Title: Remove 30-pin SIMM's in GVP Series II A500 drive?
Post by: Oldsmobile_Mike on January 23, 2013, 08:59:29 AM
Got my new drive today, found the hack to solder the two sets of pads together to make it run off the A500 PSU (so disregard all my previous posts about needing a power supply for it), fired it up, working great, only other thing I want to do to it now is upgrade the 2 MB of memory it came with to a matching set of 4 x 1MB SIMM's I got off Ebay for $10, but can't figure out how to get the blasted two that are currently in there out?  They're not like any memory modules I've seen before, and I don't want to damage anything trying to get them out.

Any tips?

Or should I just leave them, and add two of my new ones?  I'm just really OCD and would prefer to use the matching set, LOL.  :)

Looks like you need to slightly push the hooks out of the holes and then - carefully - just pull them out. Don't force it or twist it.

FYI, for anyone who comes across this post in the future, I was able to get the memory chips out but it was a right royal @#$)(.  Had to use two screwdrivers and a small 90-degree pick.  Lever one small screwdriver behind the memory chip I was trying to remove and against the chip behind it, while using the pick to reach in from behind the chip and push the little clip down, while using a larger screwdriver to "twist" at the bottom of the chip, between it and the socket, to rotate each edge out.  Like in this picture, I would be rotating the large screwdriver clockwise to lift that edge out of the socket.

In other words, it is possible to do this without damaging the socket, but what a PITA!  :-/

They look pretty similar to PC ones of the time, there is a knack. Once you've seen them go in it probably makes more sense how to get them out. Pretty sure you should be able to do it using your fingers.
