Title: Noob Help
Post by: marculos on September 16, 2012, 10:13:36 PM
Hi,

I am trying to get the classic workbench setup on my amiga 600.

http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/gaae.htm

What I am trying to achieve is to get the gaee classic workbench installed on a ide disk. Appreciate some guidance as not familiar with Amiga OS. There is a System.hdf which I would like to copy to the hard disk, how do I achieve this, the tutorials I have seen so far seem a bit vague..

I have connected the 2.5" ide disk I plan to use in the 600 via a usb cable and connected to WinUAE on my pc. Next I loaded the 2.1 workbench adf and attempted to use HDToolBox. I get the error "driver not installed".

I think I need to change SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=scsi.device to SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=uaehf.device.. If I select icon / information for HDToolBox I do not see any paramaters.

Any help would be appreciated, as you can see  I don't really know what I am doing ! thx

Im not 100% certain on this but i think it needs to be done through WINUAE first?

I have finally managed to format and partition the disk in WinUae .Next issue.... I want to copy the classic workbench gaae to my drive and I have mounted the system.hdf as another drive.

The problem is that it always boots to the system.hdf even when its marked as not bootable. Then when I try and copy  the partition copy DH1: SYSTEM: ALL CLONE   ... it says the files are in use. Any ideas ?

Be sure to mount the device you want to boot first, then the system.hdf.
When copying system drive to another drive use Dopus and you won't get any trouble :)

Boot from the device you want to copy (in your case System.hdf), then use a PC directory as second device, copy the system drive in Dopus to the pc directory, be sure to remove all devices and then mount again and mount PC directory last, use dopus and copy to your harddrive from PC directory and all should work :)

Edit: Here is a link for all ClassicWB guides in two PDF files.

Edit: Also to avoid issues whith boot be sure to set all devices controllers to UAE when doing the copy stuff, If you use IDE0 thet device will boot first in most cases, so if you still have problem with wrong device booting use IDE0 on the one you want to boot and UAE on the rest.

Thanks for the help I got there in the end .. I think ! I booted from the System.hdf went through the wizard and was then able to copy over the partition to my USB disk...now I just need more memory !

You are welcome :D Great that you solved it :)
Are you planning on getting an accelerator card or just a memory expansion?

Just planning on memory upgrade for now.. I guess if I want serious amiga performance i'd be better off with a 1200. I just like the small form factor of the 600. I'm not sure on long term plans for the 600 ...apart from games :) maybe use it as a web server or something .. need to have a proper play !

I have gone nuts with my 600. Accelerator, memory upgrade, ecs scan doubler, CF HDD, dual kickstart switcher with 1200 rom and 500 rom also including the HxC floppy emulator. The little 600 can pack a punch when upgraded.

Hi more help needed. I am trying to check what the maxtransfer rate is set for my IDE drive.. The "change" button is missing in HDTOOLBOX,is this because of the version of HDTOOLBOX or am I not understanding something ? Thanks !

Make sure the "advanced options" checkbox/button is enabled. Otherwise the filesystem adjustment settings are hidden. Do you know which version of HDToolbox you're using?

Hi , I am using version 2.22. If I click Advanced Options I just see

Start Cyl 2
End Cyl 4030
Total Cyl 4029

Buffers 30
Bootable - yes
Boot priority 0

Then I see options for Change File System for Partition and Add/Update File Systems

The MaxTransfer setting is inside the "Change File System for Partition".
