Oke here is the deal.
I have a 40 gb harddisk.
Samsung SV4012H
Cylinders 1024
head 255
Sectors 63
chs Cap 40060
lba 8104.
Here is my problem.
How do I get this info:
Blocks per track ?
Blocks per cylinder ?
Park head where ?
Is it even possible to install this hdd on my amiga 1200
-
You don't have to find that data. Simply use "Get drive geometry"
button in HDToolBox configuration and everything is done for you.
Make sure your boot partition is completely in the first 4GB of your
HD.

A quick search got me this:
hda: SAMSUNG SV4012H, ATA DISK drive
hda: 78242976 sectors (40060 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=4870/255/63,
UDMA(33)
Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 4870 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes
It's from a Russian site (http://lists.debian.org/debian-russian/2002/debian-russian-200210/msg00273.html), but it might be what you need :-)

The Get drive geometry only works if I select scsi drive.
It is a IDE drive but it only works in scsi modus.
I formated it and it looks oke :D
You guy's are the greatest.
Any idea why I can only partition the first 8 gb ?
When i do Get drive geometry It detects a
Samsung
SV4012H
RM10
cylinder 16383
heads 16
blocks per track 63
blocks per cylinder 1008
park head where 16383
When I type these details in XT drive I get
Wrong type for drive, use xt types

Old scsi.device? 3.9 BB2 works best with big drives, if you have not some other sw/hw which patches the old 8 GB restriction.
-
Well thats the fun part of it, It aint a scsi device.
Its a normal Ide 3.5 hdd
(im very new in the amiga world so please no technical stuff)
-
Yep...but in their infinite wisdom C= named the device handling the IDE interface scsi.device :-D.
(Well on an A1200 anyway, not sure what about other Amiga's).
-
Ahaaa, and it looks to be restricted to 8 gig Right ?.
And there is nothing I can do about this ? :-P
Without buying stuff
-
Which OS are you using?
-
3.1 and thats because my amiga is as basic as it gets
-
To see the other 32GB of the drive, you have the following options:
1. Purchase OS3.5 or, preferably, OS3.9. You will need a CDROM drive to install either of these though.
2. Purchase a 4xEIDE'99 adapter and software from ELBox, which installs a driver/patch to enable full use of the drive. The adapter is easy to install, and cheap.
3. Get a copy of IDEFix97. Demo available on Aminet...but registration no longer available. Again, this installs a driver/patch to enable full use of your drive.
Good Luck.
Rob.
