Title: WinUAE Workbench Display Issue
Post by: Managarm on April 13, 2013, 10:28:56 AM
Hi Guys,

I hope someone can help. I'm using WinUAE to emulate an A1200 running Workbench 3.9. I swear I didn't change anything, but one day I loaded it up and the resolution had gone from 1024 X 768 Picasso to 320 X 200 PAL. When I tried to change it, the screen's so small the Save and Use buttons aren't visible!

Then, because I'm an idiot, I decided to mess with the Overscan preferences to see if I could scroll down to it. Instead, I'm left with being able to move the mouse around a small portion of the top left of the screen.

Is there any way out of this without a reinstall?

See if you can get to the early boot menu or use a boot disk/adf to get to the shell and see if it allows you to run:

sys : prefs/screenmode
...      ^^
remove the spaces

Also from the shell if the above doesnt work try going to Prefs/Envarc/Sys and rename the existing screenmode.prefs to .bak :-)

Thanks for the reply; I've had some joy. Trying to launch Workbench off a floppy and running the Screenmodes prefs does nothing. Literally. It just flashes the "Attempting to load..." message then nothing.

I renamed the Screenmodes and Overscan prefs files and the screen area is now the normal size. It's still stuck on the tiny resolution however and I can't see the Use or Save buttons.

Is there anyway of editing the .prefs file manually? I know it's not a text file, it appears to be some sort of IFF?

Make sure that you have 8 MB or more Fast RAM configured and some RTG graphics card memory as well. Your problem sounds as if you removed all RAM from the configuration. OS 3.9 needs at least 8 MB RAM to run at all and Picasso96 needs a graphics card.

What resolution are you wanting to use?

Boot with no startup-sequence and type loadwb.
Then change the screenmode from there.
