Title: Amiga CD32 loading times
Post by: Lady Eklipse on February 15, 2013, 02:00:27 AM
Hi all!
I'm a retrogamer, but new to Amiga scene. I've bought an Amiga CD32 recently and been trying to load some CD-Rs into it.
I've read about it being finicky towards CD-Rs and that games from compilations load so slow that it takes 1-2 minutes to load the menu and 1-2 minutes for a game. I've watched some videos on YouTube - and yes, it is as slow as on my CD32.
Litil Divil works okay, the same as on the video:

My favourite compilation CD-200 works as slow as mentioned above - but it's the same on the video:

The CD-Rs I use are partly Verbatims and partly Taiyo Yudens, with no printable labels.
Could someone confirm whether such loading times are OK? I've heard different opinions: some say that CD32 loading is fast, at least faster than from floppy - but I don't know how much would you wait for floppy to boot?
Others say that CD32 is slow.
But how many seconds does it take to load a certain game? Any game would do.
The reason I'm asking is because I'd like to know whether my CD32 should work like this? Or it is still worth trying to find some CD-R brands which would work better?

Any comments are highly appreciated.
Best regards,
Helga.

I have one CD32 and loading times on my unit is painfully slow, and in my case not worth using copies. I have also installed new laser with no benefit, I also try to use the laser adjustment.
I did notice that if I could somehow raise the laser closer to the disk it may work better.
BTW, my CD32 works fine using original pressed disks.

I wanted to try better quality disks to see if I could get better performance, but none are available in singles.

The Cd32-200 CD has in a menu to adjust the CD speed. Tonight I will lock it up where the option is.

I played a lot of burnt CD32 CD's and I use Verbatims and I don't notice the speed slowness. The CD 32 has only a Double Speed CD-ROM.

I think a double-speed 300k/sec CD-ROM should smoke a 20k/sec Amiga floppy drive!  ;)

The Amiga CD32 I've got on ebay.com.au loads up copied CD's fast.

The compilation CD's are hell of lot faster than floppy.  The menus should not take 1 to 2 minutes to load, neither should the games!

My CD32 also loads copied CD's "fast". It used to be slow but now after installing a new cd drive the compilation cd's is really fun to use.

The best CD-Rs to use with CD32s are cheap ones with a silver reflective surface, preferably with a printable top side on them. If you use high quality CD-Rs with a dark blue surface the weak laser has trouble reading the data.

Download and burn an actual CD32 game and try it instead of those compilations, the games should load swiftly if you use the right CD-Rs.

Hello, i also got a cd32 machine from ebay, i noticed the longer loading times with compilation cd-roms, but when running a cd-rom single game, it is pretty forward. I guess the loading custom menus and some other mods in order to fit many games, some of them not made to run on cd32, slow things down a bit. By the way does any one knows if mega lo mania runs on our beloved cd32 ???
Happy gaming.
