Firstly, i would just like to say hello.
I have just joined, and i am overjoyed by doing so. Apart from a solitary few, i didn`t think the Amiga was alive anymore. The joy, when i did an intensive internet search, and found this site. It warms me to know that the beloved Amiga is still loved.
Twelve years ago, i emigrated to the U.S.A, where i reside now. I was from England. I brought with me my Amiga A1200 and everything i owned concerning the Amiga, and always felt at home. However, recently my monitor decided that more than twelve years of service was sufficient, and it died. I am at a lost because i have not been able to play my Amiga games for more than a month now.
Like i said, i found this site, and was delighted to see that Amiga lovers help Amiga lovers, so i am hoping that someone can help. I require a replacement monitor, and i would like to ask, if anyone knows anyone who has one. It would be great if the seller was in the U.S.A, but if i have to shop outside the states, i will consider that.
Thank you, and thank you for being here. Keeping the Amiga alive.

Do you need a PAL capable monitor like an A1084? A SCART multipurpose monitor like a Samsung 940MW? Or have you looked at upgrade solutions for VGA or DVI output?
-
Thank you for your reply.
I really don`t have much knowledge about the monitor i was looking for, but what i can tell you, is that i have a SCART cable that was with the old monitor, and one of the cables fitted very well. Please forgive my ignorance on this matter, and like i said, i think a monitor attached via SCART would be ideal.
Thank you.

Where are you located?

Depending on your budget you may want to look at a product like the Indivision (allows you to hook up any modern monitor to your system). I just got one a few days ago and love it! :)
-
Thank you for that advice.
It seems to be the best bet ( the Indivsion AGA MK2 ), and it just hooks up to a modern day monitor/tv (with SCART).
I watched a Youtube video showing the very easy steps of fitting the Indivision into an Amiga 1200, and it really doesn`t call for much technical work to be done. Probably the only other thing i will need is a t.v with SCART. By the way, if anyone is selling one, you know where i am :).
Thanks again for the help.

Indivision AGA MK 2 doesn't hook up via scart, it works via VGA (not very well at the moment) or DVI.
If you want Scart, just use a cheap RGB to Scart lead (about £8 on ebay).
Indivision AGA 2 is off-sale at the moment though due to the high number of complaints about the lack of config tools for it, 9 months and waiting. :/ It will be great when it eventually arrives, but it's pretty pricey (£100+) if you just want to play a few games of Lemmings. The HiGFX modes are great for workbench though, but a lot of users are finding they have banding on their displays or uncentered screens that go off screen borders, these problems cannot be fixed without the config tool.
-
Okay, so let me ask you this, as i am not technical minded.
What would you suggest for the better? All i do is play games with my Amiga, nothing else. So basically, i just need a monitor, yes?
How would you go about curing this problem, if it was you?
Let me worry about the price. Just show me where to go, and what i need.

If I was u I would just buy a Commodore 1084 RGB monitor. That monitor is the way Amiga games should be played. All Amiga games were designed with that monitor in mind. It has BRILLIANT saturated colors. And the colors are not all screwey like so many LCD monitors. Also the 1084 monitors can flip ALL the pixels on the screen from any color to any color instantly! Most LCD monitors cannot do any such thing! It is futuristic black magic for so-called "modern" monitors.
Also when u use a 1084S there is no delay added to the display. Most so-called "modern" LCD monitors will add a lag to the display. Everything you are seeing on the screen already happened 1 or 2 frames ago. It ruins all games that depend on instant reflexes an pixel perfect precision.
A modern LCD monitor can only display ONE resolution correctly. All others are displayed incorrectly and laggily. A 1084S can display many resolutions correctly. A 1084S is also nice to use with a Dreamcast if u have one.
There was a guy on here a month or 2 ago begging ppl to take his 1084S monitors FOR FREE. Just pay the shipping. I was going to take them since nobody else wanted them. He was going to throw them in the trash if I did not get them. I guess he was getting thrown out of his house or something. I wanted to save them from oblivion. Its stupid to let valuable Perfectly Working monitors get destroyed. But I am horribly ill and I could not reply to his msgs for a while and.... I guess they are destroyed now. I am feeling depressed about the whole thing. :(
If you want an instantaneous high speed gfx, brilliant color monitor then you need a 1084 or there was a Magnavox monitor that was a clone, it was just as good as a 1084 or even a bit better. I gave my Magnavox to my mom and she just threw it away rather than give it back to me. I went to the courthouse and Disowned my mother and have never spoken to her since.
If you are playing a turn-based strategy game such as Total Chaos AGA then the lagginess of LCD monitors does not matter so you could happily use an LCD for that purpose.
If you are playing highly advanced HIRES INTERLACED 640x512 games on your A1200 (such as Total Chaos AGA) then getting a high quality flickerfixer and using a high resolution monitor such as an LCD monitor or a 19" multisync CRT (like I am on right now) would be a good deal for you. I own several CRT monitors that connect to my PC and my A1200+FlickerFixer simultaneously and they support all NTSC and PAL Amiga modes!! And they are CRT monitors so they have instantaneous pixel changing without lag.
The one I am using right this second is a 19" ViewSonic UltraBriteA90f+. I certify this to work with NTSC and PAL modes on a Real Amiga with FlickerFixer. I have other models by other manufacturers in the other room if u really need to know others.
The color on all my 31Khz expensive multisync CRT monitors is not as good as any 1084S. 1084S beats them all in color. 1084S is just lower resolution. But Amiga games ARE low resolution so its great for Amiga gaming.
The only monitors I have ever seen with color as good as a 1084S are: DLP monitors and Plasma monitors.
A Plasma monitor could be a good choice for you as you get great colors and high speed pixel changes but I donno how u would find one that is compatible to PAL mode. Its just stupid to use a monitor for old Amiga games that does not support PAL mode. DO NOT BUY ANY MONITOR FOR AMIGA GAMING THAT HAS SABOTOGED THE PAL MODES TO NOT WORK. SUCH MONITORS ARE A RIPOFF. The PAL modes are supposed to work! If they don't work then they are ripping you off on purpose! Do not give them your money!

