Title: I want to play CD32 games on my 1200.
Post by: sir_bacharach on June 02, 2013, 08:31:21 PM
Hello again!!

I've got a 1200 with CF drive and 030 accelerator with 32mb ram.

If I wanted to play Simon the Sorcerer or beneath a steel sky on CD32, what would I need to do it?

I have a floppy disk that came with my Amiga that I got on Ebay labelled 'CD32 Emulator'

What's next?

How do I get a CD Drive hooked up etc?

:)

Which accelerator do you have?

The Blizzard 1230 and GVP 1230 have an optional SCSI controller card. You could after adding a SCSI CD-ROM you can play CD32 games.

If you don't have these cards you could buy an IDE SPlitter to add an IDE CD-ROM or you could get a Squirrel SCSI controller. This one you could add it on the PCMCIA port.

Just use WHDLoad :-) No disks/discs needed then.

I wouldn't recommend playing either of these games on your A1200, unless the emulator also allows you to save games.

The believe the WHDload version of Beneath a Steel Sky is full talkie like the CD32, I'm not sure about Simon the Sorcerer tho.

First you need to get the CD drive situation sorted out. Then comes the software part. AsimCDFS and CacheCDFS both have CD32 emulation modes. There's also an excellent package called CDBoot that interrupts the startup-sequence to mount the CD drive and boot from that instead.

As I recall, Simon never worked well from CD on a non-CD32. Steel Sky is tricky as well, but at least that one can run with WHDLoad. Need heaps of RAM, though.

Sounds like hard work!!

I have a Blizzard 030 50mhz with 32mb onboard.

Would that be enough for emulation or whdload?

I know nothing about Amigas anymore.

Hopefully some of these games will be actual hard drive installable, so maybe I could just run them without WHDload.

:)

Ideally for the CD32 version of Beneath a Steel Sky via WHDLoad with full Pre-Load you need 64mb Ram

If you check the CD for Simon the Sorcerer it might have an executable you can run, therefore you could just copy the files to your HDD and create an assign, it works for some Amiga CD and CD32 Games :)

There's also software you can get on Aminet to mount ISO's from your CF HDD.

You should give "CD32 Install kit" from Airsoft Softwair a try.

main archive: InstallKit4_5.lha (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15842224/Amiga/InstallKit4_5.lha)
bonus archives: http://aminet.net/search?query=ikit_%2A.lha

I have a Squirrel SCSI interface with 4x CD-ROM. That came with a CD32 emulator too. I does work, but haven't used it in years!

Don't forget though that you will also need a CD32 Joypad, or the Competition Pro CD32 Joypad (much preferred so I've heard).

Or you could just use ScummVM AGA and play the 256 color PC originals on your Amiga straight from your hard disk :)

Beneath a Steel Sky is free now and can be downloaded from the ScummVM website.

Hey man? Can you port Ultima 7 to AGA or Savage Empire?

I actually like the CD32 controller and even prefer it over the Comp Pro. I never had much luck with the NTSC CD32 other than the controller :)

Use it all of the time on my A1200. If it was wireless it would be perfect.

It's funny you should say that, look what is currently open on my Desktop ;)

:D I am sooo excited! Question! One question! Does it need 64 MB of RAM to run like DOSBox, AmiQuake 2 AGA or can it be OK on 32 MB of RAM?

Way too early to tell, I'm not even sure if I can get it to run yet with AGA 68k yet.  I'm just using it to debug my AGA SDL.

I'll post a video if I ever get it running :)

NovaCoder, you are a god among men!

I did see that there is a (Really... REALLY old) version of exult for the Amiga, but it's RTG.  And the original question was Ultima 7 and Savage Empire.  Exult of course covers Ultima 7 (and unless my information is way out of date) doesn't support the Ultima 6 engine, which is what Savage Empire and Martian Dreams uses.

I recently found that someone had redone Eye of the Beholder 1 and 2 using AGA instead of ECS, and was thinking that Ultima 6 would be SO awesome (and needed) to be upgraded to AGA, and have the two 'Worlds of Ultima' games 'ported'.

Unfortunately, last I checked the Exult equivalent for Ultima 6 (Nuvie) wasn't really near being usable.

But I don't want to distract you from your awesomeness, please continue porting Exult to AGA!  Then we'll be able to at least play the Ultima 6 rebuild (using Exult) and Ultima 7!  :D
