Title: Upgrading 3.9 FFS to a SFS file system?
Post by: Acill on January 26, 2004, 01:05:29 PM
Well I got my system back to wher eI had it before the format. Things are runing great and more stable then I could remember. I'd like to try out SFS but I stalled using the standard FFS on the 3.9 CD. Is it possable to upgrade my system to SFS and not loose anything on the hard drive? If so can someone tell me the process of doing this?

My guess would be that unless SFS has a program to do some kind of conversion (like NT versions of Windows do to change FAT32 to NTFS) the answer is no.

In any event, before doing something like that you'd be wise to back up all the data first. It might be as well just to mirror the drive somehow (second HD?), reformat it with SFS and then shift your setup back over.

You cannot convert FFS to SFS without data loss. But as you probably have several partitions, this should not be a big problem.

First create a boot disk (emergency floppy or something like that) and make sure it really works.

Then copy all files from your boot partition to another one. Make sure that really everything is copied (use the Shell or any directory tool like DirOpus). Then install SFS on the HDD using HDtoolbox and change the dostype of your boot partition to SFS. Make sure that your don't touch any other partition but the one to be converted. Reboot with the boot floppy and copy everything back. That's it.

Do the same for every other partition you want to convert.

It might be handy to have a second boot partition instead of the boot floppy because things are faster then.

Bye,
Thomas

Well, I can't get more than 1 SFS partition, either HD or ZIP, running without disabling the other(s).  :-(
