Title: Did Commodore have a website?
Post by: danwood on March 07, 2013, 09:07:15 AM
Just wondering if Commodore ever had a website in the early 90s?  I didn't get on the web until late 1994, but by then most of the tech companies had a website on-line for a year or two.

I know they owned they commodore.com domain (owned by a travel company recently iirc, but seems to be offline now) and the web was starting to become mainstream by 1994, so did they ever have a web presence?

Wayback machine etc. doesn't go back far enough to check sadly.

Nope. I believe BIX and email were the extent of their internet presence.

"On 30 April 1993, CERN announced that the World Wide Web would be free to anyone, with no fees due."

With free web browsers only becoming a reality by '94... Commodore had tanked by then. Put bluntly, The web didn't really exist (in a useful sense), until after Commodore failed.

Iirc the only way in 1994, I could get on the internet was at my school with the use of a Unix terminal and gopher. Mosaic was released in april 1993 - so I also doubt that Commodore had a www presence on the internet in 1994.

That was a full year before they went under though, the reason I asked is I think Microsoft and Apple had presences on the web in late 93/early 94, guess making a website was probably the last thing on their minds in early 94 though.

And don't forget about Quantum Link starting in the late 80's. Not by Commodore, but was all about Commodore support. (now known as gasp..... AOL)

CompuServe also had an internet gateway but as mentioned before it was all terminal based gopher and ftp. html and http were out but licensed until the mid 90's.

in 1994/1995 I was cruzing the internet with my 56K modem, Windows 3.11 and trumpet winsock... and flat rate, one payment/download what you wanted.

My BBS closed down around then, but it's been online again since 2000 :-) Not that anyone uses it, I don't anymore. It's there for nostalgia.
