Post by: sir_bacharach on May 21, 2013, 12:25:11 PM

Thanks.
Rob.

Supposedly Analogic Computers has some and Perto himself is selling some on facebook or something...

Petro is not selling them from his Facebook page, he gives the email address (amiga1200magic@gmail.com) for putting in for one -- now all allocated.

How badly do you want one?

You want to play a game, don't you :D

Oh, if you just want to play a game then use Amiga Forever on your PC. Classic Amigas are too much of a hassle to deal with for simple game play.

^^^ Well that's a pretty negative response!  :(  Maybe he likes the feel of classic hardware?  I know I'd never want to use an emulator when I've got my A500 sitting on my desk!

Maybe if all the people hoarding like 10-20 classic Amigas would start letting them go at reasonable prices, then this guy could find one.  Oh well, pipe dream I know!  Good luck, and keep checking ebay, Amibay, etc. :)

Nostalgia really. Just been diagnosed with the big C and it makes you think about all the good times you had and the Amiga for me was one of them. I'd like the experience of opening a brand new Amiga as if I were back in the day. Sad I know... Just one of those things. I want to play loads of games on it like Frontier, SWOS, Settlers, Battle Isle, Syndicate, the list goes on. I only ever had a hand me down a500 with half meg expansion. My big bro had the 1200 which he's just gave to me but its battered and brown and held together with tape because he'd had it open loads to fit a hard drive etc. I'm pretty OCD when it comes to keeping things clean tidy and in good condition so I want a new one. :)

That's a point of view.  Here is another.  Even this web site is crawling with folks who, for various reasons, can't be trusted with the dwindling supply of classic hardware.  There are some who pitched their Amigas and now advocate emulation as a better solution.  There are the guys who have mood swings, purge their Amigas, get nostalgic after a few years and then repeat the process.  There are a few (baffling to me) that had one years ago, seem to hate it now, but log in here and advise against the platform.  We've all seem ppl threatening to "bin" their collection unless someone drives over and picks it up in some time frame.

There are still unrescued Amigas to be found from various sources, although, less than just a few years ago.  :(

It's only been 28 years since the Amiga's introduction.  How many were made and how many are left?

What will the situation look like in 10 more years?  In 20?

I don't consider myself a hoarder.  I hope I have rescued enough Amigas (some from destruction!) to preserve working examples far into the future.

@ Sir Bacharach  -  There are some very good threads here detailing ways to clean-up and preserve your hardware!  It's worth doing if it is worth owning one.

I may have a nice 1200 in the next week, if I do and I decide to sell I'll keep you in mind. I might dig the 1200 though so can't say yet.

HEHE...I know, some peoples collections are awesome. While I think we should all own a daily driver and one or 2 spares, if someone want to own 50 it's their right IMO. However it's also my opinion it sucks for those of us who want to use one and cant find them.
Title: Re: Where can I get New Old Stock Amiga 1200?

One of these days we'll all have to use emulators or hardware clones, even for our PC's we have now. I'd rather just use it and enjoy it, than put it in a box where it is still going to age anyhow. Rather have the experience than worry about the air and light touching it and never enjoying it.

I don't get the collectors that just keep things in the package, I think they are more "historians" of a certain product or company than "collectors" who enjoy the experience of using the item.

I'd be guilty myself of going back in time to the 70's and living there forever however. I suppose we all have our "thing".

@royalcrown

Thanks for the consideration with the possibility of the 1200.

If I don't have a 'New Old Stock' one that's unopened though, I might as well see about restoring this old dog to its former glory.

It all works perfectly would just need a replacement case and a new keyboard.

I've seen the keyboards on ebay, not sure if they're original parts but the sellers seem to say they are.

The case would be the tough one though, I'd have to try and find a really good example case with screws and all the fastenings etc.

If I do go this route I'd like to try and find an accelerator with some ram and a 4GB CF HD to make it a bit more beefy.