You are kidding, right?
-
Sorry to hear about the situation you are in, being ill. I pass my best onto you.
If anyone can shed some light as to wether the guy got rid of all those monitors(looking back at past thread posts), it would help a great deal, as i would certainly take one or two of him.
I browsed the Internet on the advice you gave me, but even on Ebay, these thing`s are getting tough to find.
My email address is available to anyone who comes across a monitor, or has information regarding some useful info (items that are available and can be shipped),, and that will help me out, so that i can start to reuse my beloved Amiga.
Thanks.

I have just spotted this after searchung, was this the guy who had the monitors?

That is not the guy I was talking about. But see, you can find them if you look. :)

Oh and btw, just to be clear:
You can have your 1084S connected on your high-quality crisp FREE 16.7 Million color RGB port of your Amiga 1200 and you can have some other sort of highres monitor connected at the same time for highres interlace desktop publishing or gaming if you add a flickerfixer.
All Amigas easily allow 2 or 3 monitors at the same time.
My A1200T has 1084S on the RGB port, the ViewSonic Multisync 19" on the VGA port and a 17" NEC multisync on the gfx card port (I don't use the gfx card so much). A1200T FTW!
No matter what I throw at my miggy she is there to serve me.

You are kidding, right?
That is exactly what the County Clerk said to me, after everyone had finished laughing at me and then noticed I wasn't smiling.
The picture on that monitor was sooooooo beautiful and vibrant. It was wonderful. I could have just given it to a real human being like thesnapman44 and he would have loved it and taken care of it and fed it a healthy diet of SuperFrog and No Second Prize. He could have inherited it down to his children and his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Remember it was built in the days of proper lead-based solder that does not automatically self destruct.
But instead that sweet innocent beautiful monitor was murdered in the prime of her life.
I paid $330.00 for that monitor brand new. It had a really great tilt/swivel base that made it much better than my 1084S's

Oh you don`t know how much love that monitor would have got lol. It would even be laying in the bed with me, after a hard days gaming, snuggled up with a blanket and cocoa :). I had to read your reply to my thread a few times to make sure what i was reading. I mean, it got threw away. That`s criminal, barbaric, and other words that i can`t think off right now. Excuse me while i leave and sit and weep for her. Sniff.

I contacted the retailer concerning that above mentioned monitor. They informed me it would not be suitable for the Amiga, as it would not be compatible for the OS on the Amiga. Thank you anyway, and hey people, i am still lookinf for a monitor :)

They don't know what they are speaking ... Re the manual it accepts normal video:
Input Signal, Terminated
RGB Analog, DVI(Digital Visual Interface)
Composite Digital RGB, 0.7Vp-p±5%, Positive bright, 75Ω±10%(terminated),
Separate H/V sync, Composite,TTL level, positive or negative
TV / Video
Color system NTSC-M, PAL-M/N, PAL/SECAM - L/L',B/G,D/K,I
Video format S-Video, Composite, Component, Built-in-Tuner, PIP

I would do your own research on this. A lot of "tech support staff" for companies are fairly useless when it comes to Amiga questions. They haven't a clue what an Amiga is and just give an automatic answer of "unsupported". Study the monitors specs and determine if its compatible for yourself.
Besides, Amiga "OS" has little to do with whether or not the monitor is supported. If the monitor supports standard PAL / NTSC scan rates, then it should work, provided you are using the correct connectors.
-
This may well be the final question on this matter, so if there is someone who really is into the tech stuff regarding the Amiga and it`s compatible monitor/s. i would be grateful:
Will a 60 Hertz t.v work with the Amiga 1200?

