Title: Your first ever Amiga experience?
Post by: AmiDelf on January 27, 2004, 11:08:55 PM
I just wonder what was your first ever Amiga? Why did it take you by storm? Interesting reading...

Me...
Well, I got myself mine in 1988. My parents asked me if I wanted a C64 or a A500. I said A500 and got it. Played a lot, and got a bit borred of it, so in 1990 I found out that Amiga is for more than just fun.

Got myself Deluxe Paint and started to draw. In 1993 I sold my Amiga 500, with 1084 monitor and Commodore printer, for the same price wich I bought it in 1988.

For one year, I looked at PC's, tried them. But it wasnt the same and in August 1994. I've got myself my first computer with HD. It was Amiga 1200, with 260mb HD, AmigaOS v3.0 and 14" Microvitec monitor.

From that day, when AmigaOS v3.0 booted in between 1 and 2 seconds on a 14.17MHz computer. I knew that this computer will be my for ever :) It amazed me so much, that I still run Amiga. I love it and Windows95 didn't scared me off. I knew all the time that Amiga is the best choice for me.

And I hope to be an Amigan for the rest of my life :)

Michal, www.amigaworld.org

Umm.. Quickly.. I was a C64 user in ~84, wanted an A1000 in 85 but couldn't afford one, so I saved my pennies and bought a C128. Finally in ~88 I got an A500.  Honestly I bought it for it's gaming capabilities, gfx and sound were just so much better than anything out there at the time :-o

I was thirteen, she was thirteen, we used to walk home the same way from school and one day we got talking....

Oh wait...it was round at a mate's house. His parents had an A2000 (one where you had to insert a 1.2 kickstart disk) I remember it had a hard drive and a bridgeboard and after seeing him play around with it, seeing WB, the way it would 'mount' the HD  :-P and just generally playing games I was in love. The following Christmas I got my mum to shell out the 399GBP necessary for my own A500....

Well.....I guess the first time I saw a miggy was somewhere in 87. At a friend of my big brother. Playing some flight sim. In my memory reconstruction I later deduced that it prolly was F/A-18 Interceptor :-).

It wasn't untill 91 that I wanted a computer (I had an Atari 2600 I inherited from my brothers before that :-)). I looked at C64's and nearly bought a second hand one cos it had F15 Strike Eagle. But I decided no to, so with the coming of Sinterklaas to The Netherlands in 91 I bought a Kick 1.3 A500 at Byte computerstore in Groningen and a 1084s at Tandy.

Had some neat games with it, Days of Thunder, SotB II, Nightbreed Action Game (gawd that was scary, hey I only was 11 ;-)) and something else.

I managed to destroy my SotB II disks by pulling them about or switching of while it was booting. Still have those disks up to this day.

Then I discovered the workbench disks and c:Say...aaaaaaaah the fun I had with that. Soon ofcourse I grew bored with the games and started copying stuff. The most notable games back then for me must've been Birds of Prey and Wolfpack (AWOOOOOOOOOGA AWOOOOOOOOOOOOGA).

In september 92 I bought The One magazine for the first time and kept buying that mag till it was deceased in 95(?). Great humour for adolescent brats like me :-). And I learned quite a lot of English from reading Amiga mags I think.

Early 93 I sold my A500 and bought an A1200 (bought that one in Dokkum).

Got a modem in 94 due to a big article about datacomms in the only Dutch Amiga Magazine. Great times I had chatting with sysops and leeching warez (*cough*).

Eventually I started using the modem for internet access (guess that must've been ~96) and slowly but surely my Fidonetting and BBS'ing declined.

Then I discovered IRC. Oh dear. That cost my parents a sweet load of money. Not to mention the complaints about keeping the phone line busy.

Bought PPC/Bvis in 99 or thereabouts which I kept using until I got my first PC in 2001. Still have the A1200, with which I had a hate/love relation with eversince I got that damned PPC.

Don't use my Amiga for much else than IRC and email these days really. Holding on to it hoping OS4 will run on it

-edit- Deja-vu?

I think I've already seen a thread like this :)....

