Hi All,
I've ordered a 4Gb CF card plus adapter to replace the failing HD in my A1200.
When I previously installed 3.1 I remember a number of problems such as:-
1) Trying several datatypes before finding ones which worked (jpeg, png etc)
2) The need to upgrade the 'Installer' to something more modern
3) The need for (or at least advantage to have) fblit, ftext and possibly SystemPatch?
4) Issues installing AHI (probably a list of dependencies?)
5) Problems with AmiTCP 4 installer failing
6) NewIcons(?) vs GlowIcons (?)
Can anyone recommend an install order and/or list of recommended patches, datatypes and software to get 3.1 into a usable (by modern standards) state?
I'll probably soon buy Roadshow and an Indivision AGA but for now I'd like to get the basic system running.
I have a 50MHz 68030 (no FPU), 16Mb RAM and a PCMCIA network card. Standard 3.1 is fine with me - I don't require fancy launchers/docks etc; my main priority is a fast stable Workbench :)
The other alternative is a customised image (for example as provided by Cammy or ClassicWB?) but I'm thinking I may be better off with a basic install from scratch...
Thanks,
Steve

Backup your existing HD to the CF card. No need to reinstall.

Hi Thomas,
My current install is littered with failed software packages/datatypes. I probably could tidy it up but it seems logical to do a clean install using software/datatypes which are known to be good.
When searching for a datatype it did seem to be a process of trying several from aminet until finding one which worked. Is this what others do or is there a list of recommended software somewhere?

My advice is to Save yourself the trouble of getting all the datatypes, viewers, libraries, C commands, icon patches archivers, whdload etc working together
Download one of the classic workbench systems.
If you have a scan doubler than go for this one:
http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/advsp.htm
If you have a 1084 then go for this one:

Or AmigaSYS4:
http://www.amigasys.ultimateamiga.co.uk/amiga.html
I have an 030 system setup in 64 colours under this and it looks really good. AmigaSYS for Amiga has not been updated for 4 years, but I like it (with personal tweaks and upgrades).
To build an Amiga Workbench from scratch is time consuming, so choose a package such as ClassicWB or AmigaSYS and personalise it from there. That's what I'll do from now on. The easiest would be ClassicWB because it's up to date and still actively developed.

Another option for those who want their base to be as close as possible to the original but with all the updates is BetterWB. This is what I recently used to rebuild my A2500, KS3.1 machine. Here's the link:

What you describe sounds a lot like BetterWB to me. I can recommend it because I am running it on an accelerated A2000 (I haven't tried ClassicWB or AmigaSYS). BetterWB is more oriented to modernizing the libs, datatypes, etc. There is NO eye candy included. I would be tempted to start with this immediately after a clean install and before any other appearance enhancement. Find out more here: http://lilliput.amiga-projects.net/BetterWB.htm.
I've always thought the WarpDataTypes to be the fastest and most efficient.
If you're interested in some "ear candy", give this a try: http://aminet.net/package/mods/smpl/VoiceOfAmiga
EDIT: Oops, rdolores beat me to it.

Thanks for all the comments. I'll take a closer look at ClassicWB and BetterWB; both seem to have their advantages!

Off the top of my head and to be installed in this order.
http://aminet.net/disk/misc/pfs3aio.lha (Install it to the RDB with HDConfig then format your partitions as PFS3 volumes)
http://lilliput.amiga-projects.net/BetterWB.htm
http://aminet.net/util/boot/SetPatch_43.6b.lha
http://aminet.net/util/misc/Installer-43_3.lha (I can email you v44.10 if you want it)
http://www.platon42.de/files/util/TLSFMem.lha
http://aminet.net/util/libs/MMULib.lha
http://aminet.net/util/boot/CMQ030.lha
http://aminet.net/util/boot/fblit.lha
http://aminet.net/util/boot/FText.lha
http://www.grey13.com/files/fscreen021ntta.zip (Not stable on some machines)
http://www.computerdevices.it/downloads/SystemPatch33beta.lha
http://aminet.net/util/libs/IconLib_46.4.lha
http://aminet.net/driver/audio/ahiusr_4.18.lha
http://www.warpdt.co.uk
http://www.five-star.com/kens_icons/downloads/kens_icons_v2.lha (Backup before you install this as they might be too slow without an RTG card)
http://aminet.net/util/boot/CardPatch.lha
http://aminet.net/util/boot/CardReset.lha
http://aminet.net/driver/net/cnetdevice.lha
Also you'd be better off installing the demo version of Roadshow than fannying about with AmiTCP: http://www.amigafuture.de/downloads.php?view=detail&df_id=3657
http://sourceforge.net/projects/amiga-smbfs/files/amiga-smbfs/smbfs%201.74/smbfs-1.74-68k.lha/download
http://aminet.net/util/sys/AmberRAM.lha
http://aminet.net/util/shell/KingCON_1.3.lha
That should be stable and quite responsive.
Piru's Exec44 and Blizkick should also give you a nice speed boost at the cost of a one time reboot each time you cold boot.

If I think of anything else I'll come back and edit this post.

Nice list, Nicholas.
How'd I manage a double post? :0

That's weird, I usually get a message informing me that I've double posted and it then cancels the second post.
I forgot to mention installing Thor"s CPU/MMU libs., will edit the post.
