Title: Amiga Browsers: What do you use and why?
Post by: danbeaver on October 14, 2012, 01:03:52 AM
On my A4000 I have a dual boot setup, OS 4.1 and something that's not (3.9, but I have CF cards for 3.1 & 3.5).  Under OS 4.1, RAM is limited and IBrowse (2.4) runs fast and uses the least memory (as do most all 68K programs).  Aweb is my next choice, and NetSurf my third.  Aweb and NetSurf are more modern but use more memory, with NetSurf a bit sluggish on the screen re-draws.  OWB is OK, but I guess it would be fourth down.

Under 3.9, I like Voyager (enough that I tracked down the NetConnect3 CD and bought it from someone on AmiBay).  IBrowse would be a tie with AWeb.  NetSurf 68K keeps giving me problems.

I'm using 3.1.
I use primarily iBrowse 2.x.
I havev used AWeb, which I like a bit better as a program, but it doesn't render as well as iBrowse..
IMHO

Ibrowse. It does the job decently when the urge to browse on the amiga strikes me, or for downloading stuff from aminet.

My Browsers Ibrowse 2.4 (Registred) as main browser, and AWeb. And use thats browsers, becouse are the only ones that work with my Classic Amiga hardware.

I would use Netsurf or another browser but darkly Netsurf not work with native video Amiga modes.

I bought Ibrowse years ago and it works great for aminet and whdload.  Even duckduckgo is decent enough.

I own voyager but I prefer ibrowse.  I can't remember a particular reason though...

I use mainly 2 amiga, a desktop AGA 1200 and a RTG 2000.
Both have IBrowse 2.4 as main browsers because it is fast and amiga friendly, even if modern web unfriendly. The 2000 uses also Netsurf because it is accurate, but it is a bit slow with my 68060 (needs RTG).

IBrowse 2.4 on all machines.  It's reasonably fast and easy.  The fact that a good majority of pages don't render properly doesn't bother me.  As it's unregistered, the 30-minute use limit is a minor annoyance, and the two "browser" (tab) limit is a little more so.  As above, it does a good job of downloading from Aminet and various other places.

Ibrowse, because I've found all other Amiga browsers to be unstable. Ibrowse is rock solid...I don't recall it ever crashing. I use it for Aminet and other Amiga sites.

I apologise for probably repeating myself from other threads, but I want to make this clear now, at the start of this thread, to avoid fire-fighting later.

There are three different versions of NetSurf for AmigaOS (there is also an old MorphOS version):

The 68k version is the "framebuffer" frontend, which is designed for no-GUI and debugging purposes only.  It is not particulary representative of other versions, and the use of framebuffer/SDL output means the hardware requirements are higher than they could be (eg. it needs RTG, whereas the OS4 version works on 8-bit modes)

There are two OS4 versions.  One is mine, which has a native GUI.  The other is the gtk version running under AmiCygnix (this is not a seperate download, it comes with AmiCygnix only).  The common OS4 version does not need AmiCygnix (I'm pointing this out because some people apparently thought it did).

Hopefully that clears up any confusion.

On OS4 I use NetSurf primarily, and MUI-OWB as a backup.

I have the following web browsers installed on my MicroA1 system:
AWeb APL Lite 3.5.10
AmigaOS4 OEM version of IBrowse 2.4
NetSurf 2.8 graphics.library static build
Origyn Web Browser 3.31
MUI-OWB (Origyn Web Browser 1.9)
Timberwolf RC3

In the early days of OS4, I used AWeb and IBrowse.  As the others became available, I tried each public version as they were released.  Now I use mostly OWB 3.31 and NetSurf for my daily web browsing.

Each browser is unique.  Timberwolf uses too much RAM on my system, so I rarely use Timberwolf.  However, I do use all the others.

Any reason you're still on 2.8?

Thanx for that..
I kind of gathered something like that from the other threads, but it makes it more clear...

I have used NetSurf 2.9 and like it alot, but I am still confused about SObjs files.  I keep wondering if one of the required SObjs files will be updated by another program or replaced by a software update to another program.  For example, do NetSurf and MUI-OWB use the same files?

For some reason, I thought that the static version of NetSurf 2.8 used less memory than NetSurf 2.9 uses.  After using NetSurf 2.9 more today, it appears that I was wrong.

I don't think MUI-OWB uses SObjs at all.  If any are updated NetSurf will continue to work fine provided there's no API breakage (which shouldn't happen if they are version-named correctly).

If you're worried about it you could always use a dev build, but they are liable to be unstable ("test builds" link on the usual download page)

To answer the original question, even if i'm a bit biased: Odyssey Web Browser (formerly known as OWB for MorphOS). :)
Because it's based on a recent WebKit and supports very well HTML5 standards (including HTML audio/video).

On a classic amiga, it would be of course very memory hungry, but not that slow, at least when disabling javascript. I think UAE users might find it interesting, if anyone was motivated enough to port it to OS3.x. Anyway, it's already ported to AROS/Zune (with serious limitations), so it might happen someday that it comes to 68k arch.

For those who don't know Odyssey because they don't own MorphOS or OS4 hardware (even if the version available on OS4 is quite old and incomplete), here are a couple old screenshots: http://fabportnawak.free.fr/owbshots/

End of advertisement. ;)

Get URL whenever I need to DL a specific file through UAE. I use the PC for the rest.

@chris

I tried several of the dev builds and every one croaked with a DSI error.

I'll use NetSurf 2.9 :)

Update For some reason, the dev builds don't like URW Palladio fonts.
Launched ok after I got rid of the URW Palladio fonts ...
but launched fine after all fonts restored to normal.
Perhaps it finished scanning the fonts files after I got rid of the URW Palladio fonts ...
but I am not sure if it even scans the fonts files now after everything is back to normal.