1997. For some reason, I'd just always wanted an Amiga. The first thing I remember seeing on an Amiga was Zool 2 running on an A500. The game looked really good, and there was just something exotic about Amigas. I swapped my SuperNES for that same one, which a small part of my mind regrets (I had a lot of sweet games for the SNES) but in the end it was my introduction to this world... I eventually gave the A500 away, when I got my A1200.

I began as a true Jay Minor fanatic, not with that flakey (but often times kool) C64, but rather with an Atari 400. I spent a lot of time with my Atari and joined a small Atari 8-bit user's group finally in the early 90's. That is when I went to one of the user's houses and he showed me his Multi-tasking Amiga 500 which TOTALLY blew me away! Apple Macs were far from impressive and the 386's of the time were even less so. I had seen pictures of the Amiga running in old computer magazine's in the 80's and knew that if you were going to pick what computer to buy a game for you were HIGHLY suggested to go with Amiga over Mac or PC, but actually using an Amiga was something new all together!

So as fate would have it, he aquired another 500 and sold it to me, after which I spent a lot of time doing OctaMED tunes, and trying to understand the OS. I eventually upgraded to a 2000 (hated it) 600, broken 3000 (sad story) and eventually a 1200 which was later stolen. So now I am stuck with emulation till I have enough flow to order my new 1200.

I REALLY can not wait to see the future of Amiga OS, I just wish it could run on Mac Hardware so badly! :(

I first saw one at a friends one day after school.
We played Microprose' Formula One for ages, and it just blew me away. He had a standard A500, and when he told me about the A1200 which was about to be released, I knew I had to have one.

About 1987 I went to a commodore 64/128 user group, saw an A500 being demoed with an animated  looney tune cartoon with stereo sound, went home and sold my 128....... and here I am almost 14 years later.

My first Amiga was the A1000.  Got that for cheap with kickstart and workbench 1.1,  1.2, and 1.3.  Back then I for some reason used the Kickstart 1.2 disk the most. Anyway it had a Spirit Technology Inboard (I think it was called) so it had an additional 512k of fastram. Plus of course the additional 256k front connector.  My friend wanted an Amiga too so he found himself an A1000 but he was jealous because his only had 512k of ram.  Anyway one year later i traded it in to the computer store I got it from for an A500 with WB 1.3.2, Supra A501 clone card, and C=1084 monitor.  I still have that 500, but now I have an A2000, an A1200, and A3000T.  I liked my A1000 for all the tricks I could do with it, but I really fell in love with the A500.  Ordered some regular software like DPaint III, which I immediately got addicted to and some PD disks from TLAS in Texas and started myself into Music with OctaMED 4.  Long live Amiga!!  :-)

My first experience?  After the premiere of Star Trek Generations I got to chatting with some friends in the parking lot of the movie theatre.  Discussion was normal, bad movie, summoning demons, the usual chit-chat of teenagers.  I mentioned this Compaq I'd just bought and my friend went "you ain't seen a computer yet."  Went back to his house, and he showed me his pride and joy:

An Amiga 1500

For hours the thing blew me away.  With an 030-50Mhz onboard, this thing was amazing.

I couldn't afford buying one till '97 or so however.

I had an Amiga 500 (with video adaptor for TV output).

A-10 tank killer (that game was guru addicted), Gods, etc... :-D

We added 512K of ram in the slots on the bottom after a year.

Then came the Tandy 1000TL2 (with SimCity and Eye of the Beholder) and the Amiga died out in the closet. :-(

I was a C64 user up to 1986 when I got a used A1000 at last. I loved it and used it and hacked the heck out of it up to 1989 when I sold it to buy the A3000 I have now. I've never looked back and still use it on a regular basis. My favorite thing to do was show it off in computer class at school. The teacher would talk about how great the PC was and say how cool windows 3.0 was, then in college some professor said Windows was the first real multi tasking OS, I mentioned my Amiga and he never heard of it. I brought it in and showed him the Demos and stuff I collected. He was totaly blown away! I couldnt believe this computer could do all it did at the time it was new. I told him I had to even slow it down and degrade it because the demos and games wee made for a much slower system. I loved that!!!!