Not sad at all. Not the same thing (not even close) but I've been struggling with on/off suicidal depression for the last two years and rekindling my love affair with the Amiga has helped - I hope you get the chance to relive all those fond memories (the old girl's just as much fun as you remember :)) - I'm not really a religious person, but God bless all the same.

Wow, well they may be a different set of circumstances but im sure wanting to be toast is just as painful as not wanting to be but being told you might have to be, if that makes any sense. Well I'm really glad it's helped you. It's been an eye opener for me. Been looking back at old photographs from when I was a kid and getting in touch with old friends. It's helped to be able to value the life I've had so far. You should try and do the same with other aspects of your life as you did with the Amiga. Might be the key for us both. Apologies to all for the morbidity I've brought to the post. But getting back to the Amiga, going backwards is the way forward. I want a bit of an animal of a machine that I can fire up all the old games on with ease. I don't want to cut holes anywhere or Dr the case. Just want it to look standard and clean. :)

Define a reasonable price; should it be less than the owner put in to it? The breakup value?

Lots of people have Amiga's they have restored and updated, including myself.

Couldnt have said it better myself. This is one of the things that hold back new members of the amiga community. There is nothing worse than the amiga hoarders who have tons of amigas and barely ever use them. Then when rare amiga hardware shows up the scoop it up and add it to their collection.
Meanwhile, there are new users or old users getting back into that want expansion boards, net cards, accelerators, whatever. None to be found. :( some of the items I have it literally took YEARS to find. (e.g. Live! 2000 card)

This is interesting.  How many people on the Amiga sites, do you think, are new to the platform?  I don't mean the guys that left for the latest & fastest, and then returned, but people that never saw an Amiga before, say the year 2000.

It's easy to point fingers at those who have patiently accumulated and preserved their systems.  The real problem is that the Amiga lives in a shrinking pond with decreasing resources (hardware, developers, and consumers).   Even A500s are starting to be treasured and command a rising price (rightly so!), one could only give one away a few years ago.

If I were tempted to vent, it would be at those short-sighted Amigans who recycled or landfilled their old machines when tempted to move on.  There was even a aggravating episode of "This Old House" about 10 years ago in which an A500 was tossed into a dumpster.  "Out with the old, in with the new ..." was actually said.

I also tend to think that these days, folks willing to plunk down the bucks on old hardware and systems are more likely care for them the best. I still periodically use my Amigas, but for quite a few years now my focus has shifted towards preserving and maintaining what I have. Generally my hardware is fully restored (if necessary, otherwise left alone), clean, and 100% functional. I've spent more time tinkering in this direction than actually using the systems, to be honest.

Yeah, some of the things are difficult to find, but do eventually pop up if you're patient and willing to pay. I had no problem getting a NOS A1200 from Petro, just sent the money and got the item. (I'd been half-ass looking for a new one for a few years.) Funnily enough, I decided I didn't really need another A1200 after all, and posted it up for sale on the forum here for what I paid (plus currency conversion/bank fees). Guess what? No one wanted it. So, I'll replace the caps, stick it back in its box. I figure it might be worth something to another enthusiast in 10 years' time. I also sometimes sell off a few things here and there if they'll never realistically find a home in one of my computers, but I never sell at a loss. That way, I know the buyer will be someone who has the right sized nads to look after it properly. :P

Doh... just missed out on an 8mb expansion fornthe 1200. Think it was a Amitek 1209. Wasnt an accelerator though so was ummin and arrrin. Went for 25 quid buy it now. Probably should have got it. Ideally want an 030 at 42mhz or something along those lines don't want to spend too much but I know these things are collectors items now.

How did you manage to get the amiga from Petro? I've mailed twice expressing interest with no response. What kind of info did you put in your initial mail to him?

Also what kind of condition did yours arrive in? Did you get instructions and were the cables and psu discoloured. I've read some forums saying the extras are sometimes missing or come in poor condition.
I thought the whole point was tonget something new but old.

Thanks.

It's a bit more money, but, I'd recommend one of the new ACA model accelerators from Amigakit.  They have an efficient flow and come with an ocean of memory.

