Title: Using 2 SCSI Adapters in an Amiga 4000 can it be done?
Post by: shaf on December 20, 2002, 01:52:24 AM
I have a Comspec SCSI Controller in my Amiga 4000 and want to transfer the files into the SCSI Hard Drive connected to my A2091 Controller with Guru ROM 6.x.

Since Comspec Formatted Hard Drives do not support RDB I will need to Format the Drive attached to the A2091 and transfer the files. I cannot seem to access trhe A2091 Controller although Showconfig does the the Info for both devices. My otheroption is  to attach a Jaz Drive to the Comspec Controller, Format a Jaz Disk copy alt the Partitions to the Disk and then attach the Jaz Drive to the A2091 and repeart the process.

Any thoughts???

I am running Kickstart 3.1 and Workbench 3.1.

Thanks

Shaf

:-? Attaching two controllers to the same SCSI chain will be problematic.  Most SCSI controllers configure themselves as device number seven, though some use device number zero.  If they want the same number, it shouldn't work.  Even if they use different numbers, one or the other may not play nicely and give up control of the bus when the other wants to use it.

;-) On the other hand, there should be no trouble using two SCSI controllers in the same 'miggy.  Why not just temporarily move one controller to the other Amiga?  (Mind you, you'll have to set it not to autoboot, else you'll be trying to boot from both of them.  Even if it sorts itself out, it could take a while, and then try to boot from the wrong one.)

 Another idea would be for you to get a pair of X-Surf ethernet cards and a cross-over cable and a copy of Envoy or Samba.  Then you could just copy the data across your network!

:-D (That's what I've done here...)

I have used the Jaz method my self, and it works fine. I even bought a couple of extra used drives and added one to the pc just for that purpose (file sharing). Haven't tried networking yet.

You can put 2 scsi controllers in one Amiga. Each will be it's own chain. Each will have to be polled seperately. Each will have a unique tooltype in harddrive toolbox ie scsi.device, warpdrive.device, omniscsi.device ect...

I had no problems to run Oktagon 2008 SCSI and CSPPC SCSI in my A4000. As well Oktagon SCSI and Blizzard 2060 SCSi in my A500T.

Using two (or more SCSI controllers in one Amiga is certaing possible. The only thing you'll have to do is set the right tooltype in HDToolBox to setup the drive(s) attached to the 2091. With a std. ROM the 2091 uses scsi.device but I have the feeling the GuruROM may have changed that. If you've used the 2091 in another machine, I'm sure you won't have problems. Just remember to turn the boot options on any connected drives off.
