I have done one show of ren and stimpy converted to run on classic Amiga AGA. It should theoretically run at frame rate of 20 per second on an Amiga 1200/4000 030+ but I have not found my Amiga classic yet to try it out. Anyone is interested in trying the show for me on their Amiga classic and returning me back some feedback?
The size of the file is 795 MB in size. I need the following feedback about my work:
1) Quality of the video
2) Quality of the sound
3) Speed of the animation
there was an error at the end of the conversion of to hv at the LAST LAST LAST end, so the last 4 seconds was not completed. But hopefully for the rest of them it should not be the case...this is after all my first attempt. Personally I am proud of my work :D and I finally can watch one episode of ren and stimpy on my A1200 when I find her between all these boxes.
I could check for the audio on my WinUAE but I cannot because my PC's internal sound CHIP died and no sound output is coming from my PC. IN a month or so, I should order a USB sound card to resolve this problem.
If anyone is interested please send me their FTP client info so I can upload it, after all it is 700+ MB in size.
Thanks for your input :) Hopefully if you guys are happy I should be able to do all the ren and stimpy tv show converted for the classic Amiga, then do all duckman episode, then do all family guy and american dad. When I am done with all of these shows I will work on my movies at my HD and start working on the tv show prison break and so forth...but before I even start doing this tedious work...I need your input on this file that I have done. Anyone have an FTP client where I can upload this will be great.

Well, if you're going to go this route, I'd use usenet to upload them to. Cool idea. It would be kind of trippy watching modern shows on a classic Amiga.

Because I lowered the fps from it's original speed to make it smooth on classic Amiga the audio was still relying on the 25 fps (managed to get the audio on my PC working again). So what end up happening the audio is faster than the animation/picture. I am going to redo this again with it's original speed setting first then upload it and ask someone to test it for me on their original Amiga. If it works with good speed then I will repeat the same configuration for the rest of them.

I did it! I got the speed of animation working with the audio and running on an A1200 14 Mhz at speed of 25 fps. But again this is in WinUAE it may be inaccurate all together. I am going to post a demo here to be downloaded and I need someone out there to test it for me please. Just tell me if this split second of viewing on their real A1200 comes out with good speed and good audio. Your support in testing and helping me figure out the best configuration makes it possible and easier for me to get movies into classic Amiga.
Hehehe, I may even consider getting Jerry Springer there lol.
The link to download the demo is locate here: http://www.mediafire.com/?op9z1euit58v59f

Would like to give this a try on mu 030 miggy but don't know how to play the file. Can't find hamp.run anywhere! Any suggestions would be grea!

There you have it. Please tell me what you think?
If it works great as I hoped I will send you the full version of ren and stimpy episode ones it is done...it is already reached 237 MB in conversion..ones it reaches 870 or a little bit more MB it should be possible to send you the new URL link to download it. I was doing my calculation as I was walking to the mall and I calculated that a 2 hour movie in hv would be 10 GB. Well, that is not so bad. It is like blue ray disc. So if you have USB and an external blue ray disc you can put 5 of 2 hours movies in one disc and enjoy movies on classic Amiga. I think it is working as I am hoping but before I am positive please Havie try this demo out for me and tell me what is the result with your real Amiga. If it plays at 25 fps on 30 Amiga then ALL AMIGA USERS can enjoy this experience..no need for 060 anymore!! Let us pray for the best.

I tried the DemoREN file and it plays fine in my A1200 030 50Mhz, I also noticed that it has stereo. I have few PSB music videos that I converted, but I made my sound mono, to shrink the file size a bit.

Wwwwoooooooooohooooooooooooo!!!! THAT IS THE GREATEST NEWS I HAVE EVER HEARD!!! Thank you soo much!!!!
I am going to start CONVERTING MOVIES AND MOVIES AND MOVIES and TV SHOWS AND TV SHOWS AND TV shows...FINALLY AMIGA CLASSIC USERS get to enjoy movies hehehhe!!
I am going to be turning my A1200 into the FATTEST media center possible. Not only would i listen to mp3, but watch movies, play games, chat online on my A1200 desktop...yaappiiee!!
-
For cartoons, you could probably lower the FPS and you wouldn't notice the difference. Also, I wonder if is possible to do any pre-processing to reduce the colors in the original video file to reduce the dithering.
When converting my files, I noticed that if less mpg artifacts are present in the original file the better the conversion will look like.
It would be nice if someone made a script to automate the conversion process.

