There are a lot of Amiga games out there, many easily downloaded. A few we all know about, Turrican, Battle Squadron, Three Stooges, Rocket Ranger...
But there are a lot more that only some of us know about. I want some of those games, but I don't know what they are (the good from the bad.)
Any game reviews and/or recommendations out there? I want to build my library!

Shoot, anything that comes to mind! I want to broaden my horizons! :laugh1:

I'm playing Gods at the moment, I presume you know about that.
Make a list in the first post of people's suggestions so we can see what to play in one post?

Will do!
Gods is a new one on me!
-
Just went and had a look at a few screenshots of Gods. I actually have that game.
Came in a collection of 'non-working' floppies that I got with my new A500 a few weeks ago! I recognize it from the cover art of the HUGE plastic case I guess those floppies used to come in.
I would like to be able to play this game, but I'm going to have to download it to do it.
-
If you have the original floppy and it doesn't work, have you tried cleaning it?
-
If you have the original floppy and it doesn't work, have you tried cleaning it?
Actually I haven't. I have a lot of floppies that look interesting, but don't work. I'd love to be able to recover some of them and play them.
How do I clean them?
-
This is how I do it:
You need an alcohol-based cleaner and some cotton buds. I use AM record cleaner as it's designed to clean with no residue.
This is all at your own risk! It takes time so be patient.
Get the victim - er, patient - and position the disk such that the offset hole on the spindle is at the top- so you know where to stop :)
Spray the cleaner onto one end of the cotton bud. Now hold the disk open by pulling the metal guard.
Wipe the wet end of the bud on the disk surface such that the visible surface changes colour. Don't be afraid to touch the surface, but don't be too heavy. Just enough pressure to rub off dirt and oxide.
When it's covered, use the dry end to dry it again. It'll still be wet, but you need to get the excess off otherwise it gets into the fibre inside the disk.
Turn the disk to expose the next dry segment of the disk, and repeat. If the disk doesn't get wet, you need a bit more cleaner on the bud.
Keep turning the disk - don't let it stay in one place too long until it's dry.
When the offset spindle hole is back to the top again, you know you've done the disk.
At this point keep the cover open and keep turning the disk until it's at least mostly dry. When it's dry it'll go back to it's original colour.
Then try it :)
Remember this is just what I do, your mileage may vary!
I was thinking of making an instructional video, would that help?

Yes, it would! :laugh1:
I can't wait to try this out - maybe I can save some of my floppies. Sounds like I'd better set aside a Saturday or two!
-
One thing I should point out - it's never a good idea to touch the magnetic surface with anything, normally - but then if it's a dead disk then you don't have any choice. However, it's worth getting a backup of the recovered disk just in case!
Also, when you rub the surface, do it from the inside to the outside rather than swirling around or anything.
This trick works on 3" and 5.25" disks too, by the way - they're the same stuff. I once resurrected about 15 Amstrad disks this way that were completely dead after being stored in someone's loft for a few decades, and they'd been moist and had all oxidised.
I'll try and do a video for you. :)
-
That's impressive! I actually have a few DOS and early Windows floppies I'd like to restore...
OBTW I had an Amstrad, too! ("Portable", big and gray, TWO floppies, 2400 baud modem, tiny green screen!) I foolishly gave it a way! :(

Myth: History In The Making comes to mind, as does Robocop 3D. Two of the first games I had when I upgraded to the 1200. Oh, and I can't leave out Ultima VI: The False Prophet!
Hmm, what else?
Citdadel if you like Wolfenstein 3D. Killing Game Show. Great Giana Sisters. Bounce (Aminet). Alien Fish Finger (latest release).
-
I added them all to the list in the first post.
-
Hey, don't forget Ultima IV and Ultima V!

Done!
-
Ironically the other game I'm playing at the moment is Ultima VII - but that's the PC version using my bridgeboard, so it doesn't count. Boo. :)
-
Magic Pockets can be frustrating (and NO save-option!) but it always makes me come back for another try.
-
From top of my head:
James Pond 1
Jamed Pond 2 (Robocod)
Fire & Ice
Leander
Prohpecy I: The Viking Child
The last one is a Wonderboy clone, if you will. If only the "physics" of the characters consisted of better than pure linear movements. Despite that, I played it untill finished. The atmosphere generated by the music and cute graphics hooked me in other words.
-
Not to go too far off-topic - but I made a video here:

on how to clean floppies.
-
Thanks!

Uh..... Syndicate? ;)

Uh..... Syndicate? ;)
Looks very interesting! I added it to the list, which is growing!
-
Hang on - where are Laser Squad and Lords of Chaos? And "UFO: Enemy Unknown" for that matter?
-
Duly noted - and added to the list!

You should probably check out the Lemon Amiga top 100 games, that has the main games you should own listed.
Some games I've enjoyed which you might not have played include:

A PD game that's absolutely worth playing, doubly so in two player: Transplant. Just make sure you have autofire :)
I've done a couple reviews of games on my blog

Lastly, XCOM is the best game ever written. Seriously.
