I'd love to be able to play all my old games with a joystick, but having some trouble finding one that is close to the old Star Cursor. in look and feel, the flight sim type are crap for games that require pounding on the fire button.
Is there an interface that you can (still) get for the PC, to plug in an original Amiga joystick?
would love a Catweasel MK4 but they are no longer made.

Ah, yes, Jens do you hear this?
Actually, there are a lot of people who would like one of those.
Me included.

There are DB9-USB adapters out there but I have never used one, a few guys make them though.
The closest new PC joystick I have found to the old arcade-like Star Cursor or Competition Pro are these cheap things: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PC-LAPTOP-USB-JOYSTICK-JOYPAD-GAMEPAD-CONTROLLER-HOT-2012-/160868230814?pt=AU_Video_Game_Accessories&hash=item25747e669e
Not sure what a Koala would think of them though! :p

I also found these nicer sticks, they cost a bit more but look like they have higher quality parts:

also search on ebay for "retrolink"
also look on dealextreme.

I purchased the original Qanba from DX for $50. the Qanba 2 is $164, otherwise i'd recommend it for fighting games, but not at that price.

So this will work with WinUAE? if so it would be ideal.

Thanks, I think I'll get an adapter and put the Star-Cursor back in action. Those boxes are huge and I really like the thumb Fire.

I have a replica NES controller that works with WinUAE, I don't see why this would not work... don't have one though...

I have a replica competition pro that is USB. I have had ti a while and love it as it is solid and reliable.

There was a similar thread on AW (http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=35767&forum=33#666025), so I opted for that adapter (a DIY project, sold as a kit ) : it even allows you to plug a second 9pin joystick.
Go on and use your favorite AMiGA joystick.

I have two of them and they are pretty decent. That being said: The USB-Interface of the Competition introduces some small lag (not noticable per se, but if you add the lag of the emulator it can give you a little strange feeling). Catweasel is definitely faster, but doesn't work with any 64 Bit OS - nobody ported the drivers.
Furthermore Competition Pro 5000 from the 80s are just a little bit better in terms of stability and reliability.
-
I must admit, I just used an adapter for a playstation controller. Seemed simpler and certainly cheaper :)
-
if you have the original 4-players parallele adapter, you could plug it to your PC (if it still has a parallele port), plug your Amiga joystick and use ppjoy driver that you can get at http://ppjoy.bossstation.dnsalias.org/
-
I bought a cheap USB gamepad, opened it up and soldered a DB9 socket to it. Now I can use any old joystick (like my WICO bat) with my PC and emulators.
That thing on Ebay seems to do the same thing.

No need to use a keyboard . Two analog ports
-
The Competition Pro USB is as "Old School" and durable as they come; Amigakit sells them for 23 USD

Oh, I guess one of those is out then win 7 64bit here.

I have ordered the USB addaptor off Ebay, Ill post back here when I get it.
-
It arrived and works just fine. I did have to get the latest version of WinUAE though... Well Hybris marathon tonight! :)
-
How easy is it to map other functions or keys to extra joystick buttons in WinUAE?
I prefer to use my XBOX 360 arcade stick for just about everything these days.
-
Not sure, it auto configered. did not have to change a thing.

Does this mean that this joystick adapter will only work with emulators that specifically support it?
As I said, I hacked a DB9 port onto a standard USB controller and it will work with any PC game or emulator that supports a regular USB gamepad.
The adapter you bought is smaller, but if it only is supported by certain emulators (or certain versions of emulators) then not sure it's an advantage...
-
I'm sure it's HID compliant. Everything is these days.
-
I bought the atari arcade USB adapter and it is working absolutely out of the box with my good old konix speedking and some games ready to run provided by thecompany.pl
the sad thing is that it is not working on my AmigaOne (GrimReaper)...