I've got classicWB 3.1, do I need any particular software installed to give this a try?

It is 5:24 PM and I have made 600 MB so 200 MB to go and the complete ren and stimpy is done. Does anybody have an ftp server or something where I can put all my work on it? I am afraid to use my own personal computer in fears of someone hacking my system and I do not want to pay monthly for a storage area. If someone could help in just providing a space where I can upload the movies and shows and people then can download them at their leisure to watch movies in classic Amiga. If you guys want to donate for my work it is appreciate it but you do not have too...I am doing this for free completely 100% and I want to share the joy of watching videos on classic Amiga with others. :)
Enjoy! By the end of today hopefully I will have completed the first episode of ren and stimpy and I will ounces it here.
-
It is finished!! I finished my first ren and stimpy conversion to Amiga format. If anyone is interested please tell me so I can send it to you :)
I am working on the second one now :) Ones I finish all the ren and stimpy series I will move to family guys, followed duckman, followed american dad :)

I have issue with getting the fps of the animation to sync with audio. The first tv show worked great but any other tv show where the fps must have decimal on it to match the audio sync it does not work correctly ones I use the program avi4hv conversion. It somehow does rounding and the result case the audio is either behind the animation or the animation is a little faster than the audio so when the conversion goes incomplete, breaks half way and I have animation and audio not synched at all.
Is there a program or something I can do to make sure the file.avi and the file.wav are synch ones I use the avi4hv program? Also there is a lot of dithering going own and it is very annoying how do I reduce it?
Thanks in advance.
-
Remember, be careful when you drop the framerate of stuff recorded from VHS (if that's your source): VHS displays in fields per second but most animation is done at 8-10 frames per second. Dropping the display framerate can lead to jerkier animation than you'd think...

That is not my issue. My issue is getting the frame rate to synch with the audio when I do avi4hv. I am unable to get any other show converted for Amiga classic after I have done the first one. It is because if there are frame rate like 28.837 avi4hv turn it into 29 or 28. This little difference of 0.837 causes an error in conversion and there is a little obvious unsync between animation and audio. So I am wondering if there is away to resolve this in the windows side when I save the audio as .wav and the video as .avi and I combine them together with avi4hv that they are synched together and it continues with conversion and does not stop at 800 MB with an error.
That is my problem. Anyone who have faced the same problem but resolved it, I would love your help in this regard so I can continue my work.
Thanks in advance.

Works great on my 1200T 060, will dump it over to the 030 8mb later and try it there tonight. Probably using something OTHER than a null-modem (have PCMCIA ethernet NIC & FTP client/server on both :D )

Well I have gotten the second episode of ren and stimpy completed. I am going to be working on the third one soon. However, I do not have a place to host them up. I do not have a place where people can simply download them and run them on their classic Amiga, so far only I have them.

To fix your audio / video sync problem, try to convert the video to 320x200 (or whatever you need) with 15/20fps with audio intact. I use "Any Video Converter" for that.
Then I strip/convert the audio with VirtuaDub to wav and then I convert the video to 15Bit RGB.
See if that works.
To see if your video is in sync with audio, open them in any player and compare times.