The only snag is ensuring that you have a compatible motherboard revision.  I have 2 with rev 1D4 that I could never get working, even with the published modifications.  I have another 1200 (don't know the rev), that it was plug-n-play.  It is very impressive accelerator when it works.

EDIT:  I pulled them out and checked.  The 1D.1 and 1D.4 don't work so far.  The 1D.3 does work.

As you might bave guessed I know very little about accelerated amigas. Ive seen some on ebay at 42 mhz. Is thjs clock speed irrelevant and afe there other important factors to consider when buying an accelerator. The fastest one on amigakit seemed to be 030 @ 30mhz with 128mb. Is this fast enough to play 3d games like doom alienbreed 3d and quake conversions?
I don't need it to be a supercomputer but I'd like it to be good enough if I did decide to tinker with the likes of those.

Ta.

I could only guess at the clock threshold for enjoyable playability with those games, not a gamer.  :(  However, 128 or even 64 MB of fast memory is a large playground for Amiga applications!

Afterthought:  you might try a search for those titles on this sight and the web in general.  There has been a lot of discusion about their playability.

Youtube has many videos showing 3D shooters like doom and others, they seem to need an 060, the faster the better.

Not to worry thrn with regards to doom. Is there any point in me getting an 030 then if im just gonna play old amiga games like frontier and settlers or am I just being really silly? Who woild benefit from say a 30mhz 030 with 8mb of ram and wbo would benefit from 128?
Im nuzt trying to make sure I'm covered if I become adventurous.

Just remember that you may need to do hardware timing fixes on Your Amiga motherboard if you go with Individual Computers ACA123x Accelerators. (The 64 and 128 megabyte acc. boards)

I don't think the 030 is too fast for want you want, so if you can afford it you might as well get it.

An 030 should be fast enough to play AB3D and Doom.  Quake pretty much requires an 060.  Agreed, check youtube for videos different people have posted of them playing these games, and their relative hardware specs.  Good luck!  :)

I just sent an email per his instructions when he was taking orders. The biggest PITA was arranging bank transfer payment as I'm in the US (xe trade is the way to do it, IMO). Just make sure to get in early on the next round and you should have no problem getting one.

Mine was from the second batch, came with sealed WB floppies but no books or polys. The PSU and mouse had a little bit of that brown residue that wiped right off. The computer itself was mint and unused, absolutely spotless. Inside looked perfect.

That said, they sat in storage in India for years, and have been shipped around a few times. Because of that my expectations were checked, but fortunately the computer itself was perfect. I can believe others weren't as happy.

'030 is the way to go on the accelerator IMHO, ideal would be to pick up a clean Blizzard 1230, or even a GVP 1230-II with RAM (I have one of the latter, it's stellar for playing old games via WHDLoad and demos).

Whats this brown sticky residue that people speak of on the wires? Lol.
Sounds awful. I can't beleieve there is NOS still kicking about. It's ridiculous after such a long time of the company going bust. Surely someone somewhere should have sold every last one by now!! :S

You missed the story.  Petro T. was in charge of sales back during the Amiga Technology days.  Apparently he sold (or swindled, depending which story you read) a shipping container full of A1200's to some company in India, probably to be turned into cheap character generators for studios, but who wound up never using them.  They sat forgotten for 17-some-odd years, then he somehow got back in touch with the people who he'd sold 'em to (probably over beers at the pub), who remembered they still had 'em and agreed to sell 'em back.  He then shipped 'em to Germany, and is now selling them on a first-come, first-served basis basically at his cost.  It's a great deal for a NOS A1200 if you're able to get one, and most have been working well for people despite that they could have bad caps or any other manner of ailment which affects computers of this age.  As for the brown residue?  Who knows, probably curry powder or something, LOL.  ;)

Why the urge to play quake or Doom, weren't those pc only games and just fan ports for the Amigas ? I think i'd rather play those particular games on my pc where they prob run as they should.

I dont really want to play quake or doom. I just see it as the absolute limit of what I'll ever want to do with a  amiga. Just to be safe. I've got an animal of a pc, I just want to pretend I live in the early nineties again. :)
