Title: NEC MultiSync LCD 1770NX monitor
Post by: AmigaBruno on January 12, 2013, 02:49:56 AM
I thought I should ask if my NEC MultiSync LCD 1770NX monitor would be compatible with the Amiga range of computers. I'm not sure what would or wouldn't make it compatible. It has both VGA and DVI inputs.

http://www.paragonprojection.co.uk/specifications_lcd/nec_multisync_lcd1770nx_specifications.html

I've recently read that older dedicated monitors like the Commodore 1084S and Philips 8833 are probably on their last legs and would soon blow out if I bought one.

Horizontal Frequency    31.5 -81.0kHz

It would not sync with the 15khz modes...

I'm afraid I don't know what these modes are, but I suspect they may be the modes that have existed as from the OCS, rather than the ECS and AGA chipsets. I've recently been getting back into Deluxe Paint III on a PAL Amiga A500 Plus. The screen modes available are 320x256 with 32 or 16 colours (or less), and 640x256 colours with 16 colours (or less), as well as the same screen modes but with EHB. Of course, I could also limit the modes to 200 (NTSC) on the vertical axis. Could I use any or all of these modes with the NEC MultiSync LCD 1770NX monitor? If not, then I'd better stop bidding for an adaptor on eBay.

In a word, NO! Not unless you add a scan doubler/flicker fixer.
The last NEC I know of that could sync to the Amiga was the CRT, Multisync 3D.
Hope this helps...

Standard Amiga output is 15 kHz. Unless your monitor can handle that your out of luck. Some monitors will handle it but don't list it in their specs. My Dell ST2320L works, but doesn't list 15 kHz as being supported. There's a thread here somewhere which lists a number of monitors that will work.

I have the NEC 1970NX, which seems to be the 19-inch variant of yours, and it IS compatible - well sort of.

All PAL (15khz) resolutions work through the VGA input, BUT the bottom 15-odd pixels are chopped off. I posted some pics on the thread about the new DELL monitors. I find it OK for the occasional game, and use workbench with either DBLPAL or MULTISCAN monitor in DEVS.

I guess the only way to know for sure is to try your monitor out with an amiga. All you'll need is a 23-pin RGB to 15-pin VGA adapter. AmigaKit may stock them, otherwise Amibay and ebay are your next calls.

Where are you from? IF you are from Europe, prety much every LCD-TV works with scart. You would also get nice flicker free hires modes

Great! Since reading this, I've had a successful eBay auction on a suitable adapter, although I didn't increase my bid. I can now look forward to using Deluxe Paint on my LCD monitor. I hope I won't need the bottom 15 odd pixels. Yesterday at the Amiga North Thames meeting, I was using Deluxe Paint on a 1085S monitor, but I couldn't manage to display the whole width of the picture on the screen, although it was possible to move it horizontally with a monitor control on the front. Perhaps there was a width control which had been hidden somewhere.

Found the link to the pictures I posted on the other thread - here it is:

Hope your works too! If not look on ebay for a second hand of one of the Dell, Benq or NECs known to work. The NECs tend to go for cheap.

My Amiga RGB to VGA adaptor arrived today. Unfortunately, when I plugged in and turned the Amiga on, the monitor lit up and showed the message "input out of range"! I pressed all the controls, but nothing happened. I couldn't even get a menu to appear on the screen. I suppose this shows that the monitor isn't compatible. I'm puzzled by not even being able to get a menu to come up, though.

I'll remember that if I ever use that monitor again.

There are none of that particular type of monitor from the other thread currently for sale on eBay. I think I read somewhere that ANY CRT VGA monitor would work. Is that true?

No, a lot of CRT VGA monitors won't sync down to 15khz either.

Fixed that for you.