The problem with forcing ftp to 15 or 20 fps (by the way the two shows I have gotten working in good speed with real classic Amiga, their ftps are higher than 20 fps, some of them 30 fps), is that in some cases it is completely out of synch between audio and animation. Whe nI use VirtuaDub it says in order to have fps synch with audio you need to use 24.998 or in some cases 23.782, depending on the actual video. So I enter these numbers in frame rate setting myself, I disable audio, save mp3, convert mp3 to 8 bit, save it as wav, set rgb to 15 bit, save as a new avi file, rename it as ren.avi and ren.wav, use avi4hv, it says do you want to use fps 24 (which is not 23.782 or 23.9998), I say yes...and continue from there.
Now I just wish the actual program avi4hv itself does use float instead of int when it comes to fps. However, I got two ren and stimpy working correctly so I am happy...I think (I may be wrong) got the hang of working around this...I am not so sure myself. I will do another one now...and if it works as I hoped then I will post an update here saying I have managed to get it working 100% and should easily be finishing off ren and stimpy series to move on to family guys, then american dad and whatever tv show I have (prison break, etc) before moving on to movies.
Then I will burn all my work on blue ray disc. However, I still have issue sharing it with you guys...maybe you guys could help me get in torrent so you guys could download it in torrent program (I use utorrent myself in Windows). I just do not know how to share it in p2p in torrent community. If someone can give me a tutorial it will be great.
But...I have another problem and that is the quality of the video and dithering issue...it is some what low end quality, I kind of want it to make it better quality than this....can someone give me tutorial in how to improve my work? I will not of course redo the previous work..what is done is done..but for future work I would love to do them better.

Dont use dithering, it makes things worse. Try to use source file with a least "blocking" artifacts.
For me, its nice to watch movies/shows on Amiga, but is not very practical, the quality is not there, but is fun and challenging making it work.
One time, I'll try to see if it works on my CDTV at 7MHz!

Good work, I'll give this a try when I recieve my new PCMCIA network card as transferring the file over serial from a PC will take way to long. Will be interesting to see the performance on a stock A1200 with 4MB fast.

I'm working on it, I have like over 200 plug ins for Virtualdub.
Looks like when converting from 24bits to 16bits there is a visible color reduction. I'm looking right now to see which filter is best for our purpose. It's been awhile since I converted videos to HV.

Thank you so much for your help!! I want to be able to make sure the quality of my movie converted to be of high quality. I am more than excited to start converting the other stuff in good quality...I need to start buying 50 GB blue ray disc as it will drain hugely from my HD or better yet get an external 1 TB HD instead and store everything in there :).
Weeeeeeeeee I am so excited..finally Amiga classic users can enjoy movies heheheheh

Ok, I think I found something.
Use this filter called "Error diffusion" found here: http://whitewing.co.uk/vdub_errdiff.html
I was pretty happy with the output with a cartoon I had on my HD, the movie looked like a HAM animation considering the limitations on HAM, and much better then the dithering option included in HV converter.
I also use directshow plugin, so you can open any file, if you have correct codecs installed on your PC: http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/286901-VirtualDub-Now-Has-a-Directshow-Driver-Plugin
The HV files are quite big 200MB for 4 min video, but is fun making it.

Thank you so much for your help and providing me links as well :)
I am curious you said for 4 minutes it would become 200 MB does that mean if the movie is 60 minutes long it will become 12 GB? So if I have a movie that is 2 hours long it will become 24 GB? So in away, this process will turn a normal DVD movie as a blue ray movie for Amiga (but it is not) in terms of size?
I am going to use your method now for my third ren and stimpy and I am hoping the quality will be improving dramatically. I also have laurel and hardy tv show (black and quite) but the sound is not stereo quality so for those movies I will make the sound mono to shrink the size of the file a little bit. That means classic Amiga users get to enjoy seeing their power LED dimmed or turned off for certain shows/movies hehe.
Concerning the size of the movie I am ok with that but the person who is going to download them from me have to be willing to download large files to watch those movies or tv shows in their Amiga.
-
If you want to distribute your movies, try to compress them with zip. I was able to shrink the movie from 270MB to 85M zipped.
Don't try to unzip them in your Amiga, it took me 40 min to unzip that file on 68030 50MHz.
There is also AGA HAM8 version of the HV converter, but it seems alot slower playback then the original HAM6.

As you can see I am a programmer myself :) (I even made an Amiga classic game and working on making a new one) I was wondering if you can fix it please so it can accept decimal or float! By doing that you would make movie conversion perfect AND solve all my problem...please??

