Title: Replacing Oscillator Crystal
Post by: DiskChris on May 31, 2013, 10:31:57 PM
So the crystal on my gvp 68030 accelerator fell out, and my luck, one of the pins breaks off...So now I'm looking for a replacement on amigakit.  How do I know what DIL size to buy?  Also, do I need to get  the exact same mhz rating?  The one which I had says "DOC-70 28.322 MHZ KDS-9M".   Would this (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=597) work?

Take a centimeter graded ruler and place next to your missing crystal socket, then take a photo. Repeat for the crystal itself. Then the answer will by much easier.

8 pin DIL will be square while 14 pin will be rectangular.  It will probably be the 14 PIN you want.  If 28MHz was the speed of the original that one will be fine.

Aren't 2 (opposite) pins of oscillators unused (if I recall correctly)? If an unused pin broke off then it might still work if inserted in the correct orientation. Three legs aren't much support though.

As I recall the out-of-the-capsule oscillators, the variant where you just plug it in essentially. You have:
 * GND
 * +5V
 * Signal
 * NC

You can manage without NC with less mechanical stability. But if any other connection is compromised it's broken. Unless you manage to solder some extra wire directly to the broken pin (messy).

Also, do I need to get  the exact same mhz rating?

I would strongly recommend you to get the same freqency on the new oscillator, just in case.

Wow, that's pretty crazy expensive... I paid like $1.20 for mine :hammer:

I'm in Australia, so probably doesn't help you much:
