Hello everyone
I just bought an item from ebay, and am trying to complete the transaction. However, I have come up with a HUGE snag... Whenever I try to complete the payment, I am confronted with a message of "Expanded Use Number", it then asks for a four digit number which apparently is on my credit card statrement next to my "$1.92" charge. WTF?! There is no such thing here! Does anyone know how to find this number out? I don't want any negatives next to my account on ebay. What do I do?!
Any help would be most welcome.
Thank you

I had a problem with that aswell. THe cash was taken directly from my account so there was no four-digit number. Needless to say, I've never used paypal after that... :-x

Right first thing - explain your situation to the seller, as someone who sells on ebay from time to time, I know that its nice to get sincere and regular communications from the buyer should any problems arise.
Secondly, I presume you've looked at your CC statement? It was a long time ago, but there should be a number there.....
-
you should be able to complete the transaction without it. You just wont get you $1.92 back
-
I don't mind it if that happens for now. But how do you do it?

It won't allow me to progress without the number.

Have written to him twice, but he hasn't replied just yet.
So you're saying that the number which was given to me ages ago, should still be there? i.e. the same number to be entered?
But my on-line CC thingy, only goes back like 3months... :-(
Unless I have the mailed one somewhere. :-?

Hello mates,
Had same problem, but finally got it fixed...just do this...
send the following info to: scaninfo@paypal.com
a) account papers where it shows the 1.95 USD being charged.
b) front+back of visacard, you may cross out most digits, i did this and was ok with them. They just need i think the first four digits from it.
c) scan of photo ID card.
and tell them to hurry... it took them 3-5 days in my case and it worked.

Does this number which has the Use number, is it the Paypal Member Number... or the "##9999" number?
-
Isn't that the number on the back of the CC?

i don't know what the hell's going on!
Basically I have three options?
1) The Paypal Member Number?
2) The ##9999 number which is next to the $1.95 surcharge?
3) Or the three digit credit number on the back of the card?
-
I was reading here (http://www.paypaldev.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4528) and it looks (imo) that they're referring to a number next to the charge on your credit card statement.

What is the big fuzz about!
If you have got a four digit number as in XXXX next to the 1.95 USD charge, then that's it!!!

The big fuzz is that if I enter the wrong number, then my Paypal account is closed. That's why I am doing bricks at the moment. :-o
-
you have 3 tries! I think i guessed 1 or two times first :)
-
Ah well, I have just had my credit card disabled on Paypal... turns out it wasn't the "##9999" number after all.
Thanks for everyone's help though.

Maybe they were asking for the CVV number, which is located at the back of the card, where the signature is. It's an extra number, on newer cards, though. But I cant remeber if it's 3 or 4 digit, though.
-
no they ask for the PASSword generated when u started the account for the first time!
some get it others doesnt! , do like haystack (haymigga) say, send them an email...
cheers

You should email paypal and explain the whole thing. Make sure to mention step by step what you did. Of course, calling them is faster. Also, email the seller.

Presumably you've reached the spending limit in your paypal account. The limit which is set until you upgrade your account with the number on your CC statement.
Same happened to me, fear not, as you're not verified you haven't got much to lose, so like I did not long ago, close that paypal account, create a new one, add your card.
You now have a new spending limit (800 quid for me in the UK) and another charge will go to your CC.
Keep checking your CC statement for a week until it appears, then when you have it, enter it next time you log in.
Worked for me.

Errr...oops. Sorry about that, crappy net connection was telling it couldn't connect. Had to reset router. Obviously was working

None would have been taken anyway, regardless of including the above quote :-)
I like a bit of humor :-D

Please only hit the submit button once. Reload and check the page to see it your submission was accepted. A page reload should do.

He said he did that. That's what it looks like to me as to what he said he did. Only sure way to straighten it out would be to contact Paypal. Setting up another account might lead to the same problem if it's a misunderstanding of the instructions.

Yeah, sorry, perhaps I shouldn't have included that disclaimer, its just that some people miss the sarcasm or subtle humour or whatever and go on the offensive!

(In The Simpsons Dr Nick's voice)
Hello everybody,
I wrote to Paypal regarding this prior to me writing on A.org. They had replied by the time I woke up, and now everything is fixed!
For future reference... the Expanded Use Number that is requested is that which appears on your credit card statement as follows...
as an example:
"1234*member"
So you just need to type that in!
NOT the (as an example):
"##1234" (which is right next to the $1.95 surcharge)
I think that that is the transaction number or something, and is NOT the number required by Paypal.
Once again thanks for the input everyone... especially to Slash... who didn't want me to miss his advice! :-D
