What is the absolute smallest software to transfer files using the Zmodem protocol or similar error checking and resending protocol for the A500 ..?
The idea would be to do "cat SER: (http://www.etheus.net/Amiga_Data_Cable) > term ; protect (http://www.jaruzel.com/projects/AmigaDOS-Guide-Help/PROTECT.html) term +re ; ./term" to transfer something more suitable like NComm. Which in turn can transfer larger quantities etc. A kind of bootstrapping.

I donno the answer but I bet there is a tiny one on Aminet somewhere.

I don't know either.
Have you searched the terminal section of aminet?
I remember a cool program named ACCESS! I think it might predate Zmodem (had X or Y modem protocol?). I remember it booting from a single disk with most of Workbench on it.

I think I had a terminal program from aminet called azcomm that was only around 16KB

Why do you think that NComm is not suitable?
If the other computer is a PC, Amiga Explorer might be an option.

You can use kermit. It´s many not the smallest but good. And there is good os support
