Hi,
What do you guys think is the best OS for an Amiga 1200?
I have an Blizzard 030 @ 50mhz and 32mb on board and a 4gb CF card.
I'll be wanting to run WHDLoad and will want it to look as cool as possible.
I've got a Wifi Easynet PCMCIA card too so I want to be able to install drivers and get online
-
3.9. If you didn't care about going online 3.1 would suffice.
-
I hear 3.9 has TCP/IP, I want to wirelessly connect to my Router and transfer files between PC UAE and my Amiga, would 3.9 help with this?

As Mike mentioned above, 3.9 if you want to go online.

Ummm i dont know why you guys are saying this. 3.1 goes online just as easy as 3.9. The ONLY thing diff is that 3.9 comes with Genesis stack built in. For 3.1 you can use Termite, Roadshow, Miami, etc etc
-
He also said he wants it to "look cool". Obviously that's subjective, but IMHO 3.9 looks better than 3.1 (unless patched all to heck). ;)
-
I'd like to get my 3.0 online.... is it just more difficult on an older OS or a total non-starter for some reason?
-
Not terrifically difficult to get a 3.0/3.1 machine online, but you will obviously need to install and config a TCP stack yourself with that.
3.9 has the benefit of already having that done for you, but I always found 3.9 bloated and sluggish for my tastes even on my old PPC/040 A1200/BVision machine, but I'm a bit picky to be entirely honest.
3.9 is more certainly a more modern and feature rich OS out of the box, though, that's for certain.

I've got the stack, miami i think? I haven't configured it properly yet though (using wired ethernet pcmcia card) Whats a good browser for a modestly expanded (ACA1232) 1200?
-
coolhand
Ibrowse 2.x is currently best browser for you probably...
Amiga os 3.0/3.1 can easily be made to go online with any amiga tcp stack.
If you want your 3.0/3.1 a1200 to "look cool" i highly recommend Classic Wb and if you
have an 030 or higher Amikit for real amiga: retro's project

I have a 50MHz 68030 and 16Mb RAM. I'm currently using the free AmiTCP (4?) demo but will probably upgrade to Roadshow. I'm using OS3.1 and iBrowse plus the bundled AmiTCP telnet and ftp clients. I've not played with Samba (for windows shares), not yet found a working ssh client and the VNC client that works for everyone else refuses to work for me.
I'd have thought 3.1 would be faster than 3.9...

i'd also go with 3.1 and not 3.9 because 3.1 was the last real Commodore OS and has less bloat.

Everybody always says that and its not that much of a diff, especially with an 030 amiga.. so not really a consideration. There are alot of good patches in 3.9 from 3.1.

the VNC client that works for everyone else refuses to work for me.
Have you tried this?

@ Magnetic, oh. would IE not run well on it?
thanks for the tip! Maybe i'll give it another go later. I've been slowly building my own 'classic wb' from scratch over the last 12 months - lots of hard work researching, downloading trying stuff out and configuring/breaking everything and I'd hate to abandon it at this point:)
@OP, if you go for the older version, you can make 3.0/3.1 look far more modern/cooler with scalos, though i'm sure it must bring a bit of a performance hit. I think i messed up the install (don't ask) and ditched it fairly quickly - just didn't work right, really looked nice though.
tbh I like the newer styles but think the older look works better on an old CRT tv, which is what i'm using but these things all come down to personal taste of course.

I think it's time to pimp my old 3.9 thread -> 3.9 setup thread (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=50414)

Actually, 3.1 was published by Village Tronic, not Commodore. So 3.0 would be the last "real" Commodore OS.
As for bloat, OS3.9 is obviously larger than older versions, but far from bloated. OS3.0 is bloated compared to eg. OS1.2, so by that logic OS1.2 or some similar vintage would be best.

I still think on an A1200, 3.1 plus 8-color Magic WB and Magic Menu ToolManager Dock MUI capture the Amiga Look and Feel better than anything else.
Plus its fast, uses little precious chip ram, icons actually look like what they're supposed to represent, the "3D" look is consistent from the icons to the menu's to the docks.
It takes a fair bit of effort to get it going though, but thats part of the fun.
If you can''t be bothered than Classic Workbench.
-
3.9 with some little updates can look pretty good and even run pretty fast with AGA.

@OP
You might find this post useful for setting up a 3.1 install.

Just use the driver for your wireless card instead of cnet.device.

I downloaded Classic Workbench a few months ago. As I recall it was over 200 megabytes so I tossed it; Now that's bloat! ;) IMHO you can achieve a much cleaner and faster system by just doing it yourself and picking & choosing which updates you want but that's pretty time consuming, just ask me when I was 19 years old and would stay up till 4am every night tweaking every setting down to the individual pixels in my icons so everything would be "just right"! ;) **grin**
