Title: So what do people do with their Amigas on Amiga.org?
Post by: Kesa on October 30, 2012, 07:52:14 AM
I have been wondering about this for a while. What do people actually use their Amigas for when then they are not hanging around the org. I am curious to see if there is a common activity that people do. Like a certain type of productivity. Or games. Or maybe people just like modding cases or workbench.

As for me all i do is play the older games and surf the web. I also like tinkering with mos. The only productivity i do is Deluxe paint because i remember using it when i was 5.

What does everyone else do?

Kesa,
Do people actually use real Amiga's to surf the web?
Sounds painful.
Considering how slow that would be, when do you folks find time to eat or defecate?

An Amiga user understands how to multitask, we can surf the web, eat and defecate at the same.

Whoa! Don't wanna get to close to that.
OK, but when do you folks have time for sex?
Please don't tell me its concurrent (man, THAT would get ugly).

I've not powered on my A1200 for a few months.  I have too many interests so rotate hobbies every few months.

However, when my A1200 was last powered up I remember a) browsing the internet, b) connecting to other machines via telnet (running BitchX on a Linux box for IRC) and c) figuring out how to play mp3s with AmigaAMP.   I also remember struggling to get an FPU working;  the machine won't boot with FPU - I thought the first was faulty so bought another only to discover the exact same behaviour :(

I think if/when I buy an Indivision AGA the A1200 will see much more use.   I spend much of my time connected to remote machines via ssh, using IRC, editing web pages and documents - there's really no reason the Amiga couldn't be used as a daily machine.

I play.

That's it, all that I use my Miggy for at the moment - Just simple playing. It's a breath of fresh air after having to wait for "Windoze" to load, update, crash, reload, update again, then hang...... :D

1) Hack the hardware and software as much as possible.
2) Jam in as many broken upgrades as possible.
3) Sell it on Greedbay.
4) Buy someone else's crap at mega-markup prices on Greedbay.
5) Complain about it here on Amiga.org!
6) Done.

Dear Amigans:

I use my amiga 2000 (recently acquired a few months ago) mainly for:

-deluxe paint 3
-moviesetter
-amos pro

So basically: I make pictures, I make animation, and I work on new amiga games using
amos professional.

Love !!!

People these days seem to be under the impression that anything under a gigahertz is incapable of running a basic web browser. It's seriously not that impossible - a moderately upgraded Amiga is on par with the kind of machines that were used for web browsing back in the old days. It ain't zippy, but it's certainly not that unusable. (The truth is just that your modern multi-gigahertz machine isn't as much faster as you think it is, outside of certain specific cases...)

Personally, I don't use my A1200 as much as I should - I'm currently trying to get it set up to do a little more, such as MIDI editing and animation. Ultimately my intention is for it to be a development platform for my game projects, I just haven't gotten around to those yet...

I will admit, mine is mostly for games, though I do try to learn Deluxe Paint again. And I'll agree with CommodoreJohn, you can do a lot more with the miggy online than people tend to assume.

Music in protracker, musicline and ahx.
Coding using asm-pro, phxass and ced.
Playing Doom.
Web and irc ( yes really ).
Playing games and watching demos.
They get used every week at least. :)

No, not incapable, just painful (especially when we're  talking under 100MHz).
That's why I follow Xdelusion's lead and use a MorphOS machine (or better) for browsing.
Games on an Amiga, even text editing or music - no problem.

It's seriously not that bad. Sure, naturally a MorphOS box is going to be better at it, but it really isn't that bad on a 33-50MHz 030.

Kids 3000D: games, and school work.

Isn't it kind of amazing that we have machines in the multiple GHZ range and we still have to wait for crap to happen :)

Likewise, I agree with CommodoreJohn;  It may not be as quick under a 50MHz '030 but I wouldn't call it painful, in fact, I quite enjoy it (nostalgia perhaps, but it feels great).

I am however disappointed that Google+ no longer supports IBrowse ...

Already got that, without the lag of an '80s slooow processor.

Nostalgia for me is  old Judas Priest videos, but they're hokey too.

Hi,

@Kesa,

Lets see where shall I start, What do I do with my Amiga?

Well there is , than there is, but I really like, ahhh no, I would rather use, but only when I am really bored, but I really want to use but will set that up tomorrow. Then there are but only on Sunday when I have enought time off to use it, because it has a steep learning curve. And don't you think that is really exciting, and that is so awesome.

Well that explains what I use my Amiga for and it is really great for everything that I mentioned above.

Hey, that was a good video! I don't understand model trains though. I mean, there is only so many ways to do a circle. Wouldn't it be better to play with trains on a simulator instead? Maybe A-Train?

I use my A1200 to test my game ports (I actually do the coding on the PC).

I also use it for retro gaming (WHDLOAD), playing demos and playing my own game ports (extended beta testing) and I love customizing WB (OS 3.9) to see how good and how fast I can get it.

Finally I like adding new hardware to my 20 year old Amiga (eg HDMI output)

Well, I expand my machines until they are at my liking both added hardware and own mods.
Then I play around with WB and when im happy with it i code in AMOS pro and play around with deluxepaint and I also play games via WHDLoad and listen to music :)

A long time ago, I purchased the Amiga 2000HD for an easy to use system for me, my wife and very young son.  We had some kid's programs, Appetizer collection, the Critics Choice collection, AmigaVision, Final Writer, Quarterback and Quarterback Tools.  Upgraded Final Writer a few times to Final Writer 97.  Later, I used the A2000HD for dial-up internet access at 19.2Kbps using AmiTCP/IP, ppp.device and AWeb-II.  It was slow to render web pages, but I was amazed at what the A2000HD could do with no accelerator card (68000 CPU only).

My son is now an adult and has zero interest in Amiga stuff.

I use my PPC system for web browsing, email (via webmail), Final Writer 97, some paint programs and tinkering with ARexx.

A2000HD is now retired, but still works.  Needs a new floppy drive.

I agree. They have use in depicting scenes of past times. I enjoy railroad archaeology myself and watching real trains go about their business.

The important thing about the video is the short introduction, which I did on my A3000 with DeluxePaint4.
