I am trying to collect together all the original Video tapes released for the Amiga. Stuff like the tutorial tapes released by Amiga Format and the series of instructional tapes released by Burgess.
I intend to convert them to AVI to preserve them.
I already have a few but if you have any you could share then please either get in touch here or contact me on EAB via this thread...

If anyone has any video's that they could share please get in touch with me via the EAB Thread...
I have a bunch of videos available (and already digitized).
Also, I have been searching a long time for a copy of the ImageFX Catalyzer tutorial videos by Bohus B. (sp?). I'd pay (a reasonable price, please) for these.
-
@ral-clan, I would be really interested in seeing what videos you have!
Any chance that you would consider contributing to our project over on EAB and uploading some for us?
I will look out for the ImageFX videos - I think something like this came up on US Ebay a while back but I overlooked them because I'm not too sure if I can play NTSC tapes on my VCR but if they crop up again I will investigate further...
Look forward to hearing back from you.

I've got a lot of original lightwave tutorials, some DPaint tutorials and the Aladdin4d tutorial tapes. I tried compressing them down to DIVX files, though. Just can't get them small enough for me to upload them (most are over 600MB). My monthly bandwidth is limited.
-
My files are mostly around that size (600-700MB) I seem to be OK here uploading them - I do about one a week and my ISP seems OK with that - so far anyway!
Could you put them all onto some DVD's and send them to me?
I would pay the postage and then I could upload them one by one to the EAB Server.
We would be really grateful as the project is going well and up to ten videos now - some way down the line we want to get a front end page together for this project to display each video - could give you a nice mention!
Drop me a PM and maybe we could sort something out :-)

Thanks Peter
I have one about... I *think*... animation (although it could easily be one of the desktop video or DPaint ones you already have). It'll be up in the loft somewhere (with the video recorder), I'll have a quick look for it next time I'm up there.
-
That would be great - many thanks - if you don't fancy going through the process of converting and uploading I will always do it if you can send me the tape, which I will of course return, thanks again, Peter
-
Hi, PM sent.
-
2 more videos uploaded...
Domark 3D construction Kit and RocKey RG320C Tutorial (very short)
Once again, if anyone has anything they can share please contact me.

Thanks Peter
Great effort.
Any chance these can be uploaded to a video site (preferably Youtube) though rather than everyone having to download almost a gig of data for every video?
Seems downloading the whole files is a bit time consuming and wasteful when we could just host them on Youtube for everyone?
-
Upload to YouTube?
I doubt it (although I have nothing to do with this project). These videos, while now twenty plus years old, are like abandonware - they exist in a grey copyright area. They are probably still technically still under copyright, but in most cases no-one cares (even the creators in some cases) as the information on them is so old. I would suspect that some of the creators would even appreciate the archival effort.
Not sure YouTube would be the place for them.
Anyway, by the time you've watched a full hour long video on YouTube, you've streamed about a gigabyte of data, so downloading a gigabyte beforehand isn't much different (six of one, half dozen of the other). Plus, if you need to rewatch on YouTube, you have to stream it all over, whereas with the download, it's only once and you can watch it over and over again.

I doubt copyright will be an issue unless someone like Future Publishing actively issues a take-down notice, but I seriously cannot see them being remotely bothered about 20 year old VHS tapes from defunct brands of theirs that haven't been on sale for 2 decades.
One of the Amiga Format videos has existed on youtube for 3 years and not been taken down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkNMiItz4yU
You can also choose your quality on youtube so you control how much data you stream, but that's not so much the issue. Downloading them from the EAB server requires
A) You know about the server and have log-ins
B) You're using a computer and can save files (mobile/tablet/smart tv/console/media centre users are out of luck)
C) You can be bothered to wait for the download
Difference between streaming is I click the video and it plays immediately, with downloading it, I have to sit and wait for 40 mins for the file to download first, by then I've forgotten about it/lost interest/given up etc. with downloading you REALLY have to want to watch it and make an effort, streaming will catch many passive-viewers and random searches on Youtube.
Plus it will open the videos out to a wider audience who don't visit these forums but may remember/have an interest in the videos.
Personally, I watch most videos on my iPad or Xbox 360 on my tv, I don't really sit at my PC watching videos, so I would be more inclined to watch these if I could view them on my Youtube app on my iPad or Xbox. I think the majority of users are the same these days.
Just my 2p.
-
I do agree that making these videos available on YouTube would open them up to a much larger audience.
However, I think there's a reason the EAB files area requires users to make an effort to find/access it. It's intentional, I'm sure (just browse it and you'll see what I mean).

Hi Peter
Mine is just called "The Amiga Video", code AM0001. I'm amazed that it isn't one of the ones you have already (IIRC it was either a freebie or a very cheap "pay the postage" offer). It's no hassle to convert to MPEG if it's definitely one you need.

Hi Chris - I don't have the video you mention so if you could do a convert and maybe take a quick scan of the cover, that would be great.
Details of how to upload to the EAB server are written in my first post of my EAB thread but if you have any questions please just fire me a quick PM. AVI format (someone has also recommended "Handbreak" software to convert to MP4 format) or MP4 format is fine - either would do and thanks!
I hear what people are saying about youtube - I'm thinking about all options at present but first and foremost is actually collecting together as many of the videos as possible to preserve them before the VHS tapes get too rare.

I've just been using Handbrake to convert the videos I'm sending you to MP4 and it works the best of all the software I've tried. Good file size with MP4 format and good de-combing / de-interlacing.
I tried SUPER! but it didn't handle certain de-interlacing and 4:3 screen ratio issued well on certain of the video files.
I also tried Sony Vegas, which of course is excellent. But its focus on quality makes its rendering engine the slowest of the bunch and you can't set it up to do batch renders of several videos overnight.

@Chris - just checking, is your video this ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaRkacQ-YMg
If so then I have managed to grab this one already... ;-)

Pretty sure it's not! (for a start, it's definitely newer than 1987)

I have uploaded another Amiga Video to my Youtube Channel.
"Amiga A1200 Introduction Video - Wall Street Video - Bruce Smith Books" (http://youtu.be/7PvWGFRcV00)
This 60 minute (Very basic) instructional Video was included in the Bruce Smith Books Insider Guide Series "Amiga A1200 Beginners Pack"

I have a couple more Videos uploaded to my Youtube Channel.
They are both about Video Mixing using Panasonic Mixers.
Although the Videos are mainly about Video production techniques there is some mention and use of the Amiga and of Dpaint III.
They are pretty interesting videos, if you are into this sort of thing - they are worth a watch even just to witness what a pain staking process video production was back in the early 1990's...
