Title: A600 Strange Audio Stutter on DH0 IO
Post by: brownb2 on November 03, 2012, 12:20:34 PM
I don't know whether this has started happening since I upgraded to the ACA620 but I'm noticing games like Cannon Fodder 1/2 audio stutters / cuts out completely whenever the DH0 access light goes on and resumes when the light goes out.

Now admittedly I've not used the Amiga 600 in a while but I remember it could do parallel IO - anybody any ideas what could cause this problem?

For what it's worth Turrican 2 now crashes out right and Turrican 3 also has the same music problems and crashes intermittently.

I have an ACA620 also. Indianapolis500 refuses to work now (that hurts the most). Cannon Fodder intermittently crashes. So does Datastorm.
What you're describing though sounds like a lack of full PRELOAD. Check that you have the PRELOAD tooltype set on the game icon. Cannon Fodder will fully preload with 2 Megs of Fast Ram (providing you have 2 Megs of Chip Ram) and of course, any game via WHDLoad which requires further disk reads (ie partially successful preload) will blank the display, and cut the audio whilst it's reading or writing to disk (the led filter will toggle as well to let you know).
Being as though you do have the ACA620 though with 11MB Fast Ram, you shouldn't have a problem.
I'm assuming though that you're using the ACATuneTool to utilise the 11MB, because if not then it defaults to 4MB Fast memory if my memory serves me correctly...in which case you may not have enough free Ram to fully preload larger (3+ disk) games if you have a heavy Workbench.

Must admit though, the card/Workbench flies once all speed-up options are set in the ACATuneTool. Just a shame it seems to break compatibility with some of the WHDLoad games. An A600, particularly with an 020 or 030 processor isn't a common WHDLoad platform, so I don't think the slaves are written with an A600 or any ECS amiga in mind. To be honest, my experience is that a good proportion of slaves are written for an AGA/1200 in mind and they don't seem to care about ECS machines at all. Some of the WHDLoad slaves for A500 games even require an 020 and Kickstart3, yet the original game is 1.3/68000. It's a shame really, and a bloody annoying one.

After checking the max transfer settings I can only think that it's a problem with the old CF card I'm using for DH0 so I'm currently reinstalling it to a new internal CF card.
