Title: amiga amp an AHI
Post by: AAACHIPSET on February 20, 2013, 03:51:12 PM
installed  amiga amp ..played a bit with settings..using mpega libary  ..actually couldnt  find a 030  fpu version ..so tried 020fpu version  ..only worked  when i renamed to mpega.library ..wasnt  great so did same to a 040/fpu  version  ..amigaamp tells me to select unit 1  ..an a stereo output on ahi ..i do but even though i save the config ..ahi reverts to the music player ..not unit 1 ..its play back is one second at a time ..
on utube i watched  a guy play mp3  on amiga1200  030  ..which is what i got ..i must be missing something  here ...any help ..must be in a config file of ahi  or  amiga amp  ..

In AHI prefs the button where you select a unit is not a setting. With the button you select the unit you want to change the settings for. The settings for all units are saved when you click on Save.

So, set the button to music unit, then select Paula:Stereo++ and 22050 Hz. Now set the button to unit 0, select Paula:Stereo++, 22050 Hz and 2 or more channels. Repeat this step for all the other units. Depending on the AHI version more channels will reduce the volume.

In AmigaAMP also set the decoder to 22050 Hz.

Reduce frequency to 11025.

Use mpega020.library instead of ...FPU...

Even an 040@40MHz doesn't cut it if you want full quality mp3 playback (not half rate). An 060@50MHz can only just achieve it. Don't expect to be able to multitask though! So all in all, I'd stay away from mp3's and stick with wav's or aiff's (which are much better sound quality anyway).

If you're determined to play Mp3 on Amigas at real quality, you need hardware decoding, like a MasPlayer or Delfina.  They work well with Amiga Amp.

This is what I've discovered after 20 years of research, well not quite 20 years but....

Using Amiga AMP

If you've got an 030 don't even bother trying to use AHI, use the built in audio player instead.   Also with an 030 you cannot do much in the way of layer 3 decoding so turn that puppy right down (under AMP settings).

With an 060 you can use AHI (v4.18 don't forget!), use the AHI 16bit tune-up tool and fix up your particular machine to play the best possible 14bit stereo sound (removes hiss).   Choose Stereo FAST++ 14bit mode, that's the best one for an 060, choose an output rate of 22050Hz unless you are running in a 'scan doubled' mode otherwise you can push that old girl right up to 44KHz (I'm talking about Paula users obviously).

Actually I found an even better way recently.   Using 'Exact Audio Copy' you can rip CDROM tracks to WAV (PCM uncompressed audio and exactly what Paula likes best).   You can then play these WAV tracks back easily with AMP, really great quality 720 k/bit sound files with low CPU usage....awesome.

Don't bother to try Amiga AMP, use this instead http://aminet.net/package/mus/play/Prayer2

030 can't play full quality mp3, or it requirs MAS or Delfina

And about AHI, don't us latest versions, they require more horse power than older versions.