Assuming that by 60Hz, you mean NTSC, then yes, it normally would, using the A1200's composite output connector. Not as sharp as a real RGB monitor, but good enough for games.
BUT....haven't you got a PAL Amiga that you dragged over from the UK? In that case, I'm not sure, as the composite output might only be in PAL format (50Hz). I know the Amiga can output PAL / NTSC on its RGB port, but I'm not sure if the composite connector is switchable (I don't have an A1200).

Oh for heavens sake !!!! I completely forgot about the Amiga being PAL (as it was nicely put, i DRAGGED it to the States) rofl. I am so glad that you pointed that out Rai-Clan. Top marks for that and give them a medal lol.
I am going to leave this particular thread alone now, but just to say, if any one has any definite information on anyone who has an Amiga Monitor, (anywhere), email me and catch my attention immediately by putting something like Got One !!!! in the subject line lol.
All of you have been great at giving me information on this subject, and i thank you all.

I will say this again, "Do you want to invest in an upgrade solution -- meaning DVI or VGA output?" Or stay with your Amiga native RGB 15KHz output?

What specs? It says nothing useful.
Does it work with PAL? Does it work with NTSC? Does it work with a 31.5Khz signal? Does it work with a 15.75khz signal? ? What resolutions does it accept? Lots of so-called "modern" monitors ban many of the Amiga's video modes from working.
If the specs are not listed it is safe to assume "junk".
The monitor in that listing can safely be assumed to not work with your Amiga unless you have a flickerfixer. If you have a flickerfixer then you get a 25% chance of it working based on the info in Ebay listing. If you read the actual instruction manual then the odds would change.
In case you got confused, that ViewSonic is 100% different from my ViewSonic that I am using. Mine is a CRT monitor (big thick screen). Also my ViewSonic only works on my FlickerFixer port so far as I know. I never tested it to see if it was 15.75Khz compatible because 99.99% of monitors made since late 90s are not 15.75Khz compatible.

Then buy the Samsung 940MW. it has SCART input and will handle NTSC and PAL plus more advanced signals. An Amiga 23-pin RGB to SCART cable runs $20 from Amigakit.com.

DANBEAVER, i owe you I think now that my search is over.
I may appear to be as dumb as a tree, but believe me, it`s no act. I really don`t know anything about the technical side of the Amiga, and all it`s hardware issues, and that is why i rely entirely on sites like this, and people like you. I know others would say that`s not wise, but i know for definIte that if i am going to buy an item like the Samsung 940MW and people on a site like this think it`s a waste, they wouldn`t hesitate to say so.
My thanks to everyone who replied to this thread, and had the patience to put up with my questions and probably repeating their answers over and over again.
Probably dumb is not the right description for me, but deninitely ignorant, and i should know more about the machine.
Thank you everyone.

you need what i need , I ask same question on lot's of forum and every user have has his theory , best choice of normal monitor is 1084s or 1085s , if you wish LCD i buy last week on ebay.co.uk only monitor who have 100% great picture with amiga's : samsung syncmaster 741mp 17" 4:3 (have scart and everything you need) , probably there is some other model who is good with amiga's but 741mp is tested and everyone who have it told me that picture is great

snapman
Just want to add that if you use the composite video out on your PAl a1200 it will only display BLACK and WHITE on NTSC displays!
Commodore monitors for the most part display PAL and NTSC.
You may also want to look into NEC brand "3d" series from the 90s. They work with amigas.

Yoy are right about them being plentiful in England. I browsed the Internet and Ebay for a couple of hours, and some of the 741`s are even free if you go and pick them up yourself. I have seen two or three on Ebay that are in the States, and the shipping costs isn`t that too bad. (what i would normally expect), so i may get one of the 741`s that are advertised. Thank you.

For anyone who is interested, and may also be looking for a monitor like me, or may want to purchase one just in case, please click/paste the following link.

Well, i have an idea for you. If you need something like that, don`t worry, where there is a way, there is a will. Firstly, save your money, and don`t eat !!!. Drink tap water and no fancy stuff, and let those bills worry about themselves. What`s the worse that can happen? At lease you will be able to buy what you need off Ebay and afford the shipping costs!!! Life is so simple when you think long and hard :)

lol , if i buying something what have value it's no problem to pay shipping , but if i need this monitor who cost 13GBP you don't think that 46GBP is problem for monitor like that , i pay that shipping because i need this monitor , but it's problem for me to pay every stuff what i buy 2 or 3 times more for shipping that that stuff have value ...
and in US you can buy monitor you wish you have lot's of on ebay but i can't shipping for 1084s or 1702 cost too much ... so you have big choice and i don't have , that's the point of my post's