Is there any way you could modify the program to use the same dithering process used by HAM32k? that would look amazing for movies.

Not going to work, because that method needs twice the amount of data per frame.
-

Really? Why is that? As I understand, it utilizes a standard interlaced HAM screen. What are the implications of needing more data per frame?
-

It does use interlace. It duplicates each line of pixels in the image, and the duplicate line is slightly altered to cause the dithering effect.
While not literally impossible, it doubles the bandwidth needed to play the video. This will result in either the low end Amigas not being able to play the video properly, or the user having to make very low frame rate videos.
It's a pity, because that HAM32K program works quite well.

No problem, at first I wasn't too happy with the quality, but with this filter, it made videos look much better.
I'm still looking for another filter that reduces the colors that could be perfect for cartoons.

Well, I changed it to be more accurate. But because it uses a fixed number of audio samples to go with each frame there can still be problems. In the AVI file, video timing is given as microseconds per frame, and audio timing is (integer) samples per second. This needs to be turned into an even number of audio bytes for Paula to playback. If microseconds * samplerate is exactly divisible by 2000000 then the relative timing will be exactly right. If not, audio and video will gradually diverge.

You are right about that. Eventually video and audio start to be apart as it kept playing...at first it was 100% then the longer the video playing it became gradually the difference between audio and video more apparent. The show was only 11 minute...so if it was a long movie it could be possible it would worsen in difference between audio and video. THE QUALITY of my fourth ren and stimpy is superb, the audio quality is also superb and the conversion is way faster and better allowing me to convert 10 tv shows or movies in one night instead of the old ways where I was only able to do one tv show for a whole complete day. However, there is still the issue with audio and video timing problem as you indicated.
Do you have any advice to resolve this issue? I would like to redo ren and stimpy the fourth one without having this problem with audio and video going out of synch gradually.
-
I would try using 16fps and 16000hz audio. Or 20fps and 20000hz, or 25fps and 12500hz, etc.
25fps=40000us
*12500hz=500,000,000
which divides evenly by 2000000 so I think it will stay in sync (but I have not tested super long videos due to lack of disk space on my laptop...)

I just want to confirm...is it 12500 or 125000? I am doing it again now with the setting of 12500 and 25 fps. If this goes well if this actually works...WOW you have literally helped me solve all my problem. With these settings I can finish my work :)
IT WORKS!! IT WORKS!! YOU ARE A WALKING GENIUS MAN, WALKING GENIUS!! You did it!!! It says video/audio timing accuracy: 100% Now I can do it FOR ALL MY VIDEOS and never worry again!! I am going to do 5 ren and stimpies in one shot converting!! :) Ones these are finished I will upload my work on a rar file for download here..so people can start enjoy watching them..sorry for the old ones they where my first attempt so the quality and timing accuracy is not as good as the newer ones..but hey..I learned from my mistakes and worked in optimizing my work, that's thanks to DamageX and for the rest of the people helping me achieve my goal. Thank you guys for everything!
UPDATED NOTE:
Sorry, I was wrong :( it did not work. It showed in the avi4hv conversion that they are matched and timed 100% when I played it on the hamp.run on the actual Amiga there is like 20 seconds difference between video and audio. Just to give you a heads up the original fps of the video before I slowed it down was was 29.970 fps and I changed it to 25.0000. By doing that the video is way, way, way slower than the audio ones I run it on ren.hv on the Amiga side. What if I wanted to keep it as 29.970 fps what would be then the audio side to match it with that fps or what recommendation you have? :)
-
I slowed it down was was 29.970 fps and I changed it to 25.0000. By doing that the video is way, way, way slower
yeah you don`t want to slow it down but rather add or remove frames to achieve the desired rate, make sure you are using the right option in virtualdub
(http://www.hyakushiki.net/misc/vdub.png)
For 29.97fps you can try resampling the audio to 11988hz. It should be close enough that it would only lose 1 second at the end of a video that is 30 hours long ;)
