Title: How to install Deluxe Paint (orig) on a HD?
Post by: blakespot on December 30, 2012, 03:27:21 PM
I have tried different approaches -- different ASSIGNs, etc. Nothing works. I have the original Deluxe Paint floppy and can't get it to run, loaded onto floppy.

I see there is a small dpaint file in the root dir, then a dpaint.data in the c/ directory. Tried assigning the target HD dir to DeluxePaint: etc. -- nothing.

Ideas?

Is this DPaint 1 you're using? DPaint 4 has a HD installer, maybe v2 and v3 do as well, if you have access to those.

Does it give you any error messages? Try
Code: [Select]
copy df0:#? dhx:[your dpaint directory] all clone from a CLI to catch any files that don't show up from the Workbench interface (since 1.3 doesn't have a "Show all files" option). I think you can get the same result by dragging the disk icon to your directory of choice.

EDIT: I just had a look at the reference card at DLH's site (http://www.bombjack.org/commodore/amiga/applications/). It mentions Kickstart 1.1, so it might be one of those very early programs that can't even handle 1.3.

Do you get a "please insert volume xxx:" requester when trying to launch from HD? I think dpaint II used a simple dpaint assign but I'm not sure.

This is DPaint 1. It runs fine off floppy under KS 1.3.

No errors. When I run it, disk accesses an instant then nothing. I run from CLI. There is no icon (.info).

I'm sure I had a similar problem with Deluxe Paint 3 on my old A1200, and IIRC it turned out that I needed to reduce the Max Transfer Rate for the partition in HD Toolbox before installing it - this is going back years though so I can't remember for sure!

I can run all kinds of things off this partition. Have had no general issues like that. It seems unlikely that something about the DPaint executables would require a different partition configuration wrt: MaxTransferRate, right?

I remember that it was only DPaint and Star Trek 25th Anniversary that gave me problems until I changed the Max Transfer Rate - everything else ran fine. It might be worth trying if all else fails :-)

So, downloaded DPaint 1 from Planetemu, extracted it to my Amigakit 3.9 RAD: device and doubleclicked dpaint - it seemed to work without any assigns. And no problems with 3.x kickstart so far. But I didn't do any more extensive tests - it seemed to paint with the tools I tried. Btw, it seems to be on Back2Roots, too.

Looking at the DPaint 2 reference card, it says to make a working copy of the disk, but that the original is still required for copy-protection purposes (!) every time you start the program. Maybe DPaint 1 has some similar mechanism, and the versions kicking around the web are cracked.

Your original DPaint disk may be looking for its files from the root of the volume the program was run from. If this is the case then an Assign command is futile in such cases. This is fine when running from floppy, but no good for a hard disk install (unless you don't mind all contents of the root of the DPaint floppy being in the root of of your DH0: or whatever your hard disk is called.
Instead of copying the DPaint disk contents to your hard disk root to test this theory, a workaround would be to mount a virtual floppy disk and copy the whole disk contents over to the virtual floppy, exactly as the DPaint disk. Infact, as it will be a virtual floppy you can just issue a diskcopy command. Oh, you could also mount a RAD disk instead of the virtual floppy! I should have thought of this first as it's easier!

That's what I've done to test in UAE/Amikit. First into RAD: and now copied onto HD. Seems to work - but phew that clumsy interface in 1.x software. Too accustomed to directory trees and easy going up and down there. Anyway I could load and save a Tut pic onto my HD.