No lie, here in the Us most of the computer teachers I have talked with in school have no idea what an Amiga is. I just dont know how they can be a teacher in the computer subjects and not know of the Amiga at all.

I was an avid C= 64 user from age 10 and knew of the Amiga when it was released.  I went down to the local mall computer store and drooled on their display window at the demos of Juggler and other things showing off the Amiga.  It was out of reach finacially so I had to be content with drooling and embarrasing the store folks with my constant loitering and playing.   I often go to the same mall and look at the store (which is a health food store now) and remember that.

Ahhh, more nostalgia.  :-D

Aah yes, it must have been in 85 or 86.. I was a little kid back then. My godfather took me to his work (he was working at PCI-Data, the company that imported Commodores to Finland back then).. There I saw an A1000. I got to see a few games and drew with Deluxe Paint.  It was a truly magical machine, but of course I couldn't get one just then - it was very expensive.. So, I got a C-64 around 1985 and loved that too. :-)

Later on I got to use the Amiga a lot every time I was visiting my godfather, as he had an A500 of his own. All the early 80s games and apps still bring many good memories. :-) The clean 32-colour graphics and good use of the stereo abilities..

Finally in 1989 my parents caved in to my requests and one day my dad arrived from a business trip to UK with an A500 in his suitcase. Oh, joy! The machine was later upgraded with an extra 512k, an extra floppy and then ks 2.04 and an AR3.

That machine actually lasted up to 1995 in that config with daily use. I wanted a HDD so badly, but I never managed to save enough from my underpaid summer jobs. My parents weren't willing to put any more money into Amigas, as they were convinced that it's a "toy"..

I went PC after that, but got an A4000 later on. I'd have to say that this was a good thing. Without venturing outside the world of Amigas for a while, I probably wouldn't be employed at the moment.. PC skills are very important nowadays and I actually thank my father for seeing that back then (even though he didn't necessarily understand it fully himself ;-).

Still love the AmigaOS.. It's always so nice to sit down at the A4000 and boot it up and forget the outside world. ;-)

Well ,

First time I saw an Amiga, it was an A1000 in a french magazine called "LED Micro" back in 1984/5. The mag featured a lengty report of the Worl Premiere of the Amiga, with beautifull photos (What a Beast!), screenshots (aaah! kingtut), and an extensive cover of how it amazed the great Andy Warrol.

I was blown out! and instantaneously felt in love ! That WILL BE THE Computer I want and I got it... well in 1998 (A1000 won on IBazar for 600 French Francs) ;-)

In the meantime I saved all that I can on my small revenue and finally bought my real first Amiga in 1987: an Amiga 500 + A501 + DPaint II for the amazing sum of 9000 Francs at the time :-)  and never regret it. Soon after I bought an external floppy to avoid to many swapping ;-) and one of the very first version of PageStream (was called Publishing Partner Master at the time).

Since this purchase I never bought ANY other computers than Amigas, currently I own 23 units, almost all the models ever made, except the A600, A4000T, A1500, and prototypes :-D (BTW, if you have these model you want to sell... :-) )

Of course I tried or was forced to work on others (PeeCees (berk berk berk :-P ) and MacIntoshes (better) but never found the same feeling/ease of use/power than with my Amiga.

I'm currently waiting for AmigaOS4.0 to buy an AmigaONE G4 to complete my collection, I will don't mind a laptop too, but don't despair to see one day a real new custom Amiga ;-)

Amigalement,
Jean-François, Amiga ONLY since 1985.

Getting a Batpack for Christmas 1989. I had wanted an ST as all my mates had them, but thankfully, my Dad knew someone who knew better than my mates!

I was so keen to get it setup that I managed to completely miss the audio to modulator Y lead and was happily playing Batman and New Zealand Story without sound for a few hours before I realised...

My cousin had bought an A500 with a 1084 monitor and the game Mercenary. I was totally sold on Amiga after that.
We played the game all night and after that he showed me Amegas.
6 months later I bought an secondhand A500, the seller thought that it was broken, it wasn´t. It was the floppydrive that was broken so I fixed it and had many fun hours with it and the rest is history.  :-)

Mmmm..... Got my first amiga a couple of months ago. (A500 + A590 HDD module).

Then got a 1084s monitor for it, and a couple of weeks ago got a 2.04 rom ,workbench 2.1 + a new mouse for it. Oh yes, and a 2gig scsi hdd for the a590. All up now I've also added a 512k expansion to the amiga itself, and I put in 2meg more ram into the a590, giving the machine 3MB all up.

Got my C-64 probably around '87/88 and thats pretty much around the time when i learned of the Amiga.

Seen it running first time in local computer shop around '89/90 and was blown away, i couldnt afford one so ended up with an STE, there was no love there and it was gone within 6 months. I then finally could afford the real comp that i wanted and that was the Amiga,  around '90/91 which was the A500+.
Turrican and lots of scene demos (phenomena enigma) had totaly blown me away. Absolutely nothing touched the Amiga in gfx and sound back then.  :-)

Got the A1200 around about 6 months after it's release...late '93/early '94 and spent most of the years after adding all sorts to it, 030 to 040, HD/CD-Roms/Towers and all the usual stuff, last big spend on it was the BPPC with BV around '99 ish

In 1995.  I wanted to buy a sNES to play games.  but a friend said easier to get games for the amiga and the graphics were smoother than a PC.  i had never heard of amiga before, but when I saw Adams Family ( crap game ) on an A500 with 1084 i was amazed by the smooth sprites, vivid coors stereo sound.  then bought a GVP HD with 2 meg ram.  Then put joystick down to play with Dpaint,Got Real 3d from Amiga format, needed more cpu power, sold A500 for A1200 with 40 mhz 030, multiscan monitor, found AGA too slow for photogenics, then waited and saved and saved until i bought my dream machine a4000 68060 with CV64 17 inch monitor,CDRW, Hypercom

I never owned an Amiga (nor any Commodore machine), only MSX and many PC's. First I wanted to play old games, and got a few 500's and a 1083 quite cheap and I was happy for some time. Then I wanted more and more.  And now I've spent quite a nice amount of money (for a student) in the A1200 and its expansions.  I use it for games and demos, and it's also an excellent machine for demoparties.  I'm also planning learning some AGA programming..

It was 1987 I think, a friend was going to sell me his C128 but then I read about the Atari and thought that sounds far better...  Then one day I was in Belfast and went to have a look in a computer shop at the Atari, they had an Amiga showing the Newtek demo reel 1 with HAM pics, I was completely gobsmaked - forget the Atari!

I couldn't afford an A500 (they were 700 GBP at the time) but I later found somewhere selling old French A1000's cheap, so I got one of those - complete with stickers over the keys!

I later got an A520 20MB HD and 2MB RAM upgrade which plugged into the A1000 backwards and made a lot of noise.  I also changed the CPU for a 68010.

Then in about 91 I got an A500+, later I went to an A1200 and a 60MB HD.  It also got a 50MHz 030, Zip and Jaz drives.  I still have it but haven't used it in years.

I got an A1000 in 2002 in France this time but this time with US keyboard - go figure.  I was messing with it the other night, I finally found a driver for Radeon video capture in BeOS and was checking it out.

Playing with the A2000 they had in art class.

My first "own Amiga experience"? Admiring every last detail of the exterior of my shiny new A500, which I kept doing for a week after I realised that I should've bought an A520 RF-modulator too, and every store in town was sold out...

HE HE!

My first experience was when I borrowed an A500 for the computer store I was working at.

I got several cover disks and played around with the demos.  Being the impatient person I was, I just ran the programs without reading the 'readme' files....

One program was called "Nightmare" (if anyone could find this and post it I'd would die happy).

I ran it but it didn't do anything.  I tried over and over again and nothing came up.  I was in a hurry to work so I just left it up and running....

Heres the good part, I come home to a very, VERY pissed of brother.  Aparently the Nightmare program was an early screne saver of sorts that would flash a bloody skull for a second on the screen while letting out a very, very loud, blood curdling scream (in sterio ofcourse).

The first time it went off it had my bro. OUT of the shower and into the backyard thinking some one was killing our cat (no JOKE!!!)

The second time had him so paranoid he walked around the whole house with a bat!

