Title: Portable Amiga gaming
Post by: TheMagicM on January 10, 2013, 12:33:28 AM
So I picked up a tablet for very cheap ($140), an Asus SL-101, 10.1" display, bluetooth, running Android 4.0.3.  I bought it for reading programming stuff, PDFs, email, managing servers, retro gaming and all that nerd stuff.  One of the biggest reasons was that it was powerful enough to play "Amiga 500" type games.

One of the cool things about it is that this has a built in USB port and a slide away keyboard.  Speed wise, its perfect to take to the coffee shop, ssh into servers to do work, some RDP type stuff assuming the connection is fast.  Internet browsing is great, Adobe Flash works.

Drawbacks, mono speaker (just 1 speaker), so its not super loud, so bring headphones.

Retro gaming..

I am using UAE4Droid and USB/BT joystick.  The latter is required to use USB joysticks under Android.  It makes it "somewhat easier" to use one if its automatically recognized and has a driver for it, otherwise you have to make your own driver and its confusing.  Right now I'm using a XBOX 360 wired controller and it works out of the box.

UAE4Droid, to use a joystick with it, you'll have to map the fire button and movement keys in the app, but its very simple.

Speed wise under UAE4Droid, it works at about the speed of an Amiga 500.  Some games are too fast like Sidewinder.  If you want to play a game that requires a mouse like StarGlider II, its a no go.  The tablet recognizes the mouse but I cant get it to work under UAE4Droid, its as if its not available under emulation to the app.  Sound emulation is almost exact.  I havent had any noticeable games that sound different than original, but I've only tried about 5 or so.  If you have a specific game you want me to try, just reply.  If I have it (I might), just lmk in the thread.

Graphics quality are the same as an Amiga 500.  Sometimes, like in Strider, I might see an artifact.

I have Frodo on it, so that'll be the next thing I play with.  It has way more than enough power for C64 games.

Here's a pic of a Strider and Magic Pockets running on it:

There is another Amiga emulator that has good reviews on Google play, it's called Omega 500.
I have tried it with Turrican and it seems to play very well.

I have tried uae4droid on a few devices. Best so far has been my HTC one x. On the cheaper droid devices I found the RAM to be piss poor. Not so much the amount but the speed. This might be a factor.

That tablet has 16 or 32 GB of storage space onboard.  1 GB RAM.

It's a nice little tablet for the price but drags ass pretty hard if you update to a more modern OS like ICS.

Sorry...my bad.  You two are correct.  1gb user ram.

The RAM on that tablet would make the UAE experience a lot better.  A lot of the cheaper Android tablets and phones are just sort of bodge jobs of hacked together bits of kit, but Asus actually makes a pretty good product.

I use UAE4Droid on my Samsung Galaxy S3 (unlocked, world phone, quad core, 2 GB RAM) and it runs like a champ.

I am still trying to get the two different versions of puae to work on android puae-sdl and droidpuae, droidpuae has no gui and complains that there is no config file present, which i have no clue how to create, there is no info on the apps site, i was going to try a config from the desktop version at some point.

I had a blast playing miggy games on the sony ericsson xperia play since it has buttons already :) Sold the Xperia play a few months back and regret it a bit :/ Not the fastest machine on the block but decent enough and the DPAD+buttons was a dealbreaker when I bought it. (the analog thingy pads that are touch sensitive is rubbish tho).
Not my image, it's from google.

Now I have an Samsung galaxy S2 the 4G one with 2GB ram, fast machine but I miss hardware keys, no more phones without qwerty for me :/

Umm...no dragging of ass here.  I'm running 4.0.3 and it runs excellent :-)
