Can I just have fast ram in my Miggy 1200. I have been looking and it seems I can get accelerator cards with fast ram but not the ram on it's own. I am not fussed about the CPU i just want the extra ram for stuff like whdload.
Sorry if this is a newbie sort of question but i am still learning about the 1200 hardware.

Yeah, they sell RAM cards.
I used to have an MBX1200z. 8M RAM (and it had an FPU, which I never used), no accel..
Frequently tho, they cost almost as much as some accelerators..
No one makes them new, but they show up for sale from time to time.
And maybe some people with them are upgrading to the new CPU cards and will sell theirs.
(I did that when I got my ACA)

why not get one of the new ACA 020 cards?

Hmm if it's going to cost as much as new card I might as well just get a new card.
Which 020 cards do you mean though.
-
RAM-only cards exist, but they max out at 8MB because the 1200's reduced-cost 68EC020 CPU has fewer address lines than a full 68020. And if you use more than 4MB you'll lose access to your PCMCIA slot due to a not-so-great design decision concerning the 1200's memory addressing.
Accelerators with full 020s or better get around both of these problems by mapping the expansion RAM into a different area.

Ah right that makes more sense then. Been a 1200 noob I wasn't aware of this.

I would look at this one.

^ Yup, that's exactly what I'd recommend.
I have a fast RAM only expansion. It's 8Megs, and it works great (over two times faster Amiga), but I got mine dirt cheap. They are usually pretty expensive compared to accelerators. So, for just a little bit more money you get this brand new ACA 020. You'll get a (bit, but still) faster CPU and a truckload of RAM. You can go wild with RAD, Ramdisk installations and stuff :)
-
Incidentally, RAM cards for the 1200 are and were often sold as accelerators, because they speed up the machine so much. So if you see an advert for a "cheap" A1200 accelerator, you may well find it's just a RAM expansion.

As mentioned the ACA 1220 is the best choice if you're on a budget, with 128mb Ram, full 68020 at 16.67MHz and of course a two year warranty.

The other alternative is to buy a used 4/8 MB Ram expansion from eBay, but I think some people obviously haven't heard of the new accelerator cards as these still sell ridiculously over priced!