Durring his rounds he was in front of the Miggy when it went off the third time and I think he used all his reserve NOT to put the bat through the 1084    :-D

OK, anyone top that?!?!?!!?!

My first experience with Amiga was seeing a A500 at a friends house ... I remember him showing of the "say" program in workbench making it say some very rude things to his granny!!! :-o and playing i think it was turbo outrun & some flight sim. I was totally amazed at the graphics and sound, it was something i had never seen before, me and most of my other mates at the time still had spectrums. I then begged and begged my parents for a A500 finally a few month's later for my 10th birthday i received my first amiga a new A500+ with cartoon classics, later i went on to get a 1200, CD32, & 4000  :-D

The Hitchcock effect! You knew it was going to happen, but you never knew exactly when, and the tension was off the meter! Seventeen years old, and I was cowering behind the bed with my friend, neither of us dared go near the bloody thing.

Whoever coded that was a sadist. :-D

My first computer experience was a PC back in 1984 or 1985,
(I visited my oldest brother at work).
It was text only, black background with green text, that's about all I remember,
since I was only 6 years old at the time, but I do remember ONE thing...
I wasn't impressed :-)
So, my first Amiga experience was back in 1987 or 1988, when seeing adverts in
a store, that you could make animated cartoons on it and that really impressed me!
About the same time one of my brothers bought a ZX 128k Spectrum, although he
wanted an A500, but it was too expensive at the time.
I wasn't too impressed by the Spectrum either :-)
So in 1990 or 1991, two of my brothers (one of them owned the Spectrum) put
togther some cash and bought a used A500, now I was impressed :-)
About the same time I sat with a Mac for the first time,
(my oldest brother had lend it from work, to play some golf game on it :-)
it was a Macintosh Classic and it could only display greyscale, not impressed :-)
And in 1992 my brothers bought a second used A500, so they could have one each!
At this time I started to have some computer learning in school and yes
you guessed right, on PC's...
It was Victor 386's with Win 3.1 and since then I get sick whenever I see Win 3.1
again :-) It must be the worst piece of crap I have EVER seen, I can't believe
how it could be so freaking popular, yuck!!
In 1993 (I think it was) I played Chaos Engine and Flashback for the first time
and since then, they are my absolute favourite games!!
About the same time, one of my brothers (not the Spectrum one) bought a Rochard
harddrive for his A500. At this time he bought a computer magazine called
"Dator Magazin" or "DMZ", the biggest computer magazine in Sweden at the time
and it only covered Amiga :-) I ofcourse also read them and started to learn more
and more about the Amiga.
In 1994 he sold his A500 with the Rochard and bought an A1200 and I really liked
it, since it had better graphics and was faster and I was amazed about the
startup time!
And in 1995 I bought the A1200 from my brother and since then I have been a serious
Amiga/computer user. Before, I only used my brothers Amigas once in a while to play
some games.
On x-mas 1995 my oldest brother bought us younger brothers a PC, a P75 to be exact
with Win 95 and thanks to that I got to learn Win 95 (and up), quite a bit, which
is a neccesity these days since there are PC's everywhere (just hoping AmigaOne
and OS4 will change that, at least a bit).
In 1996 I bought a Blizzard 1230-IV with 16Mb ram for my A1200. Shortly after the
orginial 120Mb HD died and lost a lot of stuff, that I didn't want to loose and
that was a bit tough!
In 1997 one of my brothers bought a PC (the one I bought the A1200 from).
In 1998 I bought a BlizzardPPC, with the 040 overclocked since 2002 and it
works perfectly!
But the cooling and power troubles made it impossible to run the BPPC in the
original case, so in 1999 I bought a PowerTower with a new A1200 motherboard and
sold the other A1200.
About the same time the other Amiga brother went to PC, I still got his A500, now
with a GVP Impact Series II HD and an extra floppy drive, jeehaw :-)
In 2001 I bought a PC (sorry, didn't know better :-) and in 2002 I bought a
BVisionPPC for the Amiga. And in 2003 I gave the PC to one of my brothers
(the Spectrum one) since I was fed up with all the troubles Windows gave me, so I
bought a PowerMac G4 instead and I'm quite happy with that so far!
Now that we have come to 2004 (the year of the Amiga, hopefully :-)
I'm planning to buy AmigaOS 4 for my BPPC and maybe an AmigaOne also,
if money allows it!
I hope that the Amiga can get in the fastlane again (just enough), so that I can
convert my brothers back to the Amiga!
I also try to support the Amiga community in any way I can, have registered 21
shareware progs so far, done some catalog translations, done a little betatesting
and maintains the Famous Amiga Uses list.
Although I use other computers like Mac's and PC's, the Amiga is still my favourite
computer, mostly because it got that something special, that makes it so fun to use!
Up until 1998, I thought that Amiga was the best computer and I didn't want to
have a job where I had to work with PC's, but with time and alot of computer usage
and experience, I have learned that no computer is the best, they all have
their pros and cons and as luck turned out, I got a job where there are Amigas that
I use on a daily basis! I use it to put in adverts, like buy and sell stuff for our
local TV channel, and we use Scala InfoChannel 500 for the job. But since I'm a
system technician I also get to work with Mac's and PC's.

