working fine when I got it. The computer was just so full of crap that I had no space at all so I decided to reformat it. It has roms with 40.68 on it so I assume kickstart 3.1 roms (so no KS partition needed on HD right ?)
I have all the workbench 3.1 disks and let it go through the default install, when it asks to reboot it does so into AmigaOS instead of the WB and gives me:
C:Version failed returncode 20
If anyone knows how to fix this, please post it in "simple" steps as I am a super Amiga noob (not PC just Amiga).

Edit your startup-sequence with:
ed s:startup-sequence
Then remove the >NIL: part of the line with C:Version. Save it and reboot.
It should spit out a more descriptive error message so we can diagnose the cause of this problem more easily.

Okay after the All rights reserved bit it says:
Kickstart 40.68, could not find version information for ''
then the line after that is the returncode 20 line

hmmm... Very strange indeed.
Where did you get the 3.1 disks from? Are they from the original floppy pack or made from ADF's off the net?
-
I made them from tosec I had as some of the originals are damaged, I was wondering if that is the prob.

I suppose it's possible.
I could archive up a working A3000 OS3.9 install for you if you like. You'd have to figure out some way to transfer it your SCSI HD though.
Perhaps you could put it in a PC and use UAE to do it if you have a PCI SCSI card. The adaptec ones go for about $10 on ebay.

I have SCSI 2 controllers you could probably use for the price of shipping.
nicholas, could you make a similar archive for an A2000?

Yeah, I don't see why not. :)

sorry guys, no pci slots on my pc, just pcie, (maximus v formula) hooking up my 1200 to see if I can crossdos something, but it hates floppies, will keep you guys posted.

Can you boot from floppy? Can you partition and format the hard drive?
If so, you should be able to copy the system manually to the partition you wish to boot from.
I understand that you ultimately want a clean and complete 3.1 install as a foundation to a new system.
-
If you run setpatch while in "Amiga OS" does that work? If you run version again will it give you the same error?
You have the option to select the 3.1 kickstart? Did your previous install use softkick?
-
Just thought I'd update you guys.
It was my install disks, they were crap ! I fixed my 1200 by removing the crappy, moded panasonic drive and putting in a real C= unit. That was a pain as the MB wasn't modded, but I had to (needlessly) check anyway to find out. With a good drive in it I CrossDos'ed a whole new set. Took FOREVER, but am up and running'.
Thank you guys for all your help !
Me fighting crappy disks ==> :swords:
my opinion of Escom PC drives ==> :hammer:

Of course I could boot :D my install disk was in great shape :D it was some other disk in the chain that must've been corrupt but not enough for the install to notice.
Running clean 3.1 now !

@diretorn
As I understand it I do not have that option as the machine came with 3.xx roms plugged in.

Glad its working. Keep us posted on your next moves. It will be fun to see where you go from here.

Trying to get picasso to work with spectrum, what a pain in the A..

Glad it's working now.
You might want to give BetterWB a try now you've got 3.1 installed.

+1
Better to do it before you make changes or additions to 3.1.

Just a little tip to thread starter who don't have any extra PCI expansions.
These PCI-E 1x (as you know it will work in any PCI-E slot including 16x) to dual PCI's are great, tho I recommend you to get a pair of flexible PCI risers also depending on case :)

Yeah, that'd make winuae my friend, just setup scsi hard drive controller via usb and fix in winuae. I was wishing I had had one last weekend.

Hi,
Looks like you have two different versions on your OS, when this happens like say you have version 3.0 and then put on version 3.1 it will come up with that error. Check your rom version, and then check and make sure that you didn't try to make up a disk for your OS because the one disk had a disk error, so you tried a disk from a different OS.
Don't know if I am clear on this description. but, sometimes when you are playing with disks, you put two different versions trying to salvage one version, well it just don't work.

I may do the betterWB, but I want to experience the C= os warts and all for a bit to get a feel for the baseline user exp. Like following the recipe a time or two before tweaking it. Never used an amiga, so don't know what gripes to have yet. Other than Picasso96 seems to be a p.i.t.a. to get configured...prob just "noobness"..lol.

Try using this if you are still having trouble configuring P96:

Also the latest P96 with bug fixes and slightly better performance can be found here:
