Title: Dragons Lair WHDLoad won't run.
Post by: matt3k on December 13, 2012, 01:01:05 PM
Recently bought Dragons Lair and installed via WHDLoad.  It installs without any issues, but when it runs  WHDLoad goes through the splash screens and reboots as normal.  Then it goes to a grey screen and doesn't continue.  Sometimes a green screen appears first and then proceeds to the grey.

I have played with nocache, ntsc, and other settings in WHDLoad, with no success.

My system is a A3000, 3.1, 68040, Cybergrapx 4.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the idea, but I tried on a stock 030 a3000 just to be sure.

Same identical issue on a stock 3k with 3.1(3.9) and 16mb ram.

wait isn't a green screen something to do with the chip ram?

Not sure that is the case here.  Tried 2 different 3000d's and both work fine with other WHDLoad games.

The Green screen comes up prior if I play with the WHDLoad settings.  If I don't touch any of the settings it goes right to the grey screen.

Fair enough. I was spitballing with it and my thoughts were that some of the settings where causing something in the chip ram to spaz out. It might have been completely nuts but I figured it was worth a shot lol. :-)

Thanks for the idea Crit, truly appreciated.

Have a feeling the WHDLoad file install is bad.  I found reference to this not working in my searches.  Will have to contact the author and see if there is hope.

Again thanks for the help!

Where did you get your Dragons Lair WHDload images from?

Try a re-install using the original disks and latest slave?

Check all the WHDload options set in the ICON. Possibly take one or two out or add one or two in according to the WHDload manual (PRELOAD, NoMMU, NoCache etc.)

Hi Alex,

I bought the original boxed game from an old Amiga user and I used the dragons lair for the WHDLoad.de website: http://www.whdload.de/games/DragonsLair.html by CFOU!.

I tried playing with the the settings, I will try again with some more to see if it works...

Since the dragon's lair install is quite old, you could check if it works with an older version from http://www.whdload.de/whdload/old-whdload/

I agree. WHDLoad 17.0 and 17.1 has broken compatibilty with a number of games unfortunately.

Thanks Lizard and Paul.

I tried 16.8 by copying over files over 17.1.  It doesn't give errors it just start to load and goes back to workbench (after the splash screen and a black screen, like a normal load).

Tried all the switched, novbrmove gave a green screen all other ones went back to workbench.

Should I try a older whdload?

Generally speaking, whenever I have a compatibility problem it is usually my gfx card.  Have u tried disabling yours?

I have no gfx card in my A3000.   I have only tried a few WHDload games years ago on my A3000.  Not a single one worked.  They all crashed fairly soon, like <6 mins of gameplay.

Its just a plain old A3000.  One of the original ones with the ROMtower.

Regular games usually work.  Its a great games machine.  Its just WHDload games that never seem to work.  Oh well.

I've just tried running this WHDLoad game on my A600 and I just get the green screen and nothing else.
My A600 spec is KS2/WB2/68000/2MB CHIP/2MB PCMCIA FAST.
There have been no updates to this slave either since 2005. There's definitely a problem with it, but then again my copy is from the KG package, so I haven't actually tried installing from the original disks.

awh yes.. 3.1 roms and from the kg pack as well... 030/25  .. maybe motherboard revisions have some impact? Most whdload games work.

Thanks for all the help.

I tried removing the picasso monitor and boot to standard ecs.  It now behaves differently, after the whdload splash screen it goes to a gray screen and not back to workbench.  Unfortunately it doesn't go further...

Now I know it works on a 3000D, so there is hope.  Will try a different version of WHDLoad, the same one that Lost had success and see what happens.

Paul, for me the green screen is because of the NOVBRMOVE command.  Do you have that tooltype?

Will try 17.0 and let you know...

Lost do you know you MB rev?  Mine are 9-03, with the WD Proto -08 SCSI.  The one I'm hoping to install this on has a Sprectrum, Ariandne, 16megs of 60NS ZIPS (turned ramsey wrap, burst, and page off), Buster 11, DMAC 04, RAMSEY 07, 3.1 ROMS and Workbench 3.9 with BB4.

I'm using a 68000, so the NOVBRMOVE isn't applicable in my case unfortunately.
Regarding the green colour, it's more of a dark green than a pure green.
Being as though the slave was written in 2005, try a version of WHDLoad from precisely that time (you only need to change the WHDLoad command in C to an older version, incase anyone's wondering).
Good luck. :)

Well this is a bust.

Tried:
* Removed graphics and ethernet card to run the 3k stock.
* Booted with the most minimal workbench.
* Tried all the settings in WHDLoad.
* Turn off synchronous transfer, cpu setting, and booted to OCS from rom.

All of the above gave the identical result.

Strange that Lost was able to make it work with similar system and I wasn't.

Weird it didn't quit this time when I tired.. usually does. Oh well, if something is going to mess up it is usually when trying to show something that works. Funny, on a side note dungeon master whdload use to work for me and now it doesn't, even when reinstalled. But I guess that could be a whole new thread :) .

Hey Lost,

Thanks so much for putting the effort in!

The only 3 thinks I can even think of:
1.  This system has 3.9 BB4.
2.  This system has DMAC 4 and Ramsey 7.
3.  This system is a 9/3 Made in USA.  (My other 3k with a 9/3 was made in Hong Kong and has the same issues, but has an 040 - So I doubt it. - really don't want to yank the 040).

That is all that I can come up with.  Do you know your dmac and ramsey?
What tooltypes are you using for WHDLoad?

I will try to see if the WHDload folks have a clue...

Again a BIG Thanks Lost, really appreciate it.

Matt

Ramsey -04
dmac -02
buster -11
kickstart - 3.1
Classic wb advance installed with 3.1
Amd scsi to replace proto 04
zorram 128 meg
indivision ecs - fix broken amber screen !@## ups.
barrel battery removed replaced with cordless 3.7v rechargeable phone battery
on board ram - 2 meg chip - 4 meg fast zip (which ever from factory I am guessing)
36 gig hard drive with 68/80 pin adapter to replace 50 pin 200 meg hard drive with terminator at end of chain internal. External cdrom has own termination.
Other than that it has a parallel to pc cable to win98 machine that is networked to 2 terabyte My Book live for house cloud (Mapped cloud amiga directory for own personal amiga gain). That is the low down on system. As for mother board rev I am 99% positive that it was last revision of production. Still have to open it up and double check. Tool types for whdload is what ever was defaulted.

I found a couple of games not working with my Indivision ECS but come up fine through RGB/S-Video adapter.

Can't remember the titles off the top of my head has been awhile.

Using the Indi sound would work but no picture, flick it over to the RGB out and there's the picture :-)

Thought I'd mention that as you all seem to be using Indi's, although doesn't the 3000 have an onboard flicker fixer?

@ minuous : what are you running? a3k also?
cbw advance with 3.1 on mine. I have 3.9 installed also on another partition and it don't like the dragons lair's and space ace's as well as you can see from videos i have posted.

@matt3k : thanks! I like the xsurf too, just got to get around to tweaking it.. waiting for amigakits upgrade to the amtcp4 to come out.. Christmas shopping and the heaps of snow being dumped on us too is slowing my miggy time down lol