Wow, that was NOT the short version :-) any way I still use my A1200 quite alot
and intend to do so for the forseeable future!

Happy Amiga computing everybody!!
And thanks to the Hyperion guys and all the rest for the great job with AmigaOS 4!!

My Amiga...the first time I saw her I was in love.  Then I paid her a few thousand  pesos and she loved me.  It was love at first transaction.

Ah...my first time, you ask?  Oh the memories.

It was in the spring of '89...I was just finishing my first semester of college when I met her, there, in the corner of that computer store.  She was sitting on a clean white table, looking like she'd been sitting there all day waiting just for me.

I sat down in front of her.  God, I thought.  She's so beautiful...so talented...too much for me to handle.  I bet she can tell how nervous I am.

I felt bold.  But not bold enough.   I sat there next to her, and felt as if she was saying "Go ahead, silly.  I don't bite."

I gently slid the mouse across the screen and opened her Deluxe Paint.  Oh...oh God the things she showed me.  I wanted her, then.  I wanted to take her home and ... do things with her.  I wanted to create new vistas and explore things as I never had before.  But the price.  It was more than I could pay.  Or was it?

I considered the worldly things I'd been waiting for, and put them aside, mentally.

We went home together, and I laid her down gently on the bed, slowly removing every covering until she sat exposed in front of me.  I traced every line with my fingertip, feeling the lambent power like scenting a heady perfume...

In the time we had together I saw more in those short years than I had in the decade I'd spent with others before her.  Others came after her - younger, faster, sexier.  But I'll never forget her, my first Amiga 500.

My first Amiga experience was in NYC back in 85 watching Debbie Harry and Andy Warhol painting in PaintCraft (Aegis Images) and using an Amiga Live! to digitize then make Debbie into a work of Art on the computer... Then watching the A1000 genlock work and thinking my life is about to change, and it did..

When I was around 13-14 years old there was a computerstore close to my school. They had different Amigas running all the time and the games they ran on them looked so much better than those on my C128. I used to visit the store every day after school just to play Amigagames. Finally I saved up enough money to buy a used A500 with a 1084S monitor back in 1989. I still use the monitor, talk about quality.  ;-)

Mine was seeing the Amiga 1000 at a Micro Age computer store in the Bay Area of CA.  It was running the Boing demo and I was amazed!  I wanted one so bad but I was only 14.  (I later saw the demo on a Atari 800XL lol)  I was into the Atari XL and C64 at the time and did not get an Amiga until 1987 when I finally sold off my Atari/Commodore stuff!  I have been hooked ever since.  I own every Amiga model except for the CDTV and 32.

When my first Amiga arrived, it was a glorious day... Ay first, I was disappointed, as I was hoping to get an Atari ST (was impressed at the time, and I liked the italic-style F-keys ;-) ). But once I started playing on the A500, damn I was grateful!

My first memory of it was Gordon Hardwood delivering the thing to our house, but then leaving on the doorstep in the pooring rain - surprise surprise, it didn't work!
Once we got  a replacement, New Zealand Story was the first game I ever played on it. :-)

My first Amiga experience was around '88-89 when I saw my mate's A500. I really wanted one but I could never afford a computer until Jan 96 when I bought an A1200. I now have four Amigas: the A1200, an A2000, an A300UX and an A4000D!  :-)

Hmmm, the first time I ever SAW an Amiga, I was in Games and Gadgets (now Electronics Boutique)around 1986.  It was running Marble Madness.  That game was UNREAL for 86.

Then I went over to a friends house and he had a 500.  He was running some adventure game and then in the background he was downloading a file.  Blew my mind!

I was strictly a C64/128 guy at that point.  Seeing what this guy's amiga could do was something that I couldnt comprehend.  I went to college in 89 and lost interest in computers for a few years, but in 93 I got my first miggy, a 1200 with a 14.4 modem and 1084.  Cost me about $1500 bucks  :-D  I've been hooked ever since.

I used to LOVE showing off my 14 mhz amiga multitasking with 10 megs vs the top of the line 486es.  The demos that were out at that time KILLED anything that was on a PC.

Anyone remember the amiga commerical with the ballerina?  Thats the only time I remember seeing the amiga advertised on TV (US).

First Amiga I saw was a 1000 'round a friend's house - man, it was the most elegant looking piece of computer hardware I'd ever seen - no compromises, just perfect! Then he put on "Defender of the Crown" and I was sold that very instant - awesome graphics, amazing sound - truly stunning. To cap it all off he then booted up Deluxe Paint and the rest is history - I've had 2 A500's, one A1200, a CD32 and an A4000 desktop since (plus lots of hardware addons). Good memories...   :-)

Hi

T'was about 1988ish when I first saw an Amiga... and was at the time much more into Atari as a friend had one - I couldn't see the point of no midi port as standard (even though my friend didn't use midi on his ST).

Anyhows, jumping to 1990ish onwards some friends and I would spend EVERY (and I do literally mean EVERY) evening after school + weekends (although weekends eventually became for RPGs - what geeks we were!) playing on an A500 + 512kb upgrade.

I remember Bloodwych 2-player, and some flight "sim" with a green floor, blue sky and wireframe planes (the best was the paper aeroplane) doing dog-fights... and Beach Volley, North and South, etc.

I was absolutely gobsmacked by the quality of the games - then in 1993 for my 18th birthday my dad asked if I wanted a PC and I was all "no no it has to HAS TO be an A1200" - I got the A1200, booted it up and saw wb3.0 - and immediately started tinkering with it for hours - awesome fun.

Year later got a 170mb HDD from my parents (cost over £300!).

I think I could write a book on how much fun I've had with the miggy.

A500 in 1988, maybe 1989. Played POC, Oil Imperium, Stunt Car Racer, It Came
From The Desert and many other games. Some experiments with music.

I was hooked, the Amiga got me. I had become a believer.

1990 was when I had my first Amiga experience.  At the time I had an Amstrad CPC464.  I went to a mate's house and the first thing that he showed me (ahem) ws Kindwords 2.  Now, although this may sound strange, it did totally blow my mind and I resolved to get one.  After that we played Wings and my jaw dropped - incredible!  I made my Dad look at Kindwords which, unsurprisingly, impressed him immensely after the Amstrad and I have been an Amiga user almost ever since.  However, my Dad fails to grasp how superior the Amiga was back then and take it very much for granted.  He is at that odd age where a computer is still fascinating but you imagine it to be instrinsically capable of anything that you demand of it!  He becomes very irate when I explain that he can't complete his desired task on his PC, no matter how bizarre it is.  Needless to say, it is I who bears the brunt of his anger! Tis a strange world.

Games like Monkey Island, Bubba and Stix, Ultimate Soccer Manager, SWOS, and Flashback really impressed me in 95 but it would be another 3 years til I got my first A600.
Then I sold up, got a 500. Sold that, got a A1200 in 2000.
Towered it, sold it in 2002
Got another 1200 in Feb 2003 to remain in desktop form for games, its in fantastic condition nice and white.

Now I have an A600 in the post for all the games w hich wont run on the A1200.  :-D
I love my Classic Amigas!!!
